✘ What drives me?
✘ What do I ultimately want to achieve?
✘ Why do I want to achieve that?
✘ What would my best friend and/or
partner say my goals are?
8
9. Importance of goals:
9
Convert ideas into doable milestones
Goals
Being positive
Have control on the direction of your
life
Concentrate and use your time more
effectively
13. Specific Goal Setting
13
Describes what you want to accomplish with
as much detail as possible
Vague goals lessen the possibility of attaining
them
E.g.s
I want to do well in English
I want an “A” on my next composition.
14. Measurable Goal Setting
14
Describes goals in terms that can be clearly
evaluated
No measurement means that task or goal will never
be attained
E.g.s
I want to study my biology text.
I want to study chapter 7 and answer all the
questions.
Short-term: “Tomorrow, I will write chapter X.”
Long-term : “At the end of this year, I have written
two books.”
15. Achievable Goal Setting
15
Identifies a goal that focuses on actions rather than
personal qualities
Goal must have an action in order to complete it
E.g.s
I want a better attitude about studying.
I want to complete all assignments before classes.
Approach : “I will finish writing chapter 4.”
Avoidance : “I will try to avoid not finishing chapter 4.”
16. Realistic Goal Setting
16
Identifies goals that are actually able to be attained
Goals can be challenging but not unrealistic
E.g.s
Tonight I’ll read half of my book and complete the
assignments.
Tonight I’ll read two chapters of my book and
complete the assignments.
Learning : “I will complete this course so that I can
improve my writing skills.”
Performance : “I will complete this course so that
others will praise me.”
17. Time Bound Goal Setting
17
Identifies goals that break a longer term goal into
shorter term goals and clearly specifies a
completion date
e.g.s
I want to graduate with honors.
I want to make the dean’s list this semester.
Process: “I will write three pages every day.”
End-state : “I will finish writing this book.”
18. SMART GOAL EXAMPLE
18
Weak Goal Example: I’m going to get fit.
SMART Goal Example:
Specific: I’m going to start running daily and train for a
marathon.
Measurable: I will follow the Nike app training program to run
a full marathon without stopping.
Achievable: I have done some running before, my body is
reasonably healthy, and the marathon is 6 months from now.
Relevant: I want to become a fit, healthy, and strong person
— I want to be full of vitality, energy, and zest for life!
Time-bound: I have signed up for a marathon 6 months from
now.

24. Challenge
24
People are often motivated by achievement

accomplishment
! Too easy vs. Too difficult goal!
Challenging but realistic!
25. Task Complexity
25
Highly complex goals or assignments don’t
have to become overwhelming
Person should have
sufficient time to meet the
goal or improve performance
Person should have enough
time to practice or learn what
is expected and required for
success.
27. How should I achieve them?
27

29. 29
The only thing that stands between a man and
what he wants from life is often merely the will
to try it and the faith to believe that it is
possible. Whatever you believe, with conviction
,becomes your reality
