The Question: Did Mr. Obama take the oath of office using the Koran?
The rumor was that Mr. Obama took the oath of office using the Koran. The rumor was started by an
email. Despite the President's denials, the emails continued circulating across the internet and spoke of
"Obama would take the oath of office using a Koran rather than a bible; as had Rep. Keith Ellison
(Democrat - Minnesota), the only other Muslim in Congress earlier this year." This is in according to the
"Washington Post (Links to an external site.)", Thursday, November 29, 2007 in response to the rumors.
The rumor started just before he had left the United Church of Christ in Chicago church where the
preacher had submitted very racist comments. "Consortium News (Links to an external site.)" quite
blatantly accused the "Washington Post," That Nov. 29 article is constructed almost as a justification for
spreading these rumors. They further went to say that the Post treated the slurs very seriously, and did not
offer much in response against these rumors, relying on Obama's backers and contributors to debunk it.
There is not much evidence that could support this statement, for it was mainly anonymous emails.
And also in accordance with PolitiFact (Links to an external site.), The e-mail also spells the book's name
"Kuran," though usually it is spelled Koran or Quran, further embedding the idea that it was a false
accusation - December 20, 2007. The Hillary Clinton campaign did indeed find the culprits and they were
fired for their rumors. Many popular news offices sent reporters to Indonesia to research this rumor and
when he took the oath of office for the Senate in January 2005, he used his own personal Bible, according
to the Obama campaign and press reports. Vice President Dick Cheney, President of the Senate at the time
of 2005, administered the oath in Obama's swearing-in ceremony and Obama did indeed place his hand
on his own copy of the Bible during this ceremony.
On January 20, 2009, it was finally proven that Mr. Obama swore on the same bible used by Abraham
Lincoln in 1861, and there is a video proving this statement, by the "Congressional Inaugural Committee
(Links to an external site.)." So in conclusion, I debunk this statement as false.
