ROLAND
BARTHES'S
SEMIOTIC
THEORY
By Angel
THE DIFFERENT ELEMENTS OF HIS
SEMIOTIC THEORY
Hermeneutic/enigma codes
Proairetic /action codes
Symbolic codes
Semantic codes
Cultural/ referential codes
THEIR DIFFERENCES
Symbolic codes- an image
which is used to represent
something else eg. kiss of the
vampire: bats are a symbol for
vampires
Semantic codes- parts of a
media product that we
understand have a hidden
meaning eg. Black and red used
in horror movies, we the
audience jane previous
connotations that link to blood
and danger
Proairetic /action codes-
elements of media products that
signify that something is going to
happen eg. A clip of someone
pulling out a gun (could mean he
might shoot someone)
THEIR DIFFERENCES
Hermeneutic/enigma codes-
any mysterious part of a media
text that will engage the
audience eg.Tide ad that says,
“We’ve got what women want!”
(makes the audience think well
what is it, what have they got?)
Cultural/referencial codes-
parts of media where you
have to be part of the culture to
understand the reference eg.
Beyonce's formation video
