In the Beginning….

• Seeding may have
got off to a bit of a
late start, but warm,
dry conditions
allowed for quick
progress, with the
large majority of the
crop planted ahead
of 10 year averages
• Barley acres were up
year over year

• By the end of June,
the word “drought”
was getting tossed
around. We saw a
lot of localized
storms, and in places
heavy rain fall – but it
was not well
dispersed.
• Although seeding
started later, the hot
& dry conditions
pushed the crop
along quickly

• As August came
around, the
southern end of the
prairies had really
struggled as a
result of the dry
conditions, but
crop quality was
still near average
in most of the
central and
northern regions.
• Disease pressure
was minimal, given
the generally dry
conditions

And in the “End” ….
• Harvest got off to a
pretty solid start by late
August. Two weeks
into September, over
60% of the barley crop
was off.
• Yields were better than
expected, given limited
precipitation across
most of the barley
growing region
• Quality was looking
positive….

• And then it snowed, rained
and temperatures remained
below average. Harvest
came to a screeching halt,
and has yet to fully resume
• Barley standing in the fields
is susceptible to chit (pre-
sprouting), mold, mildew
and other diseases.
Germanitive energy will
struggle. Yields will be
impacted.
• We will “pick through” the
late harvest barley, but
expectations for malting
quality are low

Germination – min 95% 4ml/3 day
• Low germ barley can be a result of chitting/pre
sprout, disease, damaged kernels
• Low germ barley will modify less effectively in the
malting process – starch will not convert to sugar
• The malt will have poor extract, friability and wort
clarity
What does this mean?

Protein – 10-12% ideal, export market higher
• Barley protein is influenced by seeding date, yields, fertilizer, soil quality,
available moisture, and heat units during the growing season
• Higher protein takes water on slower. There is a lower starch content and
decreased extract
• High protein can effect flavor and can cause cloudiness in beer
Moisture – 10-13.5%
 High moisture can be a result of high humidity/precipitation during the
harvest season or harvesting prematurely.
 Damp grain is more dense and has a negative impact on production
capacity and plant economics. Barley storage risk is greatly increased
