HURRY UP & WAIT
PILOT EPISODE (PART 1)
SYNOPSIS
It's a lazy Sunday morning. Three roommates, Logan, Zik, and Dru, are slowly getting
ready for a brunch shift at The Shack, a beach-themed full-service restaurant in
Hollywood, CA. They live together in a modest three bedroom two bath apartment in a
quiet neighborhood outside of the main city. It's patio weather.
LOGAN is a young, slender, bisexual, Wiccan, anarchist, Asian female with an
eccentric personality. She's a modern-day hippie. She's from Colorado and is an
aspiring Hollywood actor and comedian. So far, she's only landed a few
supporting roles in daytime sitcoms and Asian energy drink commercials.
ZIK is a tall, dark skinned, fabulously gay, agnostic, liberal, black male
with a mysterious past. He's always bright, cheerful, and outspoken. He's from
Chicago and is an aspiring civil rights lawyer with a background in the arts.
His claim to fame is being a dancer for Beyoncé’s Summer Tour Extravaganza.
DRU is the antithesis of Logan and Zik. An average looking, brown haired,
straight, Christian, conservative, white male with a military background. He's
both ignorant and intolerant but changes over time. He's from Austin and moved
to Hollywood to form his band Lenny and the Space Heaters. They've gained some
local notoriety and are opening for artists like Ballyhoo!
SCENE 1
FADE IN.
INT. - THE APARTMENT - DAY
"Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" by LCD Soundsystem is blaring. We see shots of the
apartment as the camera makes it through the hallway to Logan, who is in the kitchen
making coffee. She opens a cabinet, takes out a bag of coffee, and a filter.
CLOSE UP ON LOGAN.
She puts the filter in the machine, scoops a scoop out of the bag, and misses the
filter. This results in a good portion of the grinds ending up on the counter. She
looks down for a second, then wipes the mess onto the floor and sweeps it under the
stove with her foot. She tries again; this time, successful. She presses the brew
button and the aroma of fresh coffee rises through the air.
CAMERA WIDE ANGLE ON LOGAN.
Logan begins cooking pancakes for herself. She takes a box of pancake mix from the
pantry; a bowl from under the sink; eggs from inside the fridge. She pours water,
cracks the eggs, and pulls out a yellow, smiley face spatula from a drawer. She mixes
the batter carelessly, flinging some of the contents. She hums and sings along as she
works: "you gotta set them up kid, set them up!"
OVER SHOULDER.
We see an oversized pancake being poured, browning, and being flipped. She places her
oversized pancake on a plate and arranges a sliced banana into a smiley face. She
haphazardly throws a handful of chocolate chips at her creation, resulting in a
masterpiece. Amused, she smiles as she reaches to place her dish on the other side of
the island. A counter and three bar stools face her.
CAMERA WIDE ANGLE ON LOGAN.

She glides backwards, spins, and opens the cupboard in tremendous fashion. She takes
out three mugs, slides sideways over to the coffee machine, and pours three cups
although she's the only one on screen.
CLOSE UP ON COFFEE MUGS.
Each mug has a drastically different personality. Logan's has a pentagram and a goat
with devil horns. Zik's has a rainbow design with unicorns. Dru's is a green
camouflage mug that reads "ARMY." Logan slides mugs forward into camera.
CAMERA WIDE ANGLE ON KITCHEN.
Music fades out. Enters Zik.
LOGAN
Good morning queen.
ZIK
Good morning lover.
Logan and Zik kiss on both cheeks as they sit down at the kitchen counter.
Dru comes out of the bathroom down the hall and approaches the two from a distance. As
he does, Logan attempts to hand him a piping hot cup of coffee.
DRU
In a sec, I just brushed my teeth. Yaknow I was reading that coffee beans have
lectins in them and lectins...
Dru is interrupted by Logan smoking a bong. He pauses mid-sentence and looks at Logan.
DRU
Is that the new stuff?
LOGAN
Fuck Yeah.
Logan passes the bong to Dru. Dru obliges.
ZIK
Mmmhmm look at you partaking in the devil's lettuce.
LOGAN
We corrupted him.
DRU
For your information, guys, I was already corrupted.
Dru takes a huge hit and blindly passes the bong to Zik as he coughs uncontrollably.
LOGAN
Daaaamn, cough city!
ZIK
Good Lord child you are going to kill yourself.
Dru passes bong to Logan as she takes a rip off camera. Dru remains the focus.
DRU
Alright, I'm high, I'm gonna go get ready.
LOGAN

Yeah, hurry up the fuck up!
ZIK
Gotta seize the day!
CUT TO DRU'S BEDROOM.
We see a few guitars, acoustic and electric, a large Marshall amplifier, Blink-182 and
Transformers posters, a crossbow, and 00's memorabilia scattered throughout. Throwing
stars, boxes of .223 ammo, and Playboy magazines are strewn across the floor. Empty
Shiner Bock and Jack Daniel's bottles sit on the windowsill along with a folded
American flag in a wooden and glass case, obviously belonging to a WW1 or 2 era
deceased relative. Other than the mess, Dru's living space is modest. There's no
bedframe, no dresser; only a mattress on the floor.
We hear Zik preparing a smoothie in the kitchen as Dru mumbles to himself.
DRU
Jeans, shirt...
Dru smells shirt, throws it over his shoulder.
DRU
Other shirt, socks, no, black socks, can’t forget the belt, where’s my apron?
Dru walks back into the kitchen.
CAMERA FOLLOWS DRU.
DRU
Guys, where's my apron?
Logan and Zik respond in unison, throwing hands down to sides.
LOGAN
Beats me.
ZIK
No idea.
Dru continues looking for apron in the living room, in the background, while Logan and
Zik talk about the upcoming shift. Zik begins ironing his apron while Logan eats her
smiley face pancakes; extra syrup. "Mystery Science Theater 3000" is on the TV.
CUT TO LOGAN AND ZIK.
ZIK
I hope it's busy I need to make money.
LOGAN
I hope it's slow I'm not really feeling it today.
CUT TO CLOSEUP BEHIND DRU.
Dru lifts up a random female who is laying on the couch asleep. He finds his apron
underneath. Dru brushes his wrinkled apron off as he turns to speak to Logan.
CAMERA PANS WITH DRU.
DRU
Is your friend just gonna lay here the entire day again?
LOGAN

I dunno, ask her.
Dru looks down at the lifeless female and shakes his head in disapproval.
DRU
Are you guys ready to go?
LOGAN
Yessir!
ZIK
Hold on mister! I am not finished ironing my apron.
DRU
Who irons their apron anyways?
Logan mocks Dru.
LOGAN
For your information aprons have lectins in them and lectins can...
Dru cuts off Logan as he pulls out a pack of Marlboro Reds; cowboy killers.
DRU
Do you want a cigarette or not?
LOGAN
Yes please!
Logan and Dru pick up their belongings; Logan first, Dru second. The two step out
front for a smoke as Zik finishes ironing his apron. Dru talks to himself as he passes
through the threshold.
DRU
Hurry up and wait, story of my life.
Dru closes door behind him.
CAMERA STAYS ON ZIK.
Zik puts his server book, pens, wine key, and a lighter in his apron. He folds his
apron delicately and tucks it under his arm as he walks out the door.
CAMERA FOLLOWS ZIK TO THE DOOR.
Door closes behind Zik and we see it being locked from the outside.
CUT TO NEXT.
SCENE 2
ANGLE ON ZIK EXITING. LOGAN AND DRU ON CAMERA.
EXT. - THE APARTMENT - DAY
Logan and Dru take a few last puffs of their cigarettes before putting them out. The
two are finishing a heated discussion over George Orwell's "1984" and a Ronald Regan
bird conspiracy theory. It's clear neither one of them trust the government.
ZIK
That is such a nasty habit.

DRU
Says the gay man.
Zik scoffs at Dru as he turns dramatically and walks away towards the car. Logan
follows Zik, confiding him, as Dru lags behind unempathetically.
LOGAN
Zik, he didn't mean it.
DRU
You'd think if you could take a dick you could take a joke.
Logan and Zik are standing at car when Dru arrives. Both with arms crossed.
LOGAN
Apologize.
DRU
No. I didn't do anything.
LOGAN
You called him gay.
DRU
He is.
ZIK
I know I am but what are you?
DRU.
Gay! Wait.
ZIK
Ha!
Logan uncrosses her arms.
LOGAN
This isn't getting anywhere. Dru open the door.
Logan grabs the handle as Dru tries to unlock the door. The door doesn't open and
locks again. Dru tries again. Logan grabs the handle. Same result.
DRU
Logan. Please. Don't grab the...
Logan looks up blankly.
LOGAN
What?
Dru pounces on the moment and hits the unlock button. Door unlocks. Logan jumps in the
backseat closing the door behind her, reaches in the front, and locks all doors.
LOGAN
I'm not opening the door until you two kiss and make up.
Logan watches through the window, sheltered from harm, as the drama continues. Zik is
standing in defiance, still with his arms crossed, legs at thirty six degrees. It's
clear he's not budging until he gets an apology.
DRU

I'm sorry Zik.
ZIK
You mean it?
DRU
Yes Zik.
Zik boops Dru on the nose, flashes a devious smile, and gallivants around to the
passenger side of the vehicle. Logan hits the unlock button. It's an old, 2006, grey,
beat up Nissan Versa with a duct taped front bumper and a beer can laden interior;
Texas license plates. Zik moves Bud heavies out of the way as he enters the passenger
side. Dru does a hail Mary before entering the driver’s seat and closing the door.
INT. OF VEHICLE, THROUGH WINDSHIELD.
Zik puts his seatbelt on as Dru starts the engine and puts the car in reverse.
ZIK
Safety first.
Dru puts his foot on the brake, stops the car, and reaxhes for his seatbelt.
DRU
I'm not entirely sure seatbelts even save...
Logan cuts off Dru.
LOGAN
Seatbelts have lectins in them and lectins...
Dru cuts off Logan.
DRU
Shut the fuck up Logan and pass the bong.
LOGAN
Hold on. Not finished packing it yet.
DRU
Slacker.
Dru backs out of the parking space and speeds off. "Remind Me" by Röyksopp starts
playing in the background. We see exterior shots of the car driving down the street
mixed with shots of Hollywood. The three bob heads "Night at the Roxbury" style.
We see Logan packing the bong, taking a hit, and passing it to Dru.
DRU
Zik, hold the wheel!
Zik grabs the wheel but he grabs it uncomfortably low. Dru has already picked up the
lighter and started committing to the rip before he notices Zik's hand positioning.
DRU
Whoa, back off buddy!
ZIK
Fine!
Zik lets go of the wheel and the car veers off course. Logan and Dru scream in unison.
Zik smiles as he grabs the wheel, this time about an inch higher. Logan and Dru
breathe a sigh of relief as the situation deescalates.

ZIK
Is that better?
DRU
Not rea...
Zik goes to take his hand off the wheel again. Logan and Dru scream in unison once
more. Zik puts his hand back on the wheel with a smirk on his face.
ZIK
That's what I thought.
Dru catches Logan smirking in the rearview as well. They reenact "Fast and Furious."
DRU
What are you smiling about?
LOGAN
Dude, I almost had you.
DRU
You almost had me? You never had me. You never had your car.
Dru takes another massive bong rip. Music rides out. All three return to bobbing
heads, singing along, and dancing happily together as they travel to work. "And
anywhere I go, there’s always something to remind me, of another place and time,
where love that followed far had found me..."
EXT. OF VEHICLE, STREET VIEW.
Vehicle is full of smoke as it drives past from left to right. Vehicle continues past
a string of restaurants, shops, and venues on Ventura Boulevard. They pull into a
largely empty parking lot save for a few cars. All three characters are visible from
profile view as the vehicle glides into a parking space.
FADE OUT.

PILOT EPISODE (PART 2)
SYNOPSIS
We watch as Logan, Zik, and Dru make their way into The Shack. They have a brief
interaction with Johnny and Ashley who are smoking a joint by the dumpster. As the
three enter the building, they run into their manager J.O. During a lackluster shift
meeting, we're joined by Rico, resident mixologist at The Shack. Organized chaos
ensues as we're introduced to the staff and their "independent nature."
J.O. is a slightly ripped, short haired, white coked up, energetic, OCD
manager who sometimes gets aggressive with his unruly staff. He listens to
country music, flies an American flag, and drives a pickup truck. He really
cares about his staff and constantly goes out of his way to look out for them.
JOHNNY is a short, slender, long haired, racially ambiguous server with glasses
and a Napoleon Complex. His father was a drunk who used to beat him. Because of
this, Johnny doesn't touch alcohol or handle his emotions well. His mentality
is that the world is out to get him and he's not budging from that mindset.
ASHLEY is a curvy, tomboyish, black haired, Eastern European, millennial, host
with an eclectic style and attitude to match. She's surprisingly well versed
for her age and likes to get into political and scientific discussions when
she's not busy tripping face in the Hollywood Hills.
RICO is a blonde haired, light skinned, devilishly handsome, South American
bartender from Columbia. He's slightly older than the rest of the staff but
he's just entering college. This is because it took his 5 years to travel from
his hometown of Medellín to California, on foot, with his little brother Alex.
SCENE 1
FADE IN.
EXT. - THE PARKING LOT - DAY
CAMERA FIXED ON PROFILE VIEW OF VEHICLE PARKING.
Vehicle comes into view and lightly taps wall, halting to a stop. Passengers jolt
their heads in a fit of whiplash. Driver remains relatively stable.
LOGAN
What the fuck, Dru?
ZIK
Oh my Lord child what is wrong with you?

DRU
Gotta fix those brakes.
Logan, Zik, and Dru exit the vehicle. "Island in the Sun" by Weezer starts playing.
It's beach weather. Logan and Zik walk a good ways across the parking lot and approach
The Shack while Dru skateboards in an elliptical behind them. We see camera shots of
patio, signs, and knickknacks. There are tiki torches, surf boards, and flip flops
galore. Gay pride and jolly roger flags swaying flamboyantly in the wind.
CAMERA STOPS AT THRESHOLD.
Zik pauses and checks underneath his arm as if he forgot something.
ZIK
Uhoh, hold on, my apron.
ANGLE FIXED ON ZIK AND DRU.
DRU
All that trouble and you left it in the car.
ZIK
Shut your mouth and hold my kale smoothie, bitch.
Zik hands Dru the container he was holding. It's actually a kale smoothie.
CAMERA PANS WITH ZIK, FOLLOWS FROM BEHIND.
Dru watches as Zik bolts to the vehicle. Dru unlocks the door from afar.
DRU
Now you're talkin' dirty!
Zik yells behind him.
ZIK
Don't threaten me with a good time.
Zik opens the driver side door, leans in promiscuously, and fumbles around for his
apron on the passenger side for a moment. He finds what he's looking for, gracefully
exits the vehicle backwards. He does an about face, poses in vogue, and slams the door
behind him. He quickly strides back to Logan who is watching the spectacle. The two
continue their voyage into the Shack.
CAMERA STAYS ON ZIK.
Dru is skateboarding in a figure eight around Logan and Zik while drinking Zik's
smoothie. On the second pass Zik swats for his smoothie but misses. As Dru passes the
third time, Zik reaches out and grabs his smoothie violently.
ZIK
Thanks lover.
Dru maintains balance circles around once more. The two graze cheek to cheek, only
millimeters apart.
DRU
No problem queen.
Dru turns away and rides off dramatically. Zik scoffs.
CUT TO NEXT.

SCENE 2
ANGLE FIXED WITH DUMPSTER ON LEFT AS GROUP PASSES.
EXT. - THE ALLEY - DAY
Logan, Zik, and Dru continue to The Shack; however, Dru veers off right. Johnny and
Ashley are posted up at the dumpster partaking in a ritualistic pre-shift joint. "on
an island in the sun, we'll be playing and having fun, and it makes me feel..."
DRU
What’s up you clown ass mother fuckers!?
Dru rolls up Johnny and Ashley as they exchange insults. Johnny passes Dru the joint
as he falls backwards and stumbles off of his board. The joint is safe.
JOHNNY
Man, aren’t your parents acrobats or some shit?
ASHLEY
I know you’re not talking with your peanut ass looking head!
Zik and Logan continue walking as Dru takes a hit of the joint. In a gesture of false-
animosity, he blows the smoke in Ashley’s face and hands the joint back to Johnny.
DRU
Man, fuck you guys.
Dru says jokingly serious as he jumps back on his board and rides off to regroup with
Logan and Zik, who have now almost gotten to The Shack.
O.S
JOHNNY
See ya inside!
ASHLEY
I hope you die!
CUT TO NEXT.
SCENE 3
ANGLE FIXED ON FRONT ENTRANCE, FROM INSIDE.
INT. - THE BAR - DAY
Logan and Zik enter The Shack. They pass through a covered hut-like walkway with a
wooden bridge and enter the patio. Host stand is on the left, the outside bar is
straight ahead, and the kitchen and dining room are in the distance. Moe is prepping
the bar in the background. He doesn't look up or acknowledge anyone.
CUT TO DRU RIDING DOWN RAMP.
J.O. pops his head out from behind the host stand like he's stalking prey. The camera
does a close up and "Straight Edge" by Minor threat blares. His eyes are completely
bloodshot and he’s way too hyper to have only been drinking coffee.
CUT TO DRU.
DRU

Watch out!
Dru almost runs Zik over and flicks him off as he passes. Dru rides over the bridge
and past the host stand. J.O. puts his foot out and trips Dru. He spills hard. J.O.
has been waiting to confront Dru about missing the previous two shifts. Dru gets up
slowly, in pain, one knee first, then stands, and dusts himself off.
J.O.
Where were you Friday and Saturday night?
LOGAN
I was on acid.
Zik places hand on Logan’s mouth.
DRU
I told you like a month in advance I had a show.
J.O.
A no call no show?
DRU
No, a show. With my band.
J.O.
Well I had to put Ashley on the floor and she served an entire tray of
tequila shots to an eight year old's soccer party.
LOGAN
Oh yeees!
ZIK
Ouch.
RICO
I think we're gonna lose our liquor license...
DRU
How is that my problem?
J.O.
Yeah, you’re right.
J.O. yells out as he punches an unsuspecting Dru in the chest.
J.O.
Shift meeting!
Dru steps back stunned and rubs his chest in agony. Logan and Zik laugh
unsympathetically. The camera zooms past Dru to a closeup of J.O.'s face again.
"Straight Edge" plays with cymbals crashing and inaudible yelling.
CUT TO WIDE ANGLE ON PATIO.
Dru continues to rub his chest as the crew emerges from the four corners of The Shack.
Their lackadaisical nature juxtaposed to J.O. and his "Full Metal Jacket" attitude.
DRU
Ow, is that even legal?
J.O.
Stop being a bitch.

O.S.
RICO
Ayoo!
SCENE 4
INT. - THE PATIO - DAY
The shift meeting commences. The staff gathers around the bar at a surfboard table.
J.O. speaks.
J.O.
Quick! What does excellent service mean to you!?”
J.O. points to Logan.
LOGAN
Huh?
J.O.
Never mind.
Johnny quietly turns to Logan, who is standing between her and Ashley.
JOHNNY
There’s no hope for you.
J.O. points to Rico.
J.O.
Rico!
Rico immediately replies as if he’d been harboring a secret hatred.
RICO
Fuck you.
J.O.
Wrong answer! Johnny!
J.O. points to Johnny who is texting on his cell phone. He takes a second to finish
the text he's sending out and without looking up, responds.
Johnny
Hmmm, I’m gonna have to go with...fuck you.
J.O.
Well played! Ashley your turn!
J.O. points to Ashley who's doing her eyeliner in the reflection of a knife.
CLOESUP ON ASHLEY.
The room goes quiet. Everyone stares. Ashley doesn’t stop doing her makeup. She
doesn’t look up. She pulls out lipstick, opens the cap, twists the bottom, lipstick
protrudes. She does her top lip, pauses.
ASHLEY
Fuck you.

Ashley continues doing her bottom lip.
CUT BACK TO GROUP.
J.O.
Okay, I think we’re plateauing here. Zik, bring us all the way!
ZIK
Excellent service is when you go the extra mile for the guest.
DRU
With blowjobs.
J.O. punches Dru in the stomach this time. He loses his breath and has to regain it.
JOHNNY
Gnarly!
ASHLEY
Jesus Christ!
RICO
Ayoo!
LOGAN
Whoaa.
ZIK
Are you okay?
J.O.
Let that be a lesson to anyone who wants to interrupt my shift meetings.
LOGAN
Don't interrupt my shift meetings!
RICO
Ayoo!
Ashley rises her hand as if she's in class.
ASHLEY
Uhh, I don't think you can do that.
J.O.
I can and I just did.
J.O. punks the staff by taking a step forward and they all take a step back. Except
for Rico, who leans into J.O. "Straight Edge" plays as camera zooms in on Rico.
DRU
Ug, I can’t work under these conditions.
ZIK
I'm calling OSHA, this is out of control.
LOGAN
I don't feel safe.
RICO
Watch out she's got a gun!
LOGAN

Pew, pew!
Logan grabs a sanitizer bottle and shoots it across the table nailing Dru in the face.
The crew laughs at Dru's expense as he wipes his sunglasses on his t-shirt.
J.O.
Yes Zik. Going above and beyond for the guest. You get a free meal for your
participation. Par-ti-ci-pa-tion. Work-eth-ic. Hard work. Dedication.
Perseverance. Always on stage. Guest right of way. Make eye contact. Move with
a purpose. Hustle. Make money. Stack money. Compound interest. Residual income.
Retirement. Any dreams, wishes, or desires other than money?
MOE
Cocaine and strippers! AYOO!
J.O. points his finger aimlessly at the crowd prodding for another answer. After a
momentary pause for reflection, a lightbulb goes off in Logan's head and she raises
her hand impatiently.
LOGAN
Oh, I wanna save the manatees!
J.O. points to Logan.
J.O.
Logan wants to save the manatees.
JOHNNY
I want to heal my relationship with my father.
J.O. looks at Johnny while still pointing at Logan.
J.O.
TMI Johnny, TMI.
Ashley puts her hand on Johnny’s shoulder to comfort him. He pretends to tear up.
ASHLEY
It’s okay.
JOHNNY
No, it’s not!
J.O. points to Dru.
J.O.
You're all an inspiration to me. Dru, bring us home baby!
DRU
Alright guys, life's a beach on three! 1, 2, 3...
The group energetically raise their hands in the air and chant in unison.
TEAM
Life's a bitch!
The intro from "BDE Bonus" by Mac Miller starts playing.
FADE OUT.

PILOT EPISODE (PART 3)
SYNOPSIS
We've just experienced a shift meeting at The Shack. Now, it's time to get on the
floor and wait some tables. Dru can smell the open road, the cool wind in his hair,
the sun gently beating upon his face. He starts to breeze towards his section when,
all of the sudden, he's pulled aside by J.O. What better way to cramp Dru's style than
by giving him a trainee on their first day? On the downside, he's not making any money
this brunch. On the upside, he gets a free meal, which, doesn't go unappreciated.
Dru's already thinking a little surf n' turf.
PATRICK is Dru's trainee. He's never worked in a restaurant before and it's
pretty evident he hasn't spent much time around people. Before long under Dru's
wing, Patrick is picking up females and skipping class. Dru's influence comes
to an apex when they have a run-in with the law and Dru, well, trips him.
SCENE 1
INT. - THE DINING ROOM - DAY
J.O. pulls Dru aside. A record scratches and the music stops.
J.O.
You know why I had you do that right?
DRU
Cause you don't have any bass in your voice?
J.O.
No. What? No. I’m, I'm promoting you.
DRU
To customer?

J.O. immediately fires back.
J.O.
To trainer.
Dru looks confused for a second, dips his head, nods, and exhales through nose.
DRU
So I no call no show and you promote me?
J.O.
It’s what you were asking for, right?
DRU
A promotion?
J.O.
Yeah.
DRU
Yeah, like three months ago.
J.O.
Well, you got your wish.
DRU
I asked to be a bartender.
J.O.
Be careful what you wish for.
DRU
I stopped wishing like three months ago.
J.O.
Well, good things come to those who wait.
Without skipping a beat J.O. pulls a new hire onto the screen.
J.O.
Dru, meet Patrick. Patrick, meet Dru.
J.O. massages Patrick's right shoulder.
J.O.
Dru’s gonna show you the ropes. If you need me, I’ll be in the office.
J.O. mildly taps Dru twice in the arm and walks off screen, sniffling.
ANGLE SQUARE ON PATRICK’S FACE.
Silence.
CUT TO DRU'S FACE.
Silence.
CUT BACK TO PATRICK, THEN TO A PROFILE VIEW OF THE TWO.
DRU.
What day are you on?
PATRICK

Have you ever waited tables before?

  • 1. 1 HURRY UP & WAIT PILOT EPISODE (PART 1) SYNOPSIS It's a lazy Sunday morning. Three roommates, Logan, Zik, and Dru, are slowly getting ready for a brunch shift at The Shack, a beach-themed full-service restaurant in Hollywood, CA. They live together in a modest three bedroom two bath apartment in a quiet neighborhood outside of the main city. It's patio weather. LOGAN is a young, slender, bisexual, Wiccan, anarchist, Asian female with an eccentric personality. She's a modern-day hippie. She's from Colorado and is an aspiring Hollywood actor and comedian. So far, she's only landed a few supporting roles in daytime sitcoms and Asian energy drink commercials. ZIK is a tall, dark skinned, fabulously gay, agnostic, liberal, black male with a mysterious past. He's always bright, cheerful, and outspoken. He's from Chicago and is an aspiring civil rights lawyer with a background in the arts. His claim to fame is being a dancer for Beyoncé’s Summer Tour Extravaganza. DRU is the antithesis of Logan and Zik. An average looking, brown haired, straight, Christian, conservative, white male with a military background. He's both ignorant and intolerant but changes over time. He's from Austin and moved to Hollywood to form his band Lenny and the Space Heaters. They've gained some local notoriety and are opening for artists like Ballyhoo! SCENE 1 FADE IN. INT. - THE APARTMENT - DAY "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" by LCD Soundsystem is blaring. We see shots of the apartment as the camera makes it through the hallway to Logan, who is in the kitchen making coffee. She opens a cabinet, takes out a bag of coffee, and a filter. CLOSE UP ON LOGAN. She puts the filter in the machine, scoops a scoop out of the bag, and misses the filter. This results in a good portion of the grinds ending up on the counter. She looks down for a second, then wipes the mess onto the floor and sweeps it under the stove with her foot. She tries again; this time, successful. She presses the brew button and the aroma of fresh coffee rises through the air. CAMERA WIDE ANGLE ON LOGAN. Logan begins cooking pancakes for herself. She takes a box of pancake mix from the pantry; a bowl from under the sink; eggs from inside the fridge. She pours water, cracks the eggs, and pulls out a yellow, smiley face spatula from a drawer. She mixes the batter carelessly, flinging some of the contents. She hums and sings along as she works: "you gotta set them up kid, set them up!" OVER SHOULDER. We see an oversized pancake being poured, browning, and being flipped. She places her oversized pancake on a plate and arranges a sliced banana into a smiley face. She haphazardly throws a handful of chocolate chips at her creation, resulting in a masterpiece. Amused, she smiles as she reaches to place her dish on the other side of the island. A counter and three bar stools face her. CAMERA WIDE ANGLE ON LOGAN.
  • 2. 2 She glides backwards, spins, and opens the cupboard in tremendous fashion. She takes out three mugs, slides sideways over to the coffee machine, and pours three cups although she's the only one on screen. CLOSE UP ON COFFEE MUGS. Each mug has a drastically different personality. Logan's has a pentagram and a goat with devil horns. Zik's has a rainbow design with unicorns. Dru's is a green camouflage mug that reads "ARMY." Logan slides mugs forward into camera. CAMERA WIDE ANGLE ON KITCHEN. Music fades out. Enters Zik. LOGAN Good morning queen. ZIK Good morning lover. Logan and Zik kiss on both cheeks as they sit down at the kitchen counter. Dru comes out of the bathroom down the hall and approaches the two from a distance. As he does, Logan attempts to hand him a piping hot cup of coffee. DRU In a sec, I just brushed my teeth. Yaknow I was reading that coffee beans have lectins in them and lectins... Dru is interrupted by Logan smoking a bong. He pauses mid-sentence and looks at Logan. DRU Is that the new stuff? LOGAN Fuck Yeah. Logan passes the bong to Dru. Dru obliges. ZIK Mmmhmm look at you partaking in the devil's lettuce. LOGAN We corrupted him. DRU For your information, guys, I was already corrupted. Dru takes a huge hit and blindly passes the bong to Zik as he coughs uncontrollably. LOGAN Daaaamn, cough city! ZIK Good Lord child you are going to kill yourself. Dru passes bong to Logan as she takes a rip off camera. Dru remains the focus. DRU Alright, I'm high, I'm gonna go get ready. LOGAN
  • 3. 3 Yeah, hurry up the fuck up! ZIK Gotta seize the day! CUT TO DRU'S BEDROOM. We see a few guitars, acoustic and electric, a large Marshall amplifier, Blink-182 and Transformers posters, a crossbow, and 00's memorabilia scattered throughout. Throwing stars, boxes of .223 ammo, and Playboy magazines are strewn across the floor. Empty Shiner Bock and Jack Daniel's bottles sit on the windowsill along with a folded American flag in a wooden and glass case, obviously belonging to a WW1 or 2 era deceased relative. Other than the mess, Dru's living space is modest. There's no bedframe, no dresser; only a mattress on the floor. We hear Zik preparing a smoothie in the kitchen as Dru mumbles to himself. DRU Jeans, shirt... Dru smells shirt, throws it over his shoulder. DRU Other shirt, socks, no, black socks, can’t forget the belt, where’s my apron? Dru walks back into the kitchen. CAMERA FOLLOWS DRU. DRU Guys, where's my apron? Logan and Zik respond in unison, throwing hands down to sides. LOGAN Beats me. ZIK No idea. Dru continues looking for apron in the living room, in the background, while Logan and Zik talk about the upcoming shift. Zik begins ironing his apron while Logan eats her smiley face pancakes; extra syrup. "Mystery Science Theater 3000" is on the TV. CUT TO LOGAN AND ZIK. ZIK I hope it's busy I need to make money. LOGAN I hope it's slow I'm not really feeling it today. CUT TO CLOSEUP BEHIND DRU. Dru lifts up a random female who is laying on the couch asleep. He finds his apron underneath. Dru brushes his wrinkled apron off as he turns to speak to Logan. CAMERA PANS WITH DRU. DRU Is your friend just gonna lay here the entire day again? LOGAN
  • 4. 4 I dunno, ask her. Dru looks down at the lifeless female and shakes his head in disapproval. DRU Are you guys ready to go? LOGAN Yessir! ZIK Hold on mister! I am not finished ironing my apron. DRU Who irons their apron anyways? Logan mocks Dru. LOGAN For your information aprons have lectins in them and lectins can... Dru cuts off Logan as he pulls out a pack of Marlboro Reds; cowboy killers. DRU Do you want a cigarette or not? LOGAN Yes please! Logan and Dru pick up their belongings; Logan first, Dru second. The two step out front for a smoke as Zik finishes ironing his apron. Dru talks to himself as he passes through the threshold. DRU Hurry up and wait, story of my life. Dru closes door behind him. CAMERA STAYS ON ZIK. Zik puts his server book, pens, wine key, and a lighter in his apron. He folds his apron delicately and tucks it under his arm as he walks out the door. CAMERA FOLLOWS ZIK TO THE DOOR. Door closes behind Zik and we see it being locked from the outside. CUT TO NEXT. SCENE 2 ANGLE ON ZIK EXITING. LOGAN AND DRU ON CAMERA. EXT. - THE APARTMENT - DAY Logan and Dru take a few last puffs of their cigarettes before putting them out. The two are finishing a heated discussion over George Orwell's "1984" and a Ronald Regan bird conspiracy theory. It's clear neither one of them trust the government. ZIK That is such a nasty habit.
  • 5. 5 DRU Says the gay man. Zik scoffs at Dru as he turns dramatically and walks away towards the car. Logan follows Zik, confiding him, as Dru lags behind unempathetically. LOGAN Zik, he didn't mean it. DRU You'd think if you could take a dick you could take a joke. Logan and Zik are standing at car when Dru arrives. Both with arms crossed. LOGAN Apologize. DRU No. I didn't do anything. LOGAN You called him gay. DRU He is. ZIK I know I am but what are you? DRU. Gay! Wait. ZIK Ha! Logan uncrosses her arms. LOGAN This isn't getting anywhere. Dru open the door. Logan grabs the handle as Dru tries to unlock the door. The door doesn't open and locks again. Dru tries again. Logan grabs the handle. Same result. DRU Logan. Please. Don't grab the... Logan looks up blankly. LOGAN What? Dru pounces on the moment and hits the unlock button. Door unlocks. Logan jumps in the backseat closing the door behind her, reaches in the front, and locks all doors. LOGAN I'm not opening the door until you two kiss and make up. Logan watches through the window, sheltered from harm, as the drama continues. Zik is standing in defiance, still with his arms crossed, legs at thirty six degrees. It's clear he's not budging until he gets an apology. DRU
  • 6. 6 I'm sorry Zik. ZIK You mean it? DRU Yes Zik. Zik boops Dru on the nose, flashes a devious smile, and gallivants around to the passenger side of the vehicle. Logan hits the unlock button. It's an old, 2006, grey, beat up Nissan Versa with a duct taped front bumper and a beer can laden interior; Texas license plates. Zik moves Bud heavies out of the way as he enters the passenger side. Dru does a hail Mary before entering the driver’s seat and closing the door. INT. OF VEHICLE, THROUGH WINDSHIELD. Zik puts his seatbelt on as Dru starts the engine and puts the car in reverse. ZIK Safety first. Dru puts his foot on the brake, stops the car, and reaxhes for his seatbelt. DRU I'm not entirely sure seatbelts even save... Logan cuts off Dru. LOGAN Seatbelts have lectins in them and lectins... Dru cuts off Logan. DRU Shut the fuck up Logan and pass the bong. LOGAN Hold on. Not finished packing it yet. DRU Slacker. Dru backs out of the parking space and speeds off. "Remind Me" by Röyksopp starts playing in the background. We see exterior shots of the car driving down the street mixed with shots of Hollywood. The three bob heads "Night at the Roxbury" style. We see Logan packing the bong, taking a hit, and passing it to Dru. DRU Zik, hold the wheel! Zik grabs the wheel but he grabs it uncomfortably low. Dru has already picked up the lighter and started committing to the rip before he notices Zik's hand positioning. DRU Whoa, back off buddy! ZIK Fine! Zik lets go of the wheel and the car veers off course. Logan and Dru scream in unison. Zik smiles as he grabs the wheel, this time about an inch higher. Logan and Dru breathe a sigh of relief as the situation deescalates.
  • 7. 7 ZIK Is that better? DRU Not rea... Zik goes to take his hand off the wheel again. Logan and Dru scream in unison once more. Zik puts his hand back on the wheel with a smirk on his face. ZIK That's what I thought. Dru catches Logan smirking in the rearview as well. They reenact "Fast and Furious." DRU What are you smiling about? LOGAN Dude, I almost had you. DRU You almost had me? You never had me. You never had your car. Dru takes another massive bong rip. Music rides out. All three return to bobbing heads, singing along, and dancing happily together as they travel to work. "And anywhere I go, there’s always something to remind me, of another place and time, where love that followed far had found me..." EXT. OF VEHICLE, STREET VIEW. Vehicle is full of smoke as it drives past from left to right. Vehicle continues past a string of restaurants, shops, and venues on Ventura Boulevard. They pull into a largely empty parking lot save for a few cars. All three characters are visible from profile view as the vehicle glides into a parking space. FADE OUT.
  • 8. 8 HURRY UP & WAIT PILOT EPISODE (PART 2) SYNOPSIS We watch as Logan, Zik, and Dru make their way into The Shack. They have a brief interaction with Johnny and Ashley who are smoking a joint by the dumpster. As the three enter the building, they run into their manager J.O. During a lackluster shift meeting, we're joined by Rico, resident mixologist at The Shack. Organized chaos ensues as we're introduced to the staff and their "independent nature." J.O. is a slightly ripped, short haired, white coked up, energetic, OCD manager who sometimes gets aggressive with his unruly staff. He listens to country music, flies an American flag, and drives a pickup truck. He really cares about his staff and constantly goes out of his way to look out for them. JOHNNY is a short, slender, long haired, racially ambiguous server with glasses and a Napoleon Complex. His father was a drunk who used to beat him. Because of this, Johnny doesn't touch alcohol or handle his emotions well. His mentality is that the world is out to get him and he's not budging from that mindset. ASHLEY is a curvy, tomboyish, black haired, Eastern European, millennial, host with an eclectic style and attitude to match. She's surprisingly well versed for her age and likes to get into political and scientific discussions when she's not busy tripping face in the Hollywood Hills. RICO is a blonde haired, light skinned, devilishly handsome, South American bartender from Columbia. He's slightly older than the rest of the staff but he's just entering college. This is because it took his 5 years to travel from his hometown of Medellín to California, on foot, with his little brother Alex. SCENE 1 FADE IN. EXT. - THE PARKING LOT - DAY CAMERA FIXED ON PROFILE VIEW OF VEHICLE PARKING. Vehicle comes into view and lightly taps wall, halting to a stop. Passengers jolt their heads in a fit of whiplash. Driver remains relatively stable. LOGAN What the fuck, Dru? ZIK Oh my Lord child what is wrong with you?
  • 9. 9 DRU Gotta fix those brakes. Logan, Zik, and Dru exit the vehicle. "Island in the Sun" by Weezer starts playing. It's beach weather. Logan and Zik walk a good ways across the parking lot and approach The Shack while Dru skateboards in an elliptical behind them. We see camera shots of patio, signs, and knickknacks. There are tiki torches, surf boards, and flip flops galore. Gay pride and jolly roger flags swaying flamboyantly in the wind. CAMERA STOPS AT THRESHOLD. Zik pauses and checks underneath his arm as if he forgot something. ZIK Uhoh, hold on, my apron. ANGLE FIXED ON ZIK AND DRU. DRU All that trouble and you left it in the car. ZIK Shut your mouth and hold my kale smoothie, bitch. Zik hands Dru the container he was holding. It's actually a kale smoothie. CAMERA PANS WITH ZIK, FOLLOWS FROM BEHIND. Dru watches as Zik bolts to the vehicle. Dru unlocks the door from afar. DRU Now you're talkin' dirty! Zik yells behind him. ZIK Don't threaten me with a good time. Zik opens the driver side door, leans in promiscuously, and fumbles around for his apron on the passenger side for a moment. He finds what he's looking for, gracefully exits the vehicle backwards. He does an about face, poses in vogue, and slams the door behind him. He quickly strides back to Logan who is watching the spectacle. The two continue their voyage into the Shack. CAMERA STAYS ON ZIK. Dru is skateboarding in a figure eight around Logan and Zik while drinking Zik's smoothie. On the second pass Zik swats for his smoothie but misses. As Dru passes the third time, Zik reaches out and grabs his smoothie violently. ZIK Thanks lover. Dru maintains balance circles around once more. The two graze cheek to cheek, only millimeters apart. DRU No problem queen. Dru turns away and rides off dramatically. Zik scoffs. CUT TO NEXT.
  • 10. 10 SCENE 2 ANGLE FIXED WITH DUMPSTER ON LEFT AS GROUP PASSES. EXT. - THE ALLEY - DAY Logan, Zik, and Dru continue to The Shack; however, Dru veers off right. Johnny and Ashley are posted up at the dumpster partaking in a ritualistic pre-shift joint. "on an island in the sun, we'll be playing and having fun, and it makes me feel..." DRU What’s up you clown ass mother fuckers!? Dru rolls up Johnny and Ashley as they exchange insults. Johnny passes Dru the joint as he falls backwards and stumbles off of his board. The joint is safe. JOHNNY Man, aren’t your parents acrobats or some shit? ASHLEY I know you’re not talking with your peanut ass looking head! Zik and Logan continue walking as Dru takes a hit of the joint. In a gesture of false- animosity, he blows the smoke in Ashley’s face and hands the joint back to Johnny. DRU Man, fuck you guys. Dru says jokingly serious as he jumps back on his board and rides off to regroup with Logan and Zik, who have now almost gotten to The Shack. O.S JOHNNY See ya inside! ASHLEY I hope you die! CUT TO NEXT. SCENE 3 ANGLE FIXED ON FRONT ENTRANCE, FROM INSIDE. INT. - THE BAR - DAY Logan and Zik enter The Shack. They pass through a covered hut-like walkway with a wooden bridge and enter the patio. Host stand is on the left, the outside bar is straight ahead, and the kitchen and dining room are in the distance. Moe is prepping the bar in the background. He doesn't look up or acknowledge anyone. CUT TO DRU RIDING DOWN RAMP. J.O. pops his head out from behind the host stand like he's stalking prey. The camera does a close up and "Straight Edge" by Minor threat blares. His eyes are completely bloodshot and he’s way too hyper to have only been drinking coffee. CUT TO DRU. DRU
  • 11. 11 Watch out! Dru almost runs Zik over and flicks him off as he passes. Dru rides over the bridge and past the host stand. J.O. puts his foot out and trips Dru. He spills hard. J.O. has been waiting to confront Dru about missing the previous two shifts. Dru gets up slowly, in pain, one knee first, then stands, and dusts himself off. J.O. Where were you Friday and Saturday night? LOGAN I was on acid. Zik places hand on Logan’s mouth. DRU I told you like a month in advance I had a show. J.O. A no call no show? DRU No, a show. With my band. J.O. Well I had to put Ashley on the floor and she served an entire tray of tequila shots to an eight year old's soccer party. LOGAN Oh yeees! ZIK Ouch. RICO I think we're gonna lose our liquor license... DRU How is that my problem? J.O. Yeah, you’re right. J.O. yells out as he punches an unsuspecting Dru in the chest. J.O. Shift meeting! Dru steps back stunned and rubs his chest in agony. Logan and Zik laugh unsympathetically. The camera zooms past Dru to a closeup of J.O.'s face again. "Straight Edge" plays with cymbals crashing and inaudible yelling. CUT TO WIDE ANGLE ON PATIO. Dru continues to rub his chest as the crew emerges from the four corners of The Shack. Their lackadaisical nature juxtaposed to J.O. and his "Full Metal Jacket" attitude. DRU Ow, is that even legal? J.O. Stop being a bitch.
  • 12. 12 O.S. RICO Ayoo! SCENE 4 INT. - THE PATIO - DAY The shift meeting commences. The staff gathers around the bar at a surfboard table. J.O. speaks. J.O. Quick! What does excellent service mean to you!?” J.O. points to Logan. LOGAN Huh? J.O. Never mind. Johnny quietly turns to Logan, who is standing between her and Ashley. JOHNNY There’s no hope for you. J.O. points to Rico. J.O. Rico! Rico immediately replies as if he’d been harboring a secret hatred. RICO Fuck you. J.O. Wrong answer! Johnny! J.O. points to Johnny who is texting on his cell phone. He takes a second to finish the text he's sending out and without looking up, responds. Johnny Hmmm, I’m gonna have to go with...fuck you. J.O. Well played! Ashley your turn! J.O. points to Ashley who's doing her eyeliner in the reflection of a knife. CLOESUP ON ASHLEY. The room goes quiet. Everyone stares. Ashley doesn’t stop doing her makeup. She doesn’t look up. She pulls out lipstick, opens the cap, twists the bottom, lipstick protrudes. She does her top lip, pauses. ASHLEY Fuck you.
  • 13. 13 Ashley continues doing her bottom lip. CUT BACK TO GROUP. J.O. Okay, I think we’re plateauing here. Zik, bring us all the way! ZIK Excellent service is when you go the extra mile for the guest. DRU With blowjobs. J.O. punches Dru in the stomach this time. He loses his breath and has to regain it. JOHNNY Gnarly! ASHLEY Jesus Christ! RICO Ayoo! LOGAN Whoaa. ZIK Are you okay? J.O. Let that be a lesson to anyone who wants to interrupt my shift meetings. LOGAN Don't interrupt my shift meetings! RICO Ayoo! Ashley rises her hand as if she's in class. ASHLEY Uhh, I don't think you can do that. J.O. I can and I just did. J.O. punks the staff by taking a step forward and they all take a step back. Except for Rico, who leans into J.O. "Straight Edge" plays as camera zooms in on Rico. DRU Ug, I can’t work under these conditions. ZIK I'm calling OSHA, this is out of control. LOGAN I don't feel safe. RICO Watch out she's got a gun! LOGAN
  • 14. 14 Pew, pew! Logan grabs a sanitizer bottle and shoots it across the table nailing Dru in the face. The crew laughs at Dru's expense as he wipes his sunglasses on his t-shirt. J.O. Yes Zik. Going above and beyond for the guest. You get a free meal for your participation. Par-ti-ci-pa-tion. Work-eth-ic. Hard work. Dedication. Perseverance. Always on stage. Guest right of way. Make eye contact. Move with a purpose. Hustle. Make money. Stack money. Compound interest. Residual income. Retirement. Any dreams, wishes, or desires other than money? MOE Cocaine and strippers! AYOO! J.O. points his finger aimlessly at the crowd prodding for another answer. After a momentary pause for reflection, a lightbulb goes off in Logan's head and she raises her hand impatiently. LOGAN Oh, I wanna save the manatees! J.O. points to Logan. J.O. Logan wants to save the manatees. JOHNNY I want to heal my relationship with my father. J.O. looks at Johnny while still pointing at Logan. J.O. TMI Johnny, TMI. Ashley puts her hand on Johnny’s shoulder to comfort him. He pretends to tear up. ASHLEY It’s okay. JOHNNY No, it’s not! J.O. points to Dru. J.O. You're all an inspiration to me. Dru, bring us home baby! DRU Alright guys, life's a beach on three! 1, 2, 3... The group energetically raise their hands in the air and chant in unison. TEAM Life's a bitch! The intro from "BDE Bonus" by Mac Miller starts playing. FADE OUT.
  • 15. 15 HURRY UP & WAIT PILOT EPISODE (PART 3) SYNOPSIS We've just experienced a shift meeting at The Shack. Now, it's time to get on the floor and wait some tables. Dru can smell the open road, the cool wind in his hair, the sun gently beating upon his face. He starts to breeze towards his section when, all of the sudden, he's pulled aside by J.O. What better way to cramp Dru's style than by giving him a trainee on their first day? On the downside, he's not making any money this brunch. On the upside, he gets a free meal, which, doesn't go unappreciated. Dru's already thinking a little surf n' turf. PATRICK is Dru's trainee. He's never worked in a restaurant before and it's pretty evident he hasn't spent much time around people. Before long under Dru's wing, Patrick is picking up females and skipping class. Dru's influence comes to an apex when they have a run-in with the law and Dru, well, trips him. SCENE 1 INT. - THE DINING ROOM - DAY J.O. pulls Dru aside. A record scratches and the music stops. J.O. You know why I had you do that right? DRU Cause you don't have any bass in your voice? J.O. No. What? No. I’m, I'm promoting you. DRU To customer?
  • 16. 16 J.O. immediately fires back. J.O. To trainer. Dru looks confused for a second, dips his head, nods, and exhales through nose. DRU So I no call no show and you promote me? J.O. It’s what you were asking for, right? DRU A promotion? J.O. Yeah. DRU Yeah, like three months ago. J.O. Well, you got your wish. DRU I asked to be a bartender. J.O. Be careful what you wish for. DRU I stopped wishing like three months ago. J.O. Well, good things come to those who wait. Without skipping a beat J.O. pulls a new hire onto the screen. J.O. Dru, meet Patrick. Patrick, meet Dru. J.O. massages Patrick's right shoulder. J.O. Dru’s gonna show you the ropes. If you need me, I’ll be in the office. J.O. mildly taps Dru twice in the arm and walks off screen, sniffling. ANGLE SQUARE ON PATRICK’S FACE. Silence. CUT TO DRU'S FACE. Silence. CUT BACK TO PATRICK, THEN TO A PROFILE VIEW OF THE TWO. DRU. What day are you on? PATRICK

Audience goes introspectively into Dru’s thought process. CUT TO HOST STAND. V.O. Table numbers... CUT TO EXPO. V.O. Menu knowledge... CUT TO BAR. V.O. Drink knowledge... CUT TO COMPUTERS. V.O. Possie skills... CUT TO DINING ROOM. V.O. Steps of service... CUT TO PATIO. V.O. People skills. CUT BACK TO DRU. DRU Alright, first things first, let’s get you educated on the ladies. Dru goes through the process of breaking down every female in the building. Likes, dislikes, dating history, kinks. Patrick is silent. DRU Oh, you’re into dudes! Why didn’t you say so! We got Zik over there, he’s super gay, will totally blow you. He’s the owner of the glory hole in the employee bathroom just in case you were wondering. PATRICK
