1. Riga Technical University is the oldest technical
university in the Baltics, offering advanced study
programs in all major fields. The Institute of Heat,
Gas and Water Technology is part of the Faculty of
Civil Engineering at RTU and the largest educational
and research institution in the field of heat, gas and
water technologies in Latvia.
For more than ten years the Institute has been
actively working on the implementation of energy
efficiency measures in heating, ventilation and
air-conditioning systems and optimizing the use of
renewable energy sources in the building sector as
well as in drinking water treatment and supply.

2. Our team consists of highly qualified staff that has a
strong theoretical background as well as wide prac-
tical experience. Our main goal is to make studies
interesting and interactive providing real-life appli-
cations.
Academic Activities
develop a Bachelor/Master/Doctoral Thesis in
close cooperation with our industry partners;
participate in student exchange programs;
make research at modern energy-efficient build-
ing and water research laboratories;
participate in scientific projects.
Professional Bachelor Study Program
The main aim of the study program is to educate
and train specialists in the field of heat, gas and
water technologies so that they are competitive in
the Latvian and international labor markets. We
provide a theoretical background for the design of
treatment plants with practical application activi-
ties (laboratory work) to test most of the treatment
steps in practice. Graduates are able to design,
The program focuses on the research of smart
cities, their building engineering systems and infra-
structure elements. Research topics include heat-
ing systems, cooling and air-conditioning systems,
ventilation, gas supply, water and waste water
supply, sewerage and systems. Over the past two
years, the program has been modified in collabor-
tion with partners from the University of Strath-
clyde (Glasgow, UK) under the FP7 project
«STEP-UP – Strategies Towards Energy Performance
and Urban Planning».
Professional Master Study Program
Doctoral Study Program
The Doctoral study program provides a balance
between the development of creative skills and
advanced knowledge of practical research tools
and methods. Course materials are regularly
reviewed, updated and improved to reflect the
latest trends in the field. During the implementa-
tion of Doctoral study program, it is intended to
continue active research on such topics as energy
efficiency of buildings and their engineering
systems, as well as problems of microclimate and
water systems.
Scientific Activities
The staff of the Institute has developed various
methods and solutions for constructing low-ener-
gy buildings as well as technical solutions for
improving energy efficiency of existing mul-
ti-apartment buildings.
The Institute has a modern laboratory on buildings
and HVAC energy efficiency and water research
laboratory.

«Energy-Efficient Infrastructure for Smart Cities».
Our programs are continuously developed accord-
ing to the growing needs for human-friendly and
energy-efficient environments.
The major research directions are related to the
development of new energy-efficient water tech-
nologies for drinking water treatment and for
molecular methods to detect various pathogens in
water, biofilm, microorganisms in biofuel produc-
tion streams.
