Elton John was born Reginald Dwight in 1947 in England and began playing piano at age 4. He struggled with addiction and eating disorders in the 1970s-1980s due to hiding his sexuality. After friend Freddie Mercury's death from AIDS in 1991, Elton John founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation to support HIV/AIDS prevention and help eliminate stigma. Through his music and foundation, he has advocated for LGBTQ rights and acceptance.
