Learning Environment
CIT understands that students lead busy and varied
lives. We pride ourselves on providing a variety of study
options, making it easier for students to gain
a first-class education in the way that best suits them.
Many of our courses enable students to study
full-time or part-time, day or night, online or
off-campus. Courses vary in duration, and may
run during the day or evening. Check the course
information tables at the back of this publication
for more details.
FULL-TIME
Full-time study is a minimum of 15 hours a week,
although most courses also require additional study
time. Courses vary in duration, and may run during
the day or evening.
PART-TIME
Part-time study is a maximum of 15 hours a week.
Again, additional study time is usually expected but
a full-time commitment is not required.
eLEARN
All CIT students can benefit from CIT’s world class
eLearn environment. Students have access to learning
resources, communication with their teachers and other
support services through an online learning platform.
ONLINE, ON- OR OFF-CAMPUS
CIT’s eLearn environment supports students whether
they are studying face-to-face on-campus, fully
off-campus, in the workplace, or via one of CIT’s
flexible learning options.
FLEXIBLE LEARNING OPTIONS
Flexible learning options are ideal for those balancing
study with work or caring for a family and remove
the pressure to complete qualifications in a fixed time
frame. You start when you like and study where you
like, whether in the CIT Learning Centre, at home,
or in the workplace.
An increasing number of CIT courses can be studied
flexibly and accessed throughout the year at a CIT
Learning Centre. All flexible learning options provide
students with access to a specialist teacher. Visit
cit.edu.au for the latest list of flexible learning options.

sporting and recreational facilities. There are
also plenty of places to enjoy the social side
of being a student.
Our campuses are designed to enhance
a supportive learning environment. You will
find teachers and students working and
studying alongside each other.
You can also enjoy the benefits of having
trade centres on site, whether it is
discounted hair and beauty treatments,
or reasonably-priced meals prepared by
students and apprentices at the CIT Reid
campus’ own restaurant.

CIT Library and
Information Services
The library and information services, available at CIT’s
Learning Centres, provide access to the latest books,
journals and e-resources. Consult Learning Centre
staff members for help with research, or to discuss
your learning needs.
CIT’s Learning Centres are a valuable part of studying,
providing spaces for learning, access to information,
computers and the internet, printing and photocopying
facilities, a range of resources to support each course,
and areas for group and individual work.
Each campus has a Learning Centre and there are
also off-campus Learning Centres at Gungahlin and
Tuggeranong. Students can also access library and
information services, including expert staff, via the
website and CIT’s eLearn environment.
The popular Drop-in Learning Support program is
available for all students at the CIT Reid, CIT Woden
and CIT Bruce Learning Centres, with academic
support provided by specialist staff.
Learning Centre orientation sessions are run regularly.
Our Learning Centres have extensive opening hours,
with 24 hour access at the CIT Reid campus.
CIT Accommodation
At CIT, we seek to make the transition into study
as easy as possible by offering comfortable, well-
equipped accommodation close to our campuses.

residences situated in the suburbs of Reid (Monterey
Apartments), Bruce (Campus Residence) and
Macquarie (Bowman House).
The residences are self-catered and provide
comfortable fully-furnished single bedroom
accommodation that includes a phone line; heating;
shared kitchen, bathrooms, laundry and living rooms;
a television; and car parking.
Rooms are allocated on a fair and equal basis to full-
time international and regional students over the age
of 18.
CIT Yurauna Centre
The CIT Yurauna Centre is CIT’s Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander student support centre. It is community-
focussed, welcoming all CIT Indigenous students
into the ‘Yurauna family’ to help them achieve their
educational and personal goals.
Indigenous students will be joining an incredibly
supportive, friendly, encouraging environment – many
students say the CIT Yurauna Centre helped them in
more ways than they thought possible.
The CIT Yurauna Centre regularly organises social
events such as weekly barbeque lunches and guest
speakers, and also organises large-scale events
on-campus such as NAIDOC Week and Reconciliation
Week, showcasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander culture through music, traditional dance,
food and artwork.

Learning Support
Sometimes a bit of support can make all the difference
when you are struggling with your studies, and CIT
offers a range of support services for students.
Drop-in support is available at our Learning Centres,
where teachers can provide help in areas including
research and study skills, preparing oral presentations,
understanding and responding to assignments,
maths, time management and study tips, and using
computers and the internet.
CIT peer tutoring
Peer tutoring can help you achieve success. All peer
tutors are fellow students who have advanced skills in
the area you need help in.
Students receiving peer tutoring contribute a small
amount towards the payment of their tutor and CIT and
CIT’s Student Association (CITSA) pay the remainder.
To sign up for tutoring or to become a peer tutor make
an appointment with the peer tutoring coordinator.
Counselling and Equity
CIT counselling and youth support
CIT students have access to a free and confidential
counselling service. Our counsellors specialise in
helping you enhance your study skills, reduce your
exam anxiety, set goals and deal with any personal
problems which may be affecting your study.
Our counsellors are either registered psychologists or
social workers. Counselling sessions and client files
are confidential, so no information about you, including
the fact you have visited a counsellor, will be released
without your permission.
While our counsellors will try to assist students in
distress, this is not a crisis service and counsellors are
not always immediately available. Bookings are usually
required (for urgent assistance phone Lifeline on
131 114 or the Mental Health ACT Crisis Assessment
and Treatment Team on 1800 629 354).
The CIT Counselling and Equity team includes a
specialist youth advisor who provides advice, support
and referrals for students under 25 years. If you are
experiencing difficulties – whether they are personal or
related to your studies – our youth advisor may be able
to help.
CIT student equity
At CIT we believe that discrimination is not acceptable.
We believe that everyone should be treated fairly,
regardless of their sexuality, age, race, religious or
political beliefs, gender, marital or parental status, or if
they have a disability or are pregnant.
The student equity officer works across CIT on issues
that may arise relating to harassment, bullying,
discrimination or perceived discrimination. The student
equity officer can provide you with free and confidential
advice, information and assistance.
Our student equity officer ensures that both women
and men are fairly represented and supported
in courses, particularly those that involve new
technologies and non-traditional skills.

CIT Disability Support
We aim to provide an environment where students with
disabilities are able to study without disadvantage.
Before enrolling you are encouraged to make an
appointment with one of our disability education
advisors to discuss your goals and any possible
impact on your studies.
We are committed to providing suitable and reasonable
adjustments to support you if you have a disability.
CIT Disability Support can assist you in your studies
with a range of services including pre- and post-
enrolment advice and support. This may include
provision of Auslan/English sign language interpreters,
classroom and assessment support and technological
support to empower your individual learning.
CIT Migrant Support
CIT provides specialist support to mainstream
migrant and refugee students where their learning
needs cannot be met by other CIT courses. We work
with students to design pathways into CIT courses,
provide support for study and exams, deal with issues
or complaints about discrimination and referrals to
community services and agencies.
Our cultural diversity coordinator works with migrant
and refugee students to understand the education and
workplace culture in Australia.
These services are free and confidential to students
studying at CIT.
CIT Yurauna Centre
The CIT Yurauna Centre is CIT’s Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander student support centre, which provides
support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander students studying at CIT. Living by the word
Yurauna, which means ‘to grow,’ the centre provides
students with the support needed to balance life, study
and ambitions for the future.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff can assist
students with study and career advice, enrolment,
financial support, tutorial support, literacy and
numeracy assessments and time management.
Students can also access childcare, counselling,
outreach services and even advice about
accommodation and support services within CIT and
the ACT region.
Our goal is for all CIT students to reach their full
potential and we work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander students to ensure they can accomplish their
study and life goals.
CIT Career Advisors
CIT students have access to dedicated career
advisors. One-on-one appointments are available for
students interested in career information, study options
or pathways to employment. Advisors can provide you
with thorough information about courses and help you
identify your best course of study.
If you have already completed some study, career
advisors can also provide assistance on pathway
options to further study.

further study? Do you want to improve your maths,
English or computing?
CIT’s Access10 course is an alternative Year 10
program for adults. It is an accredited, flexible,
self-paced program, providing a solid base in key
subject areas including English, mathematics,
computing, environment, life in Australia, personal
development and preparing for the future. A number
of elective options are also available.
There are no course fees for this program, however
CIT Student Association fees are applicable and there

ACT Year 12 Certificate
Don’t be one of those people who forever regret not
completing their formal schooling. Once you start
your Year 12 Certificate study with CIT, the sky is the
limit. Move into your career of choice or continue onto
further CIT study.
The Year 12 Certificate is ideal to build your learning
skills and confidence for work and further study.
Choose from three different study options depending
on your needs.
– CIT’s vocational Year 12 Certificate combines
practically-focused English, maths and business
subjects with work qualifications at certificate II
and III levels in areas such as children’s services,
fitness, design, hairdressing, culinary skills,
or automotive
– Our tertiary Year 12 sets you up for future
university study
– The Year 12 Certificate, for adult learners, has a
general education focus.
To study Year 12 at CIT in 2013 you will need to complete
a skills evaluation and come to an enrolment session.
Learning Options
Skills learnt in our Learning Options courses include
reading, writing and maths for work or study,
computing skills, job-seeking strategies, preparation
for work, communication skills, problem solving and
study skills. The courses provide a focus on the needs
of the learner in a relaxed learning environment.
Learning Options can also be adapted to a variety of
different learning contexts.
For example, Learning Options for Women focuses on
preparation for work, building confidence and networks
and updating general skills for the workplace. The
all-important aspects of resume, selection criteria and
interview techniques are also covered, and the course
includes a work placement.

Teacher profile
Trish Rowe
CIT Teacher/coordinator, The
Adult Migrant English Program
“I have taught English as a second
language for 21 years in TAFEs
throughout NSW and ACT. I have
worked across the Language,
Literacy and Numeracy Program
(LLNP), the Adult Migrant English
Program (AMEP), the English
for Employment, Study and Life
program and Learning Options.
This has given me a thorough
understanding of the complexities
of English language teaching and
means I can support CIT’s wide
variety of adult migrant students.
I ensure new AMEP students
at CIT will be placed in the
appropriate class by conducting
interviews. Students can be newly
arrived migrants, skilled workers,
refugees or individuals who
have come to Australia with their
spouses or family.
Interviews are also conducted at
the end of training to ensure each
student is on a path that will help
them reach their goals. This might
be further study, such as the LLNP,
English for Employment and Study
or another CIT program – or they
may have sufficient skills already
and not need further study at all.
I also coordinate and support
CIT’s AMEP teachers to ensure
they are providing the best training
possible to our students and that
they continue to grow.”
Trish Rowe, CIT Teacher
English as a Second Language
Is English your second, third or fourth language?
CIT English as a Second Language courses will improve your skills
in speaking, listening, reading or writing English, from a beginner to
advanced level. Our qualified, experienced teachers will build your
confidence to use English at work, for study or in the community in a
friendly learning environment. Choose to study full-time or part-time, in a
class based on your language level and learning needs. Programs include
the Adult Migrant English Program* (AMEP), the Language Literacy and
Numeracy Program** (LLNP), and English for Employment Study and Life.
*CIT delivers AMEP services on behalf of the Department of Immigration
and Citizenship. The AMEP is an Australian Government program.
**Funded by the Australian Government through the LLNP.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships
ApprenticeshipsandTraineeships
What are apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships combine time at work with training
and can be full-time, part-time or school-based. If
you’re a CIT apprentice or trainee you will receive
high-quality training from teachers who have extensive
industry experience.
Apprenticeships are generally three or four years in
duration and traineeships are generally one to three
years. Once you have completed your apprenticeship
or traineeship CIT will issue you with a nationally
recognised qualification.
What areas does CIT train
apprentices and trainees in?
Australian apprenticeships (this includes traineeships)
are available in many more industries than ever before.
CIT manages off-the-job training in a wide range of
areas including:
– aged care
– allied health
–	automotive
–	bakery
– butchery and cookery
– building and construction
–	business
– carpentry
– children’s services
– community services
– dental assisting
–	electrotechnology
–	engineering
–	hairdressing
–	horticulture
–	hospitality
– information and communication technology
– painting and plastering
–	printing
–	plumbing
– refrigeration and air conditioning
– sheet metal fabrication.
Am I eligible to become an
apprentice or trainee?
To be eligible you must:
– be at least 15 years old
– undertake an Australian apprenticeships qualification
with an approved Registered Training Organisation
– be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or
New Zealand passport holder resident for more
than six months
– be able to undertake a minimum of 15 hours
combined work and training per week (Australian
school-based apprentices must undertake a
minimum of 11 hours and maximum of 20 hours)
– not be a casual employee or self-employed
(sub-contractor).
Get straight into the workforce and gain skills on
the job with an apprenticeship or traineeship.
Australian School-Based
Apprenticeships
Get your future career underway with an Australian
School-Based Apprenticeship (ASBA). If you are
a secondary student aged 15 years or over, a CIT
ASBA means you can start an apprenticeship and
get paid while you train. You then finish college with
both a Year 12 Certificate and a great qualification.

Recognition of Prior Learning
RecognitionofPriorLearning
What is skills recognition?
You can make your work and life experience, including
previous formal training, count through our skills
recognition program. Skills recognition is an efficient
way of helping you to achieve your career or study
goals, as you do not have to study something you
have already learnt.
Recognising your work
and life experience
As you travel through life, you gather a variety of
skills and a vast amount of knowledge which can be

as a bus mechanic. When I arrived in Canberra
I got a job at Toyota in Mitchell, and the training
manager helped me apply for CIT’s trade skills
recognition process.
I attached the certificates I received while working
in the Philippines, and I was very pleased to have
my skills recognised in Australia. I completed my
Certificate III in Automotive Technology at CIT

a qualified technician and my qualifications are
recognised by the industry.
Right now I am working as a technician for Toyota,

“I am a proud North Queensland Aboriginal. My father
is of the Nargun/Gugu Badun people and my mother
from the Mittakodia people.
I had a poor view of education and what it could
bring. It was not that I did not want to learn, rather the
opportunity had never been there for me. Thankfully,
I found the CIT Yurauna Centre. And it found me.
Looking back, the Yurauna Centre and I have
grown together.
When I came to enrol, the centre had just opened
and was offering only one course – Year 10. After
completing this course and gaining my Year 10
Certificate, I went on to produce five of my favourite
artworks – my children. After having my children I
decided to return to CIT Yurauna as a mature aged
student. This decision to return to study was the
beginning of many decisions to shape my life as an
artist, mother and proud Aboriginal woman.
I recently completed my Certificate III in Cultural Arts
and have now started a certificate IV.
CIT Yurauna has allowed me to tell my story through
cultural arts. Studying arts at CIT meant my hobby,
which I did almost every day, developed into
something so much more.
Since studying at CIT Yurauna, I became involved
in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Women’s Gathering on a local level, and was then
voted to represent the Aboriginal women’s gathering
at a national level.

This position has built my confidence, and allowed me
to speak on what is happening in my community.
I feel my greatest leadership role has been with my
children. I have shown them a world where there are
opportunities, and they understand the value
of education.
During 2010 Reconciliation Week I enjoyed working
at the Australian National Museum and speaking about
cultural art and the stories behind the artwork. From
this, I saw how Aboriginal arts can be used in all forms
of art medium and my own art works have a holistic
meaning about being Aboriginal.
Teaching others about art has recently included
presenting at St Clare’s College in Narrabundah
on fabric design, and then becoming a CIT Yurauna
Centre teacher.
Art has allowed me to communicate my story, the story
of who I am and where I have came from. I use my art
to communicate to a wider audience. You can achieve
much with a CIT Yurauna education.”

Cade Brown, Director
“PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (PwC) relationship with CIT
started when we were Walter Turnbull. Initially CIT was one
of our clients, but that soon evolved into much more.
We have employed a number of CIT graduates over
the past couple of years, and every one of them
has made a positive contribution to both the firm
and our culture. CIT graduates have an aptitude for
the profession, and a CIT qualification in business
provides an excellent foundation for a career, or as a
bridge to a university degree.
I am really proud of the longstanding relationship we
have with CIT. Many of the graduates eventually ended
up with Chartered Accountant or Certified Practising
Accountant qualifications (CPA Australia). We actively
support further study of this kind.
CIT has a strong reputation for producing business
graduates with both the skills and knowledge required
to make them valuable members of any organisation
– big or small. As well as learning the important
theoretical aspects to accounting and business
administration, they have strong communication
and team-working skills.”

“I moved to Canberra from Sydney so I
could study music at CIT – I moved for
personal reasons as well as specifically to
study at CIT as there was no other course
with such good opportunities in Sydney.
As part of my Diploma of Music I compiled
an EP containing five original songs,
with the help of the technical students

excellent studio facilities meant I could put
the entire EP together. The EP is called
Lessons Learnt and it’s a showcase of
what I can do.
I found CIT offered a lot more support
than other places I have studied. The
teachers offer a lot of knowledge and
support in all areas. On the social side,
I have been able to network with other
musicians, and have performed at venues
around Canberra such as the Phoenix Pub
and schools.
I am now enrolled in my advanced diploma
at CIT, and am also working as a singing
teacher for a local performance school.
In a few years I would like to be teaching

I would encourage other music students to
consider CIT, as it has a very encouraging

CIT Graduate, Fashion
“One of the great things about studying at CIT for me
has been the emphasis on sustainable design. We are
encouraged to explore the possibilities of sustainable
design including contemporary pattern making
methods, connections to garments and material use.
I am creating garments that are sustainable through
the process in which they are made. Starting with a
concept and interpreting this into a zero waste pattern
making method.
I have also looked at sourcing fabrics from Australia,
and fabrics that are more sustainable such as wool
and bamboo.
A zero waste philosophy, Selvedge to Selvedge pattern
making system has been developed by myself and
development worlds. Explore the many opportunities
available to you as you get to know the industry –
you could start your own fashion label or join an
established label, be part of the clothing production
industry, or even work in clothing sales. Even fashion
media is an option for CIT fashion graduates.
Commercial photographer, photographic
illustrator, digital image creator,
photo imaging assistant
Photographic career opportunities are broad,
and can include running your own freelance
photography business (think corporate, commercial,
events, product, fashion, wedding, portrait or studio
photography). Photography at CIT could also lead
to teaching, a career as a photo journalist or into the
retail side of imaging or a photo lab.
Alice Sutton, CIT Graduate
designer Amy Taylor. This system stops fabric being
wasted in the pattern making process. This creates a
more sustainable method for production.
I have been looking at how you can create connections
to garments to represent a new direction for Australian
fashion, with garments that are made in Australia with
quality materials. The skilled teachers have made
CIT a great learning platform for me to launch into
the industry.”

Group ACT Australian Apprentice

“I’m a 21-year-old metal fabricator
who chose to take on an
apprenticeship and CIT’s Certificate
III in Engineering Fabrication
Trades course after finishing high
school, turning down a place at the
University of Canberra. I have never
looked back.
My apprenticeship with Still
Standing Sheet Metal was fast-
tracked and I was able to complete
a four-year apprenticeship in three
years. This was possible because I
could learn and use skills in both the
classroom and workplace, at a rapid
rate. I loved learning new skills off
the job at CIT and then being able
to take these skills back to work the
next day and put them into practice.
This to me is a very logical and
efficient way to learn new skills. You
are reinforcing them – at CIT and at
work straight away.
Having finished my apprenticeship
I am now in a more senior position
within the business and enjoy working
as part of a team of fabricators that
consists of one first-year apprentice,
two fourth-year apprentices and me.
This has presented me with lots of
opportunities to develop my team
and leadership skills and I have really
enjoyed mentoring other apprentices
and passing on my skills.
I was partially educated on-the-job
by a tradesman who had spent 50
years working with sheet metal.
I was extremely fortunate that he
taught me old fashioned sheet
metal techniques. As a result I was
able to impress my employer in the
early years of my apprenticeship by
grasping the old fashioned sheet
metal skills I was learning on the
job and mixing that with what I was
learning in the modern education
system at CIT. I was able to fabricate
jobs more efficiently in both material
usage and time.
I am looking forward to continuing
to develop these skills and build
my experience in the industry with
the hope of running my own metal
fabrication business someday.”

Graduate Development Expertise
CIT Solutions recently worked with a high profile
government agency to redevelop their Graduate
Entry Program, to achieve a work-based
learning and assessment system that ensured
all graduates completed a structured and
relevant program of induction in their first year.
The program’s objective was to provide a
comprehensive introduction to all corporate
systems over the course of one year.
A combination of off-the-job learning, work-
based projects and structured work experience
was logged by team leaders who also completed
most of the formative assessment.
The learning program was mapped to the
Certificate IV in Government to provide a formal
qualification in government service to graduates
who completed the program.

To sign up for tutoring or to become a peer tutor make an appointment with the peer tutoring coordinator. Counselling and Equity CIT counselling and youth support CIT students have access to a free and confidential counselling service. Our counsellors specialise in helping you enhance your study skills, reduce your exam anxiety, set goals and deal with any personal problems which may be affecting your study. Our counsellors are either registered psychologists or social workers. Counselling sessions and client files are confidential, so no information about you, including the fact you have visited a counsellor, will be released without your permission. While our counsellors will try to assist students in distress, this is not a crisis service and counsellors are not always immediately available. Bookings are usually required (for urgent assistance phone Lifeline on 131 114 or the Mental Health ACT Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team on 1800 629 354). The CIT Counselling and Equity team includes a specialist youth advisor who provides advice, support and referrals for students under 25 years. If you are experiencing difficulties – whether they are personal or related to your studies – our youth advisor may be able to help. CIT student equity At CIT we believe that discrimination is not acceptable. We believe that everyone should be treated fairly, regardless of their sexuality, age, race, religious or political beliefs, gender, marital or parental status, or if they have a disability or are pregnant. The student equity officer works across CIT on issues that may arise relating to harassment, bullying, discrimination or perceived discrimination. The student equity officer can provide you with free and confidential advice, information and assistance. Our student equity officer ensures that both women and men are fairly represented and supported in courses, particularly those that involve new technologies and non-traditional skills. I have worked across the Language, Literacy and Numeracy Program (LLNP), the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP), the English for Employment, Study and Life program and Learning Options. This has given me a thorough understanding of the complexities of English language teaching and means I can support CIT’s wide variety of adult migrant students. I ensure new AMEP students at CIT will be placed in the appropriate class by conducting interviews. Students can be newly arrived migrants, skilled workers, refugees or individuals who have come to Australia with their spouses or family. Interviews are also conducted at the end of training to ensure each student is on a path that will help them reach their goals. This might be further study, such as the LLNP, English for Employment and Study or another CIT program – or they may have sufficient skills already and not need further study at all. I also coordinate and support CIT’s AMEP teachers to ensure they are providing the best training possible to our students and that they continue to grow.” Trish Rowe, CIT Teacher English as a Second Language Is English your second, third or fourth language? My father is of the Nargun/Gugu Badun people and my mother from the Mittakodia people. I had a poor view of education and what it could bring. It was not that I did not want to learn, rather the opportunity had never been there for me. Thankfully, I found the CIT Yurauna Centre. And it found me. Looking back, the Yurauna Centre and I have grown together. When I came to enrol, the centre had just opened and was offering only one course – Year 10. After completing this course and gaining my Year 10 Certificate, I went on to produce five of my favourite artworks – my children. After having my children I decided to return to CIT Yurauna as a mature aged student. This decision to return to study was the beginning of many decisions to shape my life as an artist, mother and proud Aboriginal woman. I recently completed my Certificate III in Cultural Arts and have now started a certificate IV. CIT Yurauna has allowed me to tell my story through cultural arts. Studying arts at CIT meant my hobby, which I did almost every day, developed into something so much more. Since studying at CIT Yurauna, I became involved in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Gathering on a local level, and was then voted to represent the Aboriginal women’s gathering at a national level. During 2010 Reconciliation Week I enjoyed working at the Australian National Museum and speaking about cultural art and the stories behind the artwork. From this, I saw how Aboriginal arts can be used in all forms of art medium and my own art works have a holistic meaning about being Aboriginal. Teaching others about art has recently included presenting at St Clare’s College in Narrabundah on fabric design, and then becoming a CIT Yurauna Centre teacher. • 40. 40 Canberra Institute of Technology Workplace Online Campus | cit.edu.au Design,FashionandPhotography Student profile Alice Sutton CIT Graduate, Fashion “One of the great things about studying at CIT for me has been the emphasis on sustainable design. We are encouraged to explore the possibilities of sustainable design including contemporary pattern making methods, connections to garments and material use. I am creating garments that are sustainable through the process in which they are made. Starting with a concept and interpreting this into a zero waste pattern making method. I have also looked at sourcing fabrics from Australia, and fabrics that are more sustainable such as wool and bamboo. A zero waste philosophy, Selvedge to Selvedge pattern making system has been developed by myself and development worlds. Explore the many opportunities available to you as you get to know the industry – you could start your own fashion label or join an established label, be part of the clothing production industry, or even work in clothing sales. Even fashion media is an option for CIT fashion graduates. Commercial photographer, photographic illustrator, digital image creator, photo imaging assistant Photographic career opportunities are broad, and can include running your own freelance photography business (think corporate, commercial, events, product, fashion, wedding, portrait or studio photography). Photography at CIT could also lead to teaching, a career as a photo journalist or into the retail side of imaging or a photo lab. Alice Sutton, CIT Graduate designer Amy Taylor. This system stops fabric being wasted in the pattern making process. This creates a more sustainable method for production. I have been looking at how you can create connections to garments to represent a new direction for Australian fashion, with garments that are made in Australia with quality materials. The skilled teachers have made CIT a great learning platform for me to launch into the industry.” CIT Momentum 2011 Design, Fashion and Photography

I have never looked back. My apprenticeship with Still Standing Sheet Metal was fast- tracked and I was able to complete a four-year apprenticeship in three years. This was possible because I could learn and use skills in both the classroom and workplace, at a rapid rate. I loved learning new skills off the job at CIT and then being able to take these skills back to work the next day and put them into practice. This to me is a very logical and efficient way to learn new skills. You are reinforcing them – at CIT and at work straight away. Having finished my apprenticeship I am now in a more senior position within the business and enjoy working as part of a team of fabricators that consists of one first-year apprentice, two fourth-year apprentices and me. This has presented me with lots of opportunities to develop my team and leadership skills and I have really enjoyed mentoring other apprentices and passing on my skills. I was partially educated on-the-job by a tradesman who had spent 50 years working with sheet metal. I was extremely fortunate that he taught me old fashioned sheet metal techniques. As a result I was able to impress my employer in the early years of my apprenticeship by grasping the old fashioned sheet metal skills I was learning on the job and mixing that with what I was learning in the modern education system at CIT. I was able to fabricate jobs more efficiently in both material usage and time. I am looking forward to continuing to develop these skills and build my experience in the industry with the hope of running my own metal fabrication business someday.”
