About access to Discovery &
Databases
• Hawthorn English students do not have a University
email account or password.
• These are required for you to access Discovery and
databases from outside of a University of
Melbourne Library.
But there is good news…
About access to Discovery &
Databases
You are welcome at the University of Melbourne library
branches, where you can use the no login required
guest access computers.
Use the guest access computers to search online for:
• Journal articles
• Reports
• Newspaper articles
The library catalogue
• You do not need to login to use the Library
catalogue to search for books.
• The Library catalogue is available to use from
anywhere with access to a computer.
• There are computers in all libraries that allow for
guest access to the University of Melbourne
Library catalogue, as Hawthorn students you can
use these computers to access the library
catalogue.
Access to
online journal articles
• The guest computers in the library offer access to
online journal articles.
• Enter your keywords into the Discovery search box
and click on the search button.
Access to
online journal articles
• As Hawthorn students, you do not have full access to
all the resources in Discovery.
• However, if there is a PDF icon located with the title
of a journal article, click it to open to the full text of
the article.
Wireless access
• There is no wireless network in the University
of Melbourne library for guests.
Search Tips
Function Example
Use quotation marks for
exact phrases.
“global warming”
Use wildcard symbols are
useful for alternative
spelling.
Use ? to match a single
character
globali?ation will match:
globalisation and
globalization
Use # to match one or no
character
colo#r will match:
color and
colour
Use * to match different
word endings
communicat* will match:
communicating
communication
