2. JUST WORDS…
FROM THE EDITOR
Sheldon Baker
The major reasons for growth have been the increasing prevalence of lifestyle diseases and
people consciously taking preventive healthcare measures. Developed markets, like the U.S
and Europe, have discovered the untapped segment of customized products based on health
claims. And functional food is the largest growth category followed by functional beverages and dietary supplements.
The global nutraceuticals market is expected to witness continued growth. Growth areas include food ingredients that provide
medical or health benefits that may prevent disease as well as boosting the overall immune system. The flexibility in storage
options, the demand for combined formulations with multiple benefits, increased consumer education levels, informed consumers,
and the rise in health concerns among connected consumers are expected to fuel the demand for the market during the forecast
period. Thus, the global nutraceuticals industry is expected to finally secure its rightful place in global healthcare and medical
space.
The trends that I envision to keep the industry moving over the next 12 months include:
• A continued rise in chronic and non-communicable diseases
• Rising healthcare costs
• Baby boomers seeking a healthier path towards retirement
• A mistrust in conventional medicine
• A growing demand for convenience
Furthermore, the pandemic was also a foundation stone of the start of the end of substandard nutrition, invalid claims, and smart
marketing claims phrases that potentially misled consumers. For instance, in India, ICMR and FSSAI have now been on
non-negotiable terms with claims and are demanding clinical validation of the products. ICMR has rolled out a large clinical study
on Ayush ingredient for immunity, which has been tested on over 10,000 police personnel.
The nutraceutical industry’s growth module has also been sparked by the aging global population and rising healthcare costs.
Manufacturers, distributors, and wholesalers in the nutraceutical industry should understand the drivers of nutraceutical industry
growth if they want to continue to thrive.
With healthy regards,
SHELDON BAKER
Editor-in-Chief

Personal health continues to be front of mind for the public as Covid-19 continues to show its
ugly face worldwide. As a result, although unfortunately, it continues to help position the
nutraceuticals industry for further expansion and success over the next 18 months and
beyond.
Globally, nutraceuticals are becoming more important as they become part of consumers’
daily diet. In 2020, the global market for nutraceuticals was worth about US$233.9 billion and
is projected to reach US$358.5 billion by 2027. After North America, Japan and China are the
next largest nutraceuticals consumers. Together, they make up about 78% of the total market
in the Asia Pacific region.
3. Power of Fungi and
health benefits of Beta
glucans; gains
significance
during Covid-19
Samuel JK Abraham
Yamanashi University
Faculty of Medicine and
GN Corporation, Japan
At times when every walk of life has been affected
in some way or other due to Covid-19, and the
whole world is psychologically preparing to face
LIFE 2.0, our research which focused on lifestyle
issues including metabolic syndrome and NASH,
took a dive into finer details of those findings. With
COVID-19 related immunological implications in
mind, it opened our eyes to several hidden
potentials of a fungus, the Black yeast
Aureobasidium Pullulans produced Beta 1,3-1,6
Glucans with capabilities to control cytokine storm
and coagulopathy in Covid-19 patients. Puzzled
at those breakthrough findings, we revisited the
history of how
these
developments
had evolved since
the early 1980s in
Japan, to yield a
safe and
pluri-potent food
supplement.
Evolution inspired, Professor Noboru Fujii, was
surprised to learn about the poly-extremotolerant
characteristics of the fungi Aureobasidium
Pullulans which produces an exo-polysaccharide
coating around it. Thus, he explored in-depth.
Further understanding of the phylogeny made
him connect the fact that the fungi have been
placed between the animal and plant kingdom in
the evolutionary tree of life and that the most
powerful tool in the fight against infectious
diseases being the discovery of the antibiotic
penicillin was also from a fungus. After several
basic studies, he inferred that the
poly-extremotolerant capability of this fungi
should be able to deliver something worthy to the
modern-day society with multifaceted stress. As a
result, the direction of his fungi research then
diversified into chemical characterization.
Nature gifted us with several strains of the black
yeast Aureobasidium Pullulans in and around the
region of Kochi, one of the southern most places
4. in Japan,on the island of Shikoku. with its fertile
soil, especially around the banks of Nyodo river.
Despite initial hurdles in reproducing the in vitro
culture , a passionate team of scientists from both
academic and industry backgrounds, after years
of hard work, were able to accomplish a
scaling-up of a laboratory fungi to an industrial
scale. This was in part to the pristine waters of
the Nyodo river. In 1996, a food grade Beta
1,3-1,6 Glucan production was accomplished,
and it received approval as a food additive after
clearing all safety tests according to Japanese
standards.
Science equipped the team of Sophy and GNC
with bioreactors and excellent authentication
systems, including the method of validating and
quantifying the Beta Glucan content in the fungi,,
was granted a patent. As processing
methodologies evolved, fine-tuned and the
AFO-202 strain was produced, this water-soluble
Beta Glucan could be incorporated as an additive
into food substances as well as a value addition.
Then our research moved to isolate, characterize
and culture other strains of the Aureobasidium
Pullulans which now has yielded yet another
unique strain N-163, whose produced in gel form
was introduced into the Japanese market in 2018,
the same year the manufacturing facility was
certified with GMP.
Pre-clinical studies in targeted animal models,
followed by clinical validation in both healthy
volunteers and people with specific illnesses have
revealed that the AFO-202 strain produced
Beta-1,3-1,6 Glucans have health benefits such
as (i) Balancing Glucotoxicity, (ii) Immune
enhancement, (iii) Modestly balancing lipotoxicity,
whereas the N-163 produce has properties of (i)
Modulating immunity, (ii) Antifibrotic effect, and
(iii) Anti-inflammatory effect based on the
following studies listed below:
A study in healthy middle-aged men in
Japan revealed that the AFO-202 beta glucan
enhanced immunity beside control of
coagulopathy evident by decrease in D-dimer
levels. N-163 beta glucan decreased LDL
cholesterol and anti-inflammatory markers
CD11b, ferritin, galectin-3, fibrinogen [1].
Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis animal model
study revealed that liver inflammation
associated hepatic cell ballooning and
steatosis was reduced significantly by
AFO-202 Beta Glucan while liver fibrosis and
inflammation was reduced by N-163 beta
glucan [2].
In children with autism spectrum disorder
AFO-202 beta glucan improved the
behavioral and sleep pattern along with
enhancement of neurotransmitter
alpha-synuclein and melatonin [3,4].
In Covid-19 patients, significant control of
cytokine storm associated factors such as IL6,
coagulopathy marker D-Dimer reported in
clinical study with AFO-202 & N-163
combination [5].
Future direction will be to take cues from gut
microbiota to see i the association of the
above results would be linked to possible
mechanisms and then to evaluate the effects
of these Beta Glucans not only in immunity
but in neuroinflammation, markers of aging
and senolysis. Being safe food supplements
with a track record of more than two decades,
further studies will help unravel the benefits of
Nichi Glucan products especially to the
vulnerable population with co-morbidities as
we keep exploring the potentials of newer
strains for specific health conditions.

7. With more than 20 years of experience in
building new companies through mergers and
acquisitions, Nechustan brings strong leadership
and strategic skills to her role as chief executive officer
of InnovoPro. She has applied her experience in various
management roles to implement innovative strategies while
working in the global corporate sector across industries including
food, communications, and renewable energies. She holds a BA
in economics and an MBA, both from Tel Aviv University.
Nutrify Today (NT): InnovoPro pioneered chickpea protein for food applications. What
led to this discovery?
Ms. Nechushtan: InnovoPro’s chickpea protein is a result of consumers craving an all-in-one
solution to a protein replacement. InnovoPro believes that an all-in-one solution should
prioritize neutral taste, clean label and safety, high nutritional value, high functionality, and
sustainability. These are the five pillars that innovative chickpea was built on.
NT: Dr. Ascher Shmulewitz, InnovoPro founder, is the person behind chickpea for food
formulations. What research helped him launch this food ingredient?
Ms. Nechushtan: Dr. Ascher Shmulewitz is a doctor and engineer who was determined to find
a sustainable way to extract the protein found in chickpeas and use it for other purposes. To
do this, he used water instead of organic solvents, which results in less energy used than
other processes. InnovoPro has developed proprietary technology that enables the extraction
of 70% protein concentrate from chickpeas, a non-GMO, sustainable and healthy ingredient
for the creation of clean label applications. Our technology is natural, and water based and
does not use any organic solvents to aid in the extraction process making our technology, just
like the chickpea, sustainable.
An Interview With…
Taly Nechushtan
Chief Executive Officer
at InnovoPro By Sheldon Baker
8. NT: What applications can chickpea protein be applied to in addition to vegan food
products?
Ms. Nechushtan: Chickpea protein can be used in spreads and dressings, beverages, energy
bars, meat replacements, ice cream, and non-dairy products. It is also excellent for baking
airy, gluten-free treats as it forms a foam that remains functional in both cold and warm
methods of preparation.
NT: Please explain InnovoPro's role in food technology, in which Israel is a leader.
Ms. Nechushtan: Before InnovoPro, the market was limited to soy and pea protein, which
many consumers cannot enjoy due to allergies and taste preferences. The addition of
chickpea protein to this new meat alternative category solves the disadvantages of many
other protein alternatives as it is not an allergen, it is much more functional, and it tastes
better.
NT: InnovoPro has received numerous accolades. What's the attraction?
Ms. Nechushtan: InnovoPro stays on top of trends within the food industry and listens closely
to what consumers want and need. Most recently, there has been a noticeable uptick in
people wanting to eat less meat, dairy, and gluten, avoid GMO and soy products, and eat
healthier while still consuming protein. There is also an increase in the flexitarian diet, which
is one that is centered on plant foods with the occasional inclusion of meat. InnovoPro’s
innovations in food technology are catering to the needs of those flexitarians.
NT: In what product areas, in addition to the first-ever texturized vegetable protein, do
you envision company growth to take place?
Ms. Nechushtan: Following our great success with dairy alternatives the past four years, we
see entering the category of plant-based protein alternatives as a huge and exciting step for
InnovoPro. We plan to conquer the meat category of this sector and have already developed
burgers and chicken nuggets made from our protein that taste and have the same
consistency as the real deal.
NT: What does the road map to global expansion look like?
Ms. Nechushtan: There have been several strong launches of our product in Europe, such as
the collaboration with Switzerland’s largest retail company, Migros, to bring dairy-free
chickpea yogurts to consumers in 2020. Now, InnovoPro is looking to expand to the American
market, focusing on scaling up while still maintaining our core value of innovation.

11. Nutraceuticals:
GLOBAL
NUTRACEUTICAL
GROWTH
Since Dr Stephen DeFelice coined the term “Nutraceutical” from “Nutrition” and
“Pharmaceutical” in 1989, it was used to describe medicinally or nutritionally functional foods.
Progressively, nutraceuticals, have also been called as medical/designer foods, phytochemicals,
functional foods and nutritional supplements. These include everyday products as “bio” yogurts,
and fortified breakfast cereals, as well as vitamins, herbal remedies and recently developed
genetically modified foods and supplements. These nutraceuticals have received considerable
interest due to potential nutritional, safety and therapeutic effects.
The incidence of the COVID-19 pandemic has created a paradigm shift in the nutraceutical
industry. Nutraceuticals that were thought of as an elite platter of consumables, have now
become the essential need for many people to enhance their immunity – a sensitive and
important feature resorted to during the pandemic.
The global nutraceuticals market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7.5% during the next five
years (2020 - 2025). The global dietary supplements market size which was valued at USD
$140.3 billion in 2020, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.6%. Further, the sales of dietary
supplements that were USD $48 billion in 2019, grew to USD $52 billion in 2020, and are
reported to reach USD $58 billion this year. Among these increased sales, there are specific
product categories with particularly reported promising sales trends. This includes collagen
peptides, immune supplements, and stress supplements.

Nutrify Today
A nutraceutical product can be defined as a substance,
which has a physiological benefit, or which provides
protection against chronic disease. It is used to enhance
health, and may prevent chronic diseases, delay the
aging process, increase life expectancy, and support the
structure or function of the body. In addition tonutrition,
these products are often used as medicine. A
nutraceutical or bioceutical is an alternative to
pharmaceuticals which claims physiological benefits. It
is considered that there is a difference between two
functional foods and nutraceuticals. Functional foods
resemble food and are modified for greater nutritional
value. Dietary supplements sometimes resemble
pharmaceuticals and are made from food, food-like
substances, or nutrients to improve health.
Nutraceuticals, also referred to as dietary supplements,
are made to help improve health. Some dietary
supplements may help improve overall health and may
help manage some health conditions without causing
side effects
• Calcium and vitamin D may help strengthening bones.
• Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils may help people with
heart disease.
• Folic acid may decrease the risk of anemia.
NUTRACEUTICALS -
A Need for
Product Safety
Nutraceuticals contain active ingredients that
can have strong effects in the body when
consumed in higher doses than suggested,
and the requirement might vary with each
individual. Supplement and pharmaceutical
interaction might also lead to an occurrence of
health problems.
Most commonly used nutraceuticals are
compounds derived from certain plants, fruits,
and vegetables.They contain antioxidant and
anti-inflammatory properties which suggest
providing protection against both acute and
chronic diseases such as cardiovascular
disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and
some severe inflammatory conditions.The most
widely consumed nutraceuticals include
anthocyanins from berries, flavanols from
chocolate, polyphenol compounds from
grapes, catechins from tea, isoflavones from
soy and metabolites from EGCG
(Epigallocatechin gallate).
17. Flavonoids are plant derived components that have potent biological properties but according
to research, flavonoids tend to act as mutagens that generate free radicals and show properties
of inhibiting enzymes involved in hormone metabolism. Excessive dosage of flavonoids also
may harm an unborn child in pregnant women as they possess characteristics of crossing the
placenta.
High doses of certain polyphenols may cause kidney damage in mice and may also lead to
tumor development as per scientific literatureon the safety of polyphenols.Alteration in thyroid
production and absorption of certain nutrients are affected when polyphenols are consumed
at higher doses.Research also shows that polyphenols found in grapefruit are known to interact
with multiple medications.
Green tea catechin doses at or above 800mg/day may pose health concerns. Side effects like
dizziness, kidney failure, low blood sugar and anemia are side effects that can be associated
with the most abundant catechin in green tea is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).Astaxanthin,
a carotenoid at higher doses, has shown some side effects of increased bowel movements and
stomach pain.
Studies have shown that long term exposure to genistein, a soy derived isoflavone, resulted in
development of breast cancer, adverse effects on the developing female reproductive tract,
and negative effects on long term development of infants.
High dosage of isoflavones of four to eight milligrams per kilogram also might also lead to the
ankle inflammation, abdominal tenderness, and abnormal tissue growth in the uterus.
Accidental intake of supplements with DMAA, have been known to cause relatively
mild-adverse effects such as tachycardia, nausea, and vomiting mainly in children.
Nevertheless, there are several supplement products which are available that contain active
ingredients which can have beneficial effects. Still, some may increase the risk of bleeding or, if
taken before surgery, alter the response to anesthesia.
With nutraceuticals now shifting towards adjunct therapy from simple supplements, it is
important for consumers to understand that the intake of such nutraceuticals without the
recommendation of a medical advisor (health professional) or dietician, might lead to relatively
mild-adverse side effects.
Designing of the Nutra vigilance system is important to monitor the safety of authorized food
supplements and to detect any change to their risk benefit balance. It is a needed precaution
for the future of product safety.
According to several researchers, the most
widely used nutraceutical compounds have
properties that may treat and prevent several
disorders in humans but also there is data
which suggests some of these compounds
can be toxic when consumed at higher
doses.Of course,these are considered claims
and cannot be stated as such in the U.S.
nutraceutical marketplace.
It is a needed precaution for the future of product safety.
