Home Away from Home
College students make themselves at home, as they enjoy an evening of leisure
after a long day of studying and attending lectures. The last person they want to see
is a parent walking around, and I am old enough to be their parent, so their faces
dropped as I happily approached the students to ask if they minded being the
subject of my photographs for this project.
After I explained my intent, they were more than happy to oblige. I proceeded
to float around the U/C Lounge at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, and
noticed some students intently involved in their studies whilst flashing me mild
sideway scowls as if to say, “look, nothing personal Mom’s, but don’t come over
here!” I took the hint and left them alone. On my way to the pool lounge, there were
two students engrossed in conversation. I asked them if they minded, and with shy
gestures, they told me go ahead. Still making my way to the pool lounge, I stopped
at the noisiest corner of the lounge to greet students tending to a mixture of
leisurely activities. Some students were yelling protests at their video games, and
some were holding conversations about homework. Finally arriving at the pool
lounge, after asking permission to take some photos, I stopped at a student
concentrating on a shot at the pool table.
2. As an employee of College World Magazine, your editor has assigned you to write a
feature story about what students do for recreation and entertainment outside of
their academic lives. You may not create the images or article about your own
personal hobbies or interests – it must either be about an individual or group other
than yourself; or it must have a bigger overall theme about entertainment and
recreation for college students.
You should submit three ‘choice’ photos to supplement the short story you are
writing for this topic. Edit them as necessary (for color, contrast, shape, etc.), then
post them to Slideshare. Remember to include variety in your shots. Unless you
have a compelling reason, all three of your shots should not be long shots (LS).
Write a one page, double spaced article about your story. Describe the major
players, what happened, why it matters, what was interesting or fun, etc. You will
turn in a hard copy of the article in class on the due date.
