What is Debate?<br />Different kinds<br />Policy is what we (Kansas) practice in the Fall<br />We follow all KSHSAA, NFL and NCFL policies<br />Resolution<br />Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its exploration and/or development of space beyond the Earth’s mesosphere.<br />
  5. 5. Who is debate for?<br />Everyone!<br />Learn lots of skills for the “real world”<br />Get to meet a lot of people<br />Anyone who likes to have fun!<br />

How is your student getting ready?<br />In class:<br />Beginning Students (1st Year)<br />Advanced Students (2nd Year and above)<br />Supplies (attached to your handout)<br />At Work Nights:<br />Time to work with other students<br />Time to do more research (NO, you cannot use Wikipedia!)<br />Time to do practice debate and get feedback<br />Attendance is highly encouraged!<br />At Home:<br />Research<br />Talk to your student about it!<br />

What is this ultimately for?<br />Weekend Tournaments!<br />Every week will have a “trip sheet” for each upcoming weekend tournament<br />Can be Fri-Sat or Sat only<br />Friday registration is 3pm<br />Saturday registration is 7:30am<br />Each team will debate a minimum of 5 rounds<br />More rounds if the qualify for semi-finals<br />Unfortunately, it isn’t a spectator sport<br />

Weekend Tournaments, con’d.<br />Dress Code (attached to your handout)<br />Getting to the Tournament<br />Transportation<br />In-district = student provides own transportation<br />Out-of-district = school provides transportation<br />Exceptions = Near-by schools, like Blue Valley North<br />Out-of-Town = Parent must drive the student if they are not able to ride with the team. Students are NOT allowed to drive themselves to an out-of-town tournament<br />
  9. 9. Weekend Tournaments, con’d<br />Make sure your debater eats breakfast!<br />Lunch may or may not be available on site.<br />Generally, there is not enough time to go to lunch off campus. <br />Students can bring money for pizza or bring their own lunch.<br />

Weekend Tournaments, con’d<br />When are they finally done?<br />Usually about 4pm-5pm<br />Are there meets on any other days of the week?<br />For debate, tournaments will always be Fri-Sat or Sat only.<br />How many do students have to go to?<br />Beginning – 2 per semester<br />Advanced – 3 per semester<br />Honors – 4 per semester<br />KSHSAA allows 8 max, not including State or Nationals<br />

Why does my student keep asking me about October 15th?<br />Shawnee Mission South Home Tournament<br />Instead of us going to a school to compete, we will host our own and run the tournament.<br />South students won’t compete; instead they will be in charge of hosting.<br />This is a major portion of your student’s grade!<br />Judge recruitment (prior to Oct 15th)<br />Tournament organization and preparation (prior to Oct 15th)<br />Being physically there on October 15th to run the tournament<br />
  12. 12. Home Tournament, con’d<br />My student cannot be there on October 15th.<br />If you haven’t already, please let Mrs. Ashley know ASAP. <br />There is no school on Friday, October 14th. Come help Mrs. Ashley and the NFL Officers!<br />Other factors of the grade (judges, preparation) will be priority for those who cannot be there on Oct. 15th.<br />

After all of this hard work, how will my student be graded?<br />Weekend tournament participation<br />Home tournament assistance<br />Turning in work in class<br />Practice Debates in class<br />Work night attendance<br />Beginning – end of year portfolio<br />Advanced/Honors – Completion of grade sheet and final<br />
  14. 14. How can my student Letter in Debate?<br />Still in progress…<br />After competing in their first tournament, your student will join the National Forensics League<br />Will need to do much more than the minimum<br />
  15. 15. Banquet<br />Debate and Forensics Banquet is held together<br />May 8th, 2012<br />Here at South in the Cafeteria<br />Everything else is TBD<br />

Shameless Plug for Forensics<br />When debate is over, how can your student keep their mind sharp for next season AND still have fun?<br />FORENSICS!<br />Instead of debating in one style on the same topic, there are 10-12 events to choose from:<br />Poetry Prose Original Oration Informative Speech<br />Extemporaneous Speaking Humorous Interpretation<br />Dramatic Interpretation Lincoln-Douglas Debate <br />Public Forum Debate Congress<br />
