4. The floodwaters receded after five hours. Azreen left Nek’s house when it was near dusk. When she reached home, she

which the Old Lady had given her. During dinner, there was a calm amiable silence between Azreen and her father.
Azreen was reading at midnight when there was a flurry of knocks on the front door. It was Siti. She came to inform
Azreen that Nek passed away an hour ago and Mohd Asraf and a few men were on their way to the Old Lady’s house to take
revenge. Mohd Asraf was convinced by the neighbours that the Old lady had deliberately poisoned Nek. Upon hearing that,
Azreen grabbed her slippers and ran to the Old lady’s house. While running, she kept tripping over the roots and rocks.
At the Old Lady’s house, she saw seven men who dared not moved closer to the house but stood at the edge of the
garden. They were prevented to move closer because of superstition and fear of the supernatural. Mohd Asraf was closer to the
house and was holding a torch and a hoe. He raised the hoe and whacked the door once. Azreen pushed him aside and stood in
front of the broken door to stop him. Mohd Asraf ignored her and pushed her once again before he whacked the door open with
the hoe.
Azreen took a spade and stabbed Mohd Asraf’s foot. In pain he dropped the hoe but the fallen torch rolled towards the
house wall and burnt the wooden wall. The fire spread very fast which shocked Mohd Asraf. Azreen got up and crashed into the
house with the smoke blinded and chocked her. She found the Old Lady lying beside her stove and her leg was stuck underneath
a pillar. Azreen tried to heave the pillar but it was scorching hot. The Old Lady asked Azreen to leave her and get out of the
burning house. The Old Lady reminded Azreen to always forgiveothers. Azreen was still trying to push the heavy pillar but it
hardly budged.
The Old lady’s head slowly lolled back lifelessly and her eyes closed. Azreen shook to wake her up. Someone suddenly
dragged her out from the house before it collapsed. It was her father. He asked Azreen to go home and cleaned up. Mohd Asraf
and the men were nowhere to be seen. Azreen went Mohd Asraf’s house and banged loudly on the door. Mohd Asraf appeared
behind her and in anger, Azreen beat him, scratched him and kicked him. Azreen moaned that the Old lady would never poison
his grandmother. Mohd Asraf asked for forgiveness and he said that he was devastated. He had lost two important persons in
his life, who were Madhuri and Nek. Mohd Asraf confessed that he and Madhuri were in love that they had planned to leave the
island. Mohd Asraf was offered a teaching course in KL and was about to leave but Madhuri asked him to postphone as she
would ask her husband to release her and informed her parents about the news. Madhuri also wanted to see Azreen before she
left. She had written to Azreen in London earlier. Few hours after their last meeting at the rubber plantation, Mohd Asraf heard
the news that Madhuri was dead and it really broke his heart.
Upon hearing that, Azreen shook her head in disbelief and ran away. She stopped on a tall cliff that plunged straight to
the sea. The next morning, her anger slowly melted as she remembered what the Old Lady taught her, that is to forgive. Azreen
stood up and went to the rubber estate. She went down near a tree which had a cup hung crookedly from the bark and noticed
thin cut lines ran diagonally from the cup. She was surprised to see the bomoh who suddenly appeared behind her. Both of
them said they were just passing through the estate.
Awang, the bomoh revealed that Madhuri was not Azreen’s real sister. She was found at the paddy field by Azreen’s
father when she was still a baby. Her mother had left her for hours while looking for scraps. The baby was nearly dying from
thirst and neglect. Azreen was shocked when she heard the secret. The bomoh also said that it was Madhuri’s real mother who
broke the chicken’s neck and started the fire in Azreen’s house.
Another secret shocked Azreen. It was the bomoh who let the gate open years ago that caused Azreen’s parents
involved in an accident which paralysed Azreen’s mother. The bomoh owed Azreen because she admitted letting the gate open.
If not, the owner would realized it was the bomoh’s doing.
The bomoh was behind Azreen telling her more stories. As they were leaving the plantation, the bomoh suddenly
mentioned about what happened on the day Madhuri was found dead. He took some tools from the rubber estate and was to
return them when Azreen’s father spotted him doing it. Luckily he was not accused of killing Madhuri. He knew the affair
between Madhuri and Mohd Asraf. He saw them strolling about together a few times in the rubber estate.
In another setting, haji Ghani was at a meeting with his committee members. He had gone to the cemetery that
morning. He knew the affair between his young wife and Mohd Asraf. On that fateful day, he knew his wife had been with his
lover at the rubber plantation. He brought a dagger with him on that day thinking that he would use it to stab his wife’s lover if
