research on effectiveness and safety, and suggests sources for additional
information.
What is YOGA?
Yoga is a mind and body practice with ancient origins in Indian philosophy. Much
like other meditative activities used for health purposes, different types of yoga
usually combine physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or
relaxation according to the National Institutes of Health.
Who benefits from YOGA?
Anyone and everyone can benefit from the effects of yoga. Some recent studies in
people with chronic low-back pain suggest that a carefully adapted set of yoga poses
may help reduce pain and improve function (the ability to walk and move). There
are also studies that suggest practicing yoga might have other health benefits such
as reducing heart rate and blood pressure, and may also help relieve anxiety and
depression.
Choosing A Certified Teacher/Facility/Type
There are some standards that should be recognized when choosing a practice first
and then a teacher or facility either online based or in person. There are many
different types of yoga and choosing the right type is important depending on
physical limitations. Hatha is a beginner style which focuses on slow movements
and breathing two to five breaths per pose. Vinyasa is a faster paced type which
moves a pose at the same time as an inhale/exhale. Teachers usually are accredited
their licensure anywhere from a couple of days to up to a 500 hour class over a
period of weeks/months. It is all depending on the type of yoga. Weather is facility
based or online, both can give insight into the type of practices an individual may
want to have.
Safety
If you have a medical condition, talk to your health care provider before starting
yoga. Everyone's body is not the same physically, and yoga postures should be
modified based on individual abilities. Select an instructor who is experienced with
and attentive to your needs. This is an important step toward helping your practice
with yoga stay safe. Ask about the physical demands of the type of yoga you are
interested in.
