Grade Level: 3rd grade
GPS:
-M3N3. Students will further develop their understanding of multiplication of whole
numbers and develop the ability to apply it in problem solving.
g. Solve problems requiring multiplication.
-M3N4. Students will understand the meaning of division and develop the ability to
apply it in problem solving.
c. Recognize problem-solving situations in which division may be applied and
write corresponding mathematical expressions.
f. Solve problems requiring division.
-M3P1. Students will solve problems (using appropriate technology).
a. Build new mathematical knowledge through problem solving.
b. Solve problems that arise in mathematics and in other contexts.
c. Apply and adapt a variety of appropriate strategies to solve problems.
I feel this book would be appropriate for 2nd-4th grade. It is a good book with great pictures for the kids, but some of the vocabulary may be difficult. It is a book about recycling, which goes along with the third grade standard pollution. Litterbug Doug is wasteful and lazy. He hates recycling. He only has rat friends and two cats, and a whole big pile of waste! Michael Recycle comes to the rescue to convince Litterbug Doug that he needs to recycle so he can have friends and live in a clean environment. Litterbug Doug finally agrees to recycle his mess and take a shower. He ends up becoming the litter bug police.
Directions: Use multiplication or division to complete the word problems from Michael Recycle meets Litterbug Doug. Explain what your numbers MEAN, how did you get the answer?
,[object Object]
Michael Recycle found rotting bananas and old moldy cheese that could not be recycled. There were 12 rotten bananas and 16 pieces of moldy cheese. There were 6 rats that wanted the rotten bananas and moldy cheese. If there are 6 rats, how many pieces of moldy cheese should each rat get? How many rotten bananas should each rat get?
Michael Recycle found faulty fridge freezers and smashed up televisions that could be recycled. If there were 5 televisions and 9 parts in each television that could be reused, how many parts total were there to get reused?

He tried to cut down his shower time to save water. This week he was in the shower for a total of 28 minutes (7 days). How long did he shower each day? Did he meet his goal of saving water?
