GIVING THE GIFT OF LIFE
Over 100,000 people are currently waiting for a lifesaving organ trans-
plant according to the National Kidney Association. Of those waiting for a
transplant, 80 percent are waiting for a kidney.
At 21 years old, Annie Nielson had the world in her hands. She was a
vivacious young women with high aspirations. On August 16, 2003, her
life changed when she suffered a massive bleed to the left side of her brain
caused by Arteriovenous Malformation. With absolutely no symptoms, An-
nie passed away three days later.
After battling diabetes since the age of five, Mike Greiner’s life was on the
line as he anxiously waited on the UW Hospital’s wait list for a kidney and
pancreas transplant. The same day as her death, Annie selflessly gave the
gift of life to Mike by donating a kidney and pancreas to Mike. During the
transplant surgery less than 24 hours after Annie’s passing, Mike’s tests showed that his blood-sugar levels normalized immediately.
Today, Mike is diabetes-free and traveling the U.S. in Annie’s memory to promote organ donation.
On July 30 through August 4, organ transplant donors and recipients from all over the country will
travel to the Alliant Energy Center to compete in the 2010 U.S. Transplant Games.
The U.S. Transplant Games host 14 Olympic-style events ranging from volleyball and basketball to bad-
minton for participants of all ages.
The Games also serve to show the immense need for organ donors. According to the National Kidney
Foundation, in 2008, for the first time in 20 years there was a decline in the number of deceased donors
used for transplants. Living donors in 2008 were also at their lowest numbers since 2001, the National
                                    Kidney Association reports.
Madison is a long recognized leader in the field of organ donation and transplantation. The 2010 U.S.
Transplant Games will be held in Madi-
son at the Alliant Energy Center and area venues for the first time ever.
Trey Schwab, Local Co-Chair of the 2010 U.S. Transplant Games and
Outreach Coordinator at UW Health, said Wisconsin was selected to
host the Games because it is the first time in the history of the Games
that a collection of transplant hospitals are hosting the event. Hospitals
include: UW Hospital, Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Hospital in Mil-
waukee and Aurora St. Luke’s Hospital.
According to Schwab, Madison also was selected to correlate with the
launch of Wisconsin’s first ever online Donor Registry.
In addition to the Games, new to the event this year is a team tailgate
party, youth program, ballroom dancing and a 5K race for organ, eye and
tissue donation awareness.
To participants and their families and friends, the culmination of the
U.S. Transplant Games also serves as a wonderful opportunity to connect
with other transplant donors and recipients.
“It was a most valuable healing experience. It gave us so much hope,
healing and passion for moving forward in our lives after our loss,” Mary
Jo Rozmenoski, part of Team Wisconsin said. “The sadness and loss will
always be there but attending the Games and seeing such enthusiasm and
life helped us feel grateful that our son had the opportunity to give the
gift of life.”
This year, Team Wisconsin will have nearly 700 members competing in
several Olympic-style events, with the games attracting thousands from
all over the country.
