Photography 101:
Perspective Changes
Everything

One of the mistakes new photographers make when
shooting nature is taking for granted the many ways a
subject can be captured. It’s a shame really because there
are literally dozens of other ways to show a subject, and
many times, the first way isn’t the best. It’s all a matter of
patience, experimentation, and creativity.

National parks hold an endless space in which
photographers can shoot all the images they desire.
However, a lot of photographers fall into the trap of
shooting subjects the way they initially see it. They fail to
realize that a few steps to either the left or the right may
yield a much more dramatic image.
Another pitfall new photographers always get trapped in is
the failure to look at color contrast. It’s a shame really since
color contrasts add a whole other dimension to an image.
Consider that nature is filled with all these wonderful colors
that change, not just as seldom as the seasons of the year,
but throughout the day.

A perfect example would be taking a picture of a snowy
mountaintop against the background of a blue sky. The
story of the image changes entirely when you take the
photo during a fiery sunset (or a sunrise for that matter).
Perspective is a gift from the universe which photographers
should never ignore.
Hi there, my name’s Allen R. Hartman, a retired
photographer. Since my retirement, I’ve taken the
opportunity to leave the urban city and get up close with
nature. If you want more tips on photography, visit my
