TLC Workshop
Reflection Paper
Leadership to me is being able to communicate effectively, be supportive, be responsible,
and set attainable goals for all members to works toward or achieve. My idea of leadership has
not changed from my attendance at the TLC workshops, but it has definitely broadened my view
to additional skills in order to make my leadership positions more pronounced. As a result of the
workshops and the fast-track workshop, I was recently influenced to take a leadership role when
trying to resolve a conflict at my work place. Because of the workshops, I now check myself
wherever I am, and make sure that what I am doing, what I may be thinking, and how I may
want to react, I remember that I want to portray leadership qualities. I don’t think I learned just
one thing about myself through these workshops. I feel like I learned a lot of things about myself
through the workshops. First, I realized that I didn’t have to be affiliated with anything specific
in order to take on a leadership role. Another thing I learned about myself is, I find myself
frequently wanting to have difficult conversations, but did not know how to approach them
effectively. I also learned that through my experiences in life thus far, I was already portraying a
number of the qualities that great leaders have in common. The one thing that had the biggest
effect on me was documenting my success on my resume. I assumed my resume was great
already, but after the resume workshops, sending my resume to the career center and going to the
fast-track workshop, I was able to make my resume admirable. I think overall with me being a
2. single mom, a student and working two jobs, I displayed leadership by attending all needed in
order to complete and graduate from the program all within two months.
Like previously mentioned, I felt like the workshops offered such a variety of things
pertaining to leadership that I learned many different things. I learned how, although social
media can both hurt and help us, it is also very unintentionally helping us display our “brand”
whatever it may be. I also learned elements to shaping a resume, building a resume and how to
list skills and abilities on your resume. Because of the workshops I have contributed what I
learned to both my personal and professional life. I was able to take a professional approach in
school life by taking initiative to start a student organization. I also took a professional approach
at work previously where I had to bring up a problem between two co-workers, but in a
professional manner, and with intentions of eliminating the tension in the air. Also in displaying
my brand, I have definitely made it a daily task to implement leadership and being a leader. I
want to be a role model, an advocate and inspire people, and having this knowledge about being
a leader even just within yourself I feel will prove beneficial in my mission.
My goal was to be more involved in school. Although I have a very busy schedule, I
wanted to have campus involvement. I have gone to lectures, workshops, games, and now
currently working on starting up organizations. I think this workshop, working on campus, and
beginning to meet wonderful people all over campus are all contributors to my mindset and drive
to become a better person, mother and role model. I have been given the opportunity to meet
people who are striving to help people and see people succeed. I have been able to attend
informative lectures, and fun evening events on campus. I have dedicated time my son by being
involved in his education and attending parent engagement workshops. I was exposed to the
Shadow Mountains painting project in order to support those living with disabilities. I have
3. gained a new level on confidence by being able to actively engage in conversations throughout
the weekly workshops. I believe that I am continuing to portray the ideals of being a leader by
completing tasks, being actively involved, and setting examples for anyone I come in contact
with.
