Contesti historical village
Contesti is the village sample Ethnographic Atlas of Romania, as typical lowland
villages, especially for peasant dwelling architecture. At the end of XIX century, was
challenged rural commune and had three hamlets: Contesti de Jos, Călugăreni and pond,
with a population of 1092 inhabitants.
Contesti village is mentioned in documents in 1525, but there was the reign of Vlad
the Monk (1482-1495). In XVI - XVII were many lords of the manor village and in the first half
of the nineteenth century there were two estates: Upper Contesti (in possession of I. Moshu)
and Contesti de Jos (Matthew's Contescu). In 1845, the fair is held weekly on Tuesdays at
Contesti de Jos. In 1864, 100 people were given land in Upper Contesti and 51 residents of
Lower Conţeşti.
