Evaluation

1. PRELIMINARY
The Preliminary Exercise represented an opportunity for us to experiment with editing and camerawork in
order to create continuity, therefore we could become more familiar and confident with it for our final. We were
advised to include master shots, match-on-action, 180 degree rule, establishing shot, shot/reverse shot, insert
shot, birds-eye view and close-ups. Shot/reverse shot technique is predominantly found in our preliminary as
the “story” revolves around the dialogue between the young girl and the fortune teller. The 180 degree rule
taught us that it is important to keep the camera on the same side for both characters that are presented and not
cross the line, otherwise it would interrupt the continuity we were aiming for.
Furthermore, we opted for match-on-action as well, which proved itself to be quite
challenging as we had to maintain continuity and not disrupt the shots. It is visible during
Isabel’s attempt to open the door and enter the room. Also, we filmed a master shot of the
entire scene as it could help us to go back to it while editing in case some other shots do not
work. The sounds we have employed are depicted by both diegetic and non-diegetic. The
diegetic one is emphasized by dialogue whereas the non-diegetic is a strange score we chose
that is constantly preserved throughout the scene. The editing software allowed us to link the
footage we had filmed, considering that we inclined consciously to capture as much footage
as we can, filming and re-filming the shots. Moreover, we had planned everything
thoughtfully beforehand, involving camerawork, storyboard and the script. The only
drawback that we faced was that that we did not have access to any other mise-en-
scene(location) except for that room, which ultimately did not suit our needs. However, we
are still contented with what we had learnt and developed.

3. FINAL
Our final film was developed with even more confidence than the preliminary, taking into account that we were
already accustomed to what a film should include and so on. We were given a plenty amount of freedom and time to
set up the skeleton of our title sequence and then proceed to eventually materialize it. The theme from the exercise
was also transcended within our final, after a few sessions of brainstorming. The type of shots that were about to be
implemented was subject to our own preference, unlike the preliminary task where we had to respect a certain
template of shots. Based on what we learnt in our previous exercise, we decided to incorporate further on the match-
on-action technique that we had practiced formerly. It is found in the young girl’s shots while she is walking in the
park. Moreover, we kept on using the over-the-shoulder, close-ups and panning shots. There are also some new
techniques we had employed in the final such as cross-cutting(through editing) and POVs which turned out to be
successful. The sounds we used here are more diverse and used in a different manner in order to establish certain
moods of bizarreness.
The non-diegetic sound is altered and occasionally toned down in order to emphasize the whispers that accompany
the young girl. The mise-en-scene consisted of a park and the studio provided by the college which helped us to
create the atmosphere we aimed for. We were taught how to use the lightning in the studio, another vital part of the
mise-en-scene which aided to establish atmosphere and juxtaposed the two characters. One had natural, sun light
whereas the other had her own eerie realm. The editing part permitted us to adjust the sounds, increase brightness
here and there, incorporate footage, etc.
