To Whom It May Concern:
Alex Greenson was retained by me to be the temporary captain of our brand new 84'
sailing yacht ANGEL, which was delivered in Auckland, N.Z. in April of 2008. The original captain
was not able to work effectively with the yard or the naval architect and had to be let go. We were
very fortunate to find Alex and have him agree to take on the assignment in early February 2008,
which started with managing the last few months of the build process. It was agreed to from the
beginning that Alex would do two cruises with us and deliver the boat back to the U.SA Mission
accomplished.
For starters Alex was very effective in representing our interests with the yard, who were
charging hard to deliver a yacht and, under the circumstances, probably more willing than usual
to cut a corner or two. Alex was able to focus on items that would have been real issues for us
and highlight them in a way that did not alienate the yard but enabled us to make changes. He
still has a good rapport with the yard and the naval architect. Alex sailed the boat for months
before our arrival to work out the kinks so that we could enjoy or time on board. He has a good
mechanical sense and knows who to get involved to solve problems.
We did two family cruises; three weeks in and around the north island of New Zealand
and a bit over a month in French Polynesia Alex delivered the boat to Polynesia as well. With
respect to his duties as Capitan, I would give him an unqualified reference. He was always totally
focused on first, the safety of the yacht and its passengers, and then the total enjoyment of
everyone on board. He went out of his way once we reached a destination to make sure that
everything we wanted to do in a venue was arranged so that there would be minimum hassle and
maximum enjoyment. He made an effort to learn the geography and culture of every place we
visited. His whole orientation was that we were on vacation and should completely enjoy
ourselves. He has a great user interface and is very easy to spend time with. He also
understands when to disappear and give owners privacy. I should also mention that as a certified
dive master, he led our family (all certified) on many interesting dives outside the barrier reefs of
Bora Bora and Morrea. He made everyone; from age 12 to 60, feel good about our cruises
Finally, Alex is a hard worker. He would start every day at 7 AM and it was not unusual to
see him working on deck at 9 PM. Of course, this was a hands-on, high performance sailing yacht
handled by a crew of two; we spent many days together making passages from island to island
off barrier reefs in 10- 15' seas with 20 to 30 knots of wind. He has excellent seamanship. I am
very confident that Alex could easily and effectively manage the staff require to run a large yacht
(in fact, he has ). While I am not a power boat person, I have been around boats my entire life,
employed professional crew for well over 10 years and been a guest on many large yachts; Alex
is the consummate professional. This is a longer reference that usual, but Alex devoted a huge
am unt of time to our yacht and our family. Hope it helps,
