SAFETY SCENARIOS
THE COST OF PRACTICING SAFETY IS FAR CHEAPER THAN NOT PRACTICING IT
There wasa breakdownin machine A atabout 10am on TuesdaymorninginfactoryXYZ whichlasted
for about3hrs raisingconcernamong the managementteam.
A contractor whohas neverbeentothe factorybefore wascalledupontohelpputthe machine in
place,as a matterof urgencyhe was broughtto site withthe company’s car boycottingsecurity &
safetychecks.He was takento the productionfloor tofix the machine asfastas possible.
The contractor started the Job immediately;unfortunatelysomethingwentwrong.
The contractor got injuredin the cause of the repair;he got one of hisfingerschopped off whytrying
to workon a rotatingpart whichimpactcouldhave beenminimized if he had the requiredPPEand
followedsafe workingpractices.
He carriedout the jobin the presence of Mr. W whois fullyaware of the company’sdrive towards
safetyculture buthisnot the safetystewardora safetyofficer orassignedtosupervise the
contractor.
The employee incharge of the jobhad some otherofficial issuestoattendtoand is aware that the
contractor has over10 years’experience onthe tasksothere isno needto appointsomeone to
oversee the operation.
He was givenfirstaidandrushedto the hospital forpropermedical attention.
The repairhad to wait.Productionhadto wait.The companyhad to pay forthe medical bills.
LEARNING OUTCOME
