2. About Yatra Char Dham
• Yatra Char Dham is a journey of faith and the most
significant event in your life time. According to Sage
Adi Shankaracharya Char Dham consists of three
Vaishnavite and one Shaivite pilgrimages of
Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri and Rameswaram.
• The other pilgrimages sites in the Indian state of
Uttarakhand viz. Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath,
and Badrinath. were known as Chota Char Dham to
differentiate them from the bigger circuit of Char
Dham sites, but after the mid-20th century they have
been also referred to as the Char Dham.

4. About Yatra Char Dham
The tradition is to visit the sites in the following order:
• * Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna River and the
seat of the goddess Yamuna.
* Gangotri, the source of the Ganges (River Ganga)
and seat of the goddess Ganga.
* Kedarnath, where a form of the Hindu god Shiva is
venerated as one of the twelve jyotirling (linga of
light).
* Badrinath, the seat of the Hindu god Vishnu in his
aspect of Badrinarayan.
6. Yatra Char Dham Significance
• It is mentioned in ancient Hindu texts that one can
attain “Moksha” ( nirvana ) by undertaking a journey
to the Four Pilgrimage Centers – Yamnotri, Gangotri,
Badrinath and Kedarnath known by a sacred name –
Dev Bhumi or The Land of The Gods.
• Yatra Char Dham is arduous and difficult journey
which takes you across seriously high Himalayan
ranges where one can witness the grandeur of God’s
creation.
7. Yatra Char Dham Significance
• Every step becomes a meditation and as one
becomes aware of every breath there is much that is
revealed within. Vedic Matras, Incense and
Resonating Bells create an enchanting atmosphere
which alleviates one of all sorrows and pain.
• Yatra Char Dham is a life time achievement and it is
believed that one can be get rid of from the
continuous cycle of birth and death and wash away
all sins.

9. Yamunotri Dham
• Yamunotri Dham – the seat of Goddess Yamuna is
the source of River Yamuna. Located 30 Kms North of
Uttakashi, it is the westernmost shrine in the
Garhwal Himalayas, perched on the top of Bandar
Poonch Parvat.
• According to legend, Goddess Yamuna is the
daughter of Lord Surya (Sun God) and Devi Sanjna
(Goddess of Conscience) and is the sister of Lord
Yama, the God of Death. It is believed that
performing holy ablutions in Yamuna guarantees a
painless death.
11. Yamunotri Dham
• The main attractions at Yamunotri are – the temple
dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and the holy thermal
springs at Janki Chatti ( about 7 Kms away). The
shrine is located at the foot of the hill, however the
source of Yamuna – Champasar Glacier is located
about 1 Km further up. There are some hot water
springs close to the temple where devotees prepare
rice and potatoes, tied in muslin cloth, to offer at the
shrine by dipping them in these hot water springs.
The cooked Rice is taken back home as prasadam.

13. Gangotri Dham
• Gangotri Dham – the seat of Goddess Ganga is the
source of River Ganges. The origin of the holy river is
at Gaumukh in Gangotri Glacier, about 19 Kms trek
from Gangotri.Gangotri is a Hindu pilgrim town by
the banks of River Bhagirathi in the Greater
Himalayan Range at the height of 3100mts. The river
is called Bhagirathi at source and called Ganga from
Devprayag onwards where it meets another river –
Alaknanda. It is said that in ancient times,
Bhagiratha, King Sagar’s grandson meditated to
please goddess Ganga to cleanse the ashes of his
ancestors and liberate their souls for moksha.
15. Gangotri Dham
• The temple is an exquisite 20ft high structure made
of white granite constructed in the early 18th
century by a Gorkha Commander, Amar Singh Thapa.
The stone on which King Bhagirath worshiped Lord
Shiva lies near the temple.
• Aarti is performed at Gangotri Temple by the priests
at 6 am and 7.45pm behind the closed doors where
public is not allowed. Special pooja is done at
Gangotri Temple on the day of Janamshtami,
Vijaydashmi and Diwali.

17. Kedarnath Dham
• The most remote of the four Char Dham sites,
Kedarnath is located in the Himalayas, about 3584m
(11759 Ft.) above sea level near Corabari Glacier, the
head of river Mandakini, and is flanked by
breathtaking snow-capped peaks. Kedarnath is
named in honor of King Kedar, who ruled in the Satya
Yuga. He had a daughter named Vrinda who was a
partial incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. She
performed austerities for 60000 years. In honour of
her, the land is named Vrindavan.
19. Kedarnath Dham
• The temple opens on Akshya Tritiya (April end or first
week of May) and closes on Bhai Duj (October end or
1st week of November) due to heavy snowfall and
extreme cold weather during winter.
• There are 2 ways to reach the town: By foot for a
steep 19 km trek through a paved path (horses or
palanquins are available for rent) from Sonprayang.
Kedarnath is one of the Cha Dham in Uttarakhand
and the most pilgrimage site amount Panch Kedar is
dedicated to lord Shiva.

21. Badrinath Dham
• Badrinath Dham is one of the most visited
pilgrimage centers in India. It is located in Garhwal
Hill tracks in Chamoli district along the banks of
Alaknanda river at the height of 3133 mts. Badrinath
is famous for the Badrinarayan Temple which is
dedicated to lord Vishnu. The Nar Parbat is located
opposite to the temple, while the Narayana Parbat is
located behind the Neelakanth peak. Inside the
temple is a 1mt tall black stone idol of Vishnu in the
form of Badrinarayan. It is considered by Hindus to
be one of the eight swayam vyakta kshetras – self
manifested statue of lord Vishnu.
23. Badrinath Dham
• The major pujas performed every morning are
mahabhishek (ablution), abhishek, gitapath and
bhagavat puja, while in the evening the pujas
include geet govinda and aarti. Recital in vedic
scripts like Ashtotram and Saharanama is practiced
during all the rituals. All the rituals are performed in
front of the devotees. After aarti, the decorations are
removed from the image of Badrinath and
sandalwood paste is applied to it. The paste from the
image is given to the devotees the next day as prasad
during the nirmalaya darshan.
