1. Language
In my news bulletin for Oldham Community Radio
the language used was kept simple so that the target
audience understand the story without confusion. I
followed a news rule which is called ‘KISS and Tell’
which stands for keep it short, simple and tell the
story. So I avoided using complex words that the
audience may be unfamiliar with. Another
convention that I followed was one of the news
values that is simplicity. These are important
requirements to produce a successful radio show as
straight forward news is of higher value.
In the BBC NEWS the language they used
was slightly intricate and more detailed
compared to the Oldham Community
Radio News. Some terms they used were
‘callous’ and ‘bleak’ which may be
unfamiliar to some people although it
does make them sound more intellectual
and professional. However, the audience
may be put off by the jargon and may lose
interest towards the bulletin.

2. Angles
For the Oldham Community Radio the
angle I took was to find out the types of
support available for victims of crime and
the crime rates against elderly people. The
interview that a member of my group
took was with a community case officer
and from the interview we found out
what action they would take to help those
victims.
For the BBC NEWS the angle that they have used is
probably to show the audience the victims
prospective and the Polices opinions on the crime as
the newspaper references to what they have said.
The angles of these stories do differ as the victim
was injured in the Oldham Community Radio bulletin
and not in the BBC NEWS and they are similar due to
the fact that the muggers got away with the
robbery.

3. Interviewees
For the hard story in our Oldham Community Radio
bulletin we decided to interview a community case
officer who is a part of the organisation that takes
action to support victims of crime. We chose to
interview this person due to the rearranging
of the angle and the relevance he had to the new
angle.
BBC NEWS didn't have an interviewee in
there bulletin, however they had the
police telling the audience exactly what
happened to the victim. The police told us
the story of the crime in the news and as a
result what has or will happen to the
victim.

4. Stereotypes / Representations
The stereotypes made in the Oldham Community
Radio bulletin was that the victim of crime was
and elderly female and this is a representation
due to the common stereotype that elderly
people are more vulnerable and can easily be
injured or hurt due to emotional and physical
threat. The story itself is a negative
representation however due to the interview
seeking support for victims of crime make it a
positive representation.
The stereotypes made in the BBC NEWS bulletin was
that the victim of crime was also an elderly female
and has the same representation. However
stereotypically there was no hero that tried to help
her or protect her, where as in my bulletin there was
the victim's husband who tried to stop the muggers
from getting away.This news story was a negative
representation and the villain got away with the
money and the victim is left with nothing and wont
be having a good christmas or any future beyond
that.

5. Factual / Statistical info?
In the Oldham Community Radio bulletin
the news was factual and reliable not only
because was Local but also because the
news was included in an article in the
Oldham Chronicle. However there is no
statistical evidence for this apart from the
police number which can be accessed and
contacted through the Article on the
Oldham Chronicle website.
For the BBC NEWS the factual and statistical
evidence is referenced in the article. 02:35 GMT on
Sunday – time and day is mentioned, also she won
cash at a casino that can be evidence. Being able to
rely on these evidences the bulletin will look much
more professional and interesting to the audience.
This is mentioned twice in the news conventions:
The 3 C’s – clear, concise and CORRECT.
Another is FACTS FACTS FACTS! Accurate and
real stories are higher in value.

6. Heros / Villains?
In the Oldham Community Radio bulletin
there is a hero who is the victims husband;
he only attempted to catch the muggers
but unfortunately he failed and there are
also villains who are three asian boys who
are aged between 15 and 21.
In the BBC NEWS the villain is the person
who burgled the victim however they
have not identified the victim in any shape
or form and the villain has got away with
the money. There was no hero in this
bulletin.

7. Bias / Impartiality?
In my bulletin the news is finding out if it is
right for elderly people to be victims of
crime also they try to find out how it can
be prevented and what action is taken to
prevent it. This news weighs out the views
for all the victims of crime and not just
one person.
BBC NEWS just discusses the burglary of
one victim, how the incident took place
and the result of the incident. This news is
more bias compared to the Oldham
Community Radio news as it focuses on
just the one person and how it had
affected them.
