Difference between marketing
and selling.
According to William .J. Stanton and Charles Futrell,
“Marketing is total system of business activities designed to plan,
price, promote and distribute want satisfying products, services, and
ideas to target market in order to achieve organizational objective”
According to the American Marketing Association,
“Marketing consist of all those business activities which direct the
flow of goods or services from producer to consumer or end user”
Origin of marketing is originated from “Adam Smiths system of
free enterprise”
 Laissez- faire (French phrase)
“to let people do as they choose”
Hands off.
Government Should not interfere in economy.
Free market.
No regulation- more goods at lower price.
Where every body is free to produce and sell what ever they like .
All means of production are controlled by the government.
No gape between rich and poor.
Every one is equal.
Society operates for the benefit of all.
He challenged free enterprise economy and argued that
wealth will remain in few hands .
Eastern Europe soviet union was in favor of Marxism
(state control)
Western Europe, USA was favor of free enterprise
So two blocks were formed , which have a friction until the
fall of soviet union in 1989 – 90 ( which is a strong supporter
of Marxism)
At the end Best system is mixed economy .
Before the evolution of marketing or era’s barter trade
was popular.
Barter system is the trading of products and services from other
products and services.
Barter trading is the simple method of transaction . In which no
money is used.
Land production.
Different techniques introduced to produce more from
agriculture land.
Source of raw material.
Land is important tool for generation of wealth.
Food security.
Industrial revolution which took place in 18th to 19th
century (Great Britain & USA)
Hand method production to machine.
Machine in place of labor.
Work shifted from homes to factories.
In the beginning of production era companies focused on..
Manufacturing process.
Manufacturers assuming that customer will buy what ever is present
in the market .
Thinking was successful in that era where market demand was more.
Production in a bulk was considered a key to success.
Manufacturers aim was to produce more at lower cost and marketer
aim was to fill the demand.
This continued until 1st world war in which the only production was
of arms and it was modified to build products. After that in (1929 – 39)
there was great depression.
After the world war1 world was facing major economic crises.
2nd great depression is of world war 2,
 After which government of every nation take notice of across border
movement (caravans come and go)
Great depression change the concepts after which people have the output
but don’t know where to sell as there is friction between the countries.
Production was no problem for manufacturers they were worried
about the sales.
Companies focused on promotional tools like (advertising, low price,
discounts etc)
They tried to sell what ever they have produced in the past, by
promotional tools.
But the problem is that customer is not satisfied after buying the
goods due to the aggressive selling by a manufacturers.
This give the birth to the marketing.
This perception of the customer change the concept of the
manufacturers
Awareness in the customer increases with the passage of time. So
companies offered;
Customers satisfaction
Goods according to need and want of customer.
It gives importance to customer.
It bring improvement in the quality of goods
Because of marketing “the aim of every business should be the
satisfaction of the consumer”
Marxism ( state controlled under some rule and regulations)
Consumers are not judged as individual but they are considered as
social markets, member of the community for the first time.
Example
 Polythene bags
 Ozone depletion
 Nuclear dumping
 Pollution.

1) A product is manufactured
keeping in view the need’s and
wand's of customer.
2) The aim is to identify and satisfy
the needs of customer.
3) Focuses on long term.
4) It is a social and economic
activity.
5) Satisfaction is goal for both
parties.
Selling
1) Selling activity production first
then by various techniques
product are sale.
2) Emphasis is on product.
3) Focuses on short term.
4) It is just only business activity.
5) Seller are just worried about their
profit.
