2. 1.1 OBJECTIVES OF THE ATTACHMENT
To enable students to integrate knowledge with real
work
To allow students to appreciate the theory they have
learned
To allow students’ exposure to various cultures and
skill development
To help the department based on the feedback
3. 1.2 METHODOLOGY
The head of the laboratory department at Quthing
government hospital was consulted and the student
was broad forward to the district medical officer, the
matron and the administrator. The student was given
the opportunity to carry out the industrial attachment.
4. 2.1 Historical background of the
organization
Prior to 1977, there was no organised laboratory services division
within the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. Since then,
laboratory services has established itself under the Clinical
services Directorate and has played a key role in the screening,
diagnosis and treatment of patients as well as in the detection
and surveillance of diseases with epidemic potential.
In 2004, the Government of Lesotho endorsed a decentralization
framework for delivery of health services to ensure that every
Mosotho has access to equitable, essential health care services
regardless of their social standing.
The quality assurance unit within the Laboratory Directorate
coordinates and oversees the Laboratory quality system
including guidelines, standard operating procedures, external
quality assessment, safety, training, site visit and supervision.
5. 2.2 Laws and regulations to which the
organization is required to comply.
The hospital is regulated by the constitutional laws of Lesotho.
The laboratories are committed to continuous quality
improvement hence the laboratory rolls out for the
Strengthening Laboratory Management towards Accreditation
(SLMTA) and preparation of labs through the World Health
Organisation Regional Office for Africa (WHO-AFRO) step-wise
accreditation process.
The regulations to which the lab technician is required to comply

The technician must be well qualified for the job
The technician must be a person of sworn honesty, accuracy and
must be very dedicated
Must be collected, classified, analysed, processed and safely
stored
