Guidelines
ā€¢ There is no slide limit. But you must structure the solution according to
the marking criteria.
ā€¢ You will get 88 hours to solve the case. The deadline for submission is
11.59 pm, February 18th, Thursday. Submission past the deadline or
altering the slides after submission will be penalized or disqualified at
the discretion of the organizers.
ā€¢ The solution file must be sent in PPT format along with the Excel file
that you have used for the calculations. The file names should be in the
following format ā€œTeam name_Capitalizer21_Grand Finaleā€. The subject
of the email should also be ā€œTeam name_Capitalizer21_Grand Finaleā€.

ā€¢ Participants will get 8 minutes to present in front of the judges with a
5-minute Q/A session.
Guidelines
ā€¢ Grand Finale will be held offline. Venue: Le MĆ©ridien (The Sky Ball Room
ā€“ 16th Floor). Address: 79/A Commercial Area Airport Rd, Dhaka 1229.
ā€¢ Participants must report at the venue within 4 pm, the event will start at
5 pm sharp.
ā€¢ No team is allowed to mention their university or membersā€™ name
anywhere in the solution. Mentioning may result in a penalty or
disqualification.

Alpha Insurance
Alpha Insurance is one of the top insurance companies in the South Asian
region. For some of its products, the company invests its clients' money as
per their choice and pays them the balance at the end of the chosen
maturity date. They have a great team of professionals coming from different
quantitative backgrounds such as engineering, pure maths and finance, but
also from other disciplines such as medicine. These dedicated professionals
work in the investment team to research into different asset classes and
invest only in the top performing assets in each class. They have also
designed funds with different composition of asset classes, to satisfy
different needs from clients/policyholders.
Alpha Group, the parent company of Alpha Insurance has expanded
dramatically over the past decade and has recognized the need to have an
internship program to select the cream of the crop, they also want to
diversify their team and this year they decided to hire students with an
interest in number crunching. Alpha group wants to become one of the best
groups of companies by being socially responsible. As a part of their CSR
activities, they hire interns to hear fresh perspectives from different
segments of society. In this way they get to know what people prefer. As
they focus on investment and they prioritize clientsā€™ choice, they have to pre-
sort funds according to peopleā€™s preferences. And the best way of knowing
whatā€™s going outside the company, is to hire interns from different
backgrounds and social segments. The company believes in giving back to
society and investing in socially responsible companies.
Moreover, interns also play a very important role in enhancing their brand
value. From interns they can know about the unreached part of the society
where the company can contribute to build a better environment.
The pool of interns from last year did a massive job in boosting sales. The
team that managed the interns retracted valuable information from them.
The interns, from various parts of society, provided information about
various losses and the problems faced by different industries. Alpha learned
that farmers of Rajshahi faced losses due to lack of rainfall and drought.
On the other hand, they have been approached by a massive corporate
client, Mount, a ride-sharing company. Mount faced huge losses due to lack
of loss control. They hired reckless drivers and those drivers met the bulk of
accidents and ultimately Mount had to pay the compensation.
Taking part in CSR activities help build a good company image and increase
customersā€™ trust in the company.
Alpha also wants to become very efficient and make their clients mitigate
risks as much as possible. So, they significantly focus on insurance loss
control.
Nizam Uddinā€™s Task
Nizam Uddin, is a senior manager at Alpha, He has been tasked to manage
this yearā€™s pool of interns. He is very busy with the CSR programs that are
going to be conducted by Alpha this month.
He also has three new clients to look after along with the old ones. He
decides to assign the new customers to a team of 4 interns. The team was
provided with client profiles, 10 fund classes and historical data of different
assets.
Client Profile 1
Rawa Noor is a Social Engineer, she has worked for the NSA her entire life.
Her life reeks of risk. On many occasions she had to use risky social
engineering techniques to extract information from an interrogation. She also
has on field experience, where she had to use her brilliant social engineering
skills to get blend in with the people behind enemy lines.
She wants to get exposure to risky assets as they are willing to take on huge
risks for big returns in the short to medium term. She is going into
retirement next year, so she has decided to use a portion of her gratuity and
pension fund (BDT 33,000,00) and invest it in different assets. She has
expressed her willingness to take risks, as long as it is a calculated risk and
carried out by experts.
Client Profile 2
Ahmed Rabbani is not a new player in the market. He has been investing in
stocks and bonds for almost 15 years. He has earned a fortune and he can be
classified as a successful investor. Recently, he has decided to have exposure
to the international market. He has had the taste of the local markets, now he
wants to expand his legacy and leave a permanent mark.
His years of experience has taught him that patience is one of the key
fundamentals in investing. Whatever happens, if you are patient and willing to
bite through tough times, in the long-term you are going to get your expected
return.
So, he is rather risk averse, he is patient, he invests in less risky buy very
prospectus assets. He decides to invest a fund of ~BDT 210,000,000. He
expects to see some decent growth in the long-term.
Client Profile 3
Rasel Ahmed is a high-net-worth investor who has recently come to us. He is a
former cricket player living abroad and has a large amount of cash in his bank.
He is a smart investor and he personally has different properties, shares and
other assets in Bangladesh but would like to diversify by allocating a portion of
his cash to a third party. He has no preference in his investment strategy and
would like us to invest for him. He has trusted us with a fund of
~BDT13,000,000.
Nizam Uddin calls on the 4 of you and says, ā€œI am not expecting much from you
and this is more like a peak into your ability than anything. But you always
have the opportunity to show your talents and impress me along with the top
management. Remember, Alpha Investment Management charges a fee of 2%
per annum of the AUM (Assets Under Management) to its clients. Letā€™s see if
you can onboard our new clients. Capitalize it beyond.ā€
Your Task
At Alpha, interns play a quite significant role in business development and CSR.
Every year a talented pool of interns are selected, and they get a chance to
extend or permanent their employment status according to their performance.
You are selected as interns this year and all of you act as a "talent pool" for the
various quantitative and qualitative functions under Alpha Group.
Task 1
After gathering the information, you have been asked to make a loss control
brochure that will consist of primary loss control techniques and insurance
policy advice which will be sent to Mount and the farmers. After that, Mount
and many of the farmers are expected to come onboard with Alpha and buy
different insurance policies to tackle their losses. As interns, you are only
expected to get creative and suggest suitable insurance products and loss
control techniques for these clients. You do not need to calculate the
premium of such products.
Task 2
With the hope to test your skills and get started with the projects, Nizam
Uddin would like you to design a really brief investment proposal for 2 of
the 3 clients of your choice, based on their requirements and the
funds/asset classes details given to you. Follow the sections below to
present the proposal.
1st section of the proposal (Risk vs Return Analysis)
This section will consist of the expected return vs standard deviation of all
the assets and the funds provided.
2nd section of the proposal (Fund Characteristics)
In this section you will have to delineate the characteristics of each fund
based on the returns and standard deviation you calculated and the
economic, political, environmental and market condition of the world. Here
characteristics mean how risky a fund is, what type of investment is good
for a fund (short or long term) and any other qualitative and quantitative
characteristics you deem is mentionable.
3rd section of the proposal (Portfolio Suggestion)
Choose any 2 from the 3 clients and suggest them a portfolio from the
funds given based on their background and profile and justify your
suggestion.
4th Section of the proposal (Projections into the future)
Calculate projections into the future (at least 5 years but depending on the
client's expected investment term) for the potential returns and amounts the
clients will be able to get under normal economic condition.

  • 3. Alpha Insurance Alpha Insurance is one of the top insurance companies in the South Asian region. For some of its products, the company invests its clients' money as per their choice and pays them the balance at the end of the chosen maturity date. They have a great team of professionals coming from different quantitative backgrounds such as engineering, pure maths and finance, but also from other disciplines such as medicine. These dedicated professionals work in the investment team to research into different asset classes and invest only in the top performing assets in each class. They have also designed funds with different composition of asset classes, to satisfy different needs from clients/policyholders. Alpha Group, the parent company of Alpha Insurance has expanded dramatically over the past decade and has recognized the need to have an internship program to select the cream of the crop, they also want to diversify their team and this year they decided to hire students with an interest in number crunching. Alpha group wants to become one of the best groups of companies by being socially responsible. As a part of their CSR activities, they hire interns to hear fresh perspectives from different segments of society. In this way they get to know what people prefer. As they focus on investment and they prioritize clientsā€™ choice, they have to pre- sort funds according to peopleā€™s preferences. And the best way of knowing whatā€™s going outside the company, is to hire interns from different backgrounds and social segments. The company believes in giving back to society and investing in socially responsible companies. Moreover, interns also play a very important role in enhancing their brand value. From interns they can know about the unreached part of the society where the company can contribute to build a better environment. The pool of interns from last year did a massive job in boosting sales. The team that managed the interns retracted valuable information from them. The interns, from various parts of society, provided information about various losses and the problems faced by different industries. Alpha learned that farmers of Rajshahi faced losses due to lack of rainfall and drought.
  • 4. On the other hand, they have been approached by a massive corporate client, Mount, a ride-sharing company. Mount faced huge losses due to lack of loss control. They hired reckless drivers and those drivers met the bulk of accidents and ultimately Mount had to pay the compensation. Taking part in CSR activities help build a good company image and increase customersā€™ trust in the company. Alpha also wants to become very efficient and make their clients mitigate risks as much as possible. So, they significantly focus on insurance loss control. Nizam Uddinā€™s Task Nizam Uddin, is a senior manager at Alpha, He has been tasked to manage this yearā€™s pool of interns. He is very busy with the CSR programs that are going to be conducted by Alpha this month. He also has three new clients to look after along with the old ones. He decides to assign the new customers to a team of 4 interns. The team was provided with client profiles, 10 fund classes and historical data of different assets. Client Profile 1 Rawa Noor is a Social Engineer, she has worked for the NSA her entire life. Her life reeks of risk. On many occasions she had to use risky social engineering techniques to extract information from an interrogation. She also has on field experience, where she had to use her brilliant social engineering skills to get blend in with the people behind enemy lines. She wants to get exposure to risky assets as they are willing to take on huge risks for big returns in the short to medium term. She is going into retirement next year, so she has decided to use a portion of her gratuity and pension fund (BDT 33,000,00) and invest it in different assets. She has expressed her willingness to take risks, as long as it is a calculated risk and carried out by experts.
  • 5. Client Profile 2 Ahmed Rabbani is not a new player in the market. He has been investing in stocks and bonds for almost 15 years. He has earned a fortune and he can be classified as a successful investor. Recently, he has decided to have exposure to the international market. He has had the taste of the local markets, now he wants to expand his legacy and leave a permanent mark. His years of experience has taught him that patience is one of the key fundamentals in investing. Whatever happens, if you are patient and willing to bite through tough times, in the long-term you are going to get your expected return. So, he is rather risk averse, he is patient, he invests in less risky buy very prospectus assets. He decides to invest a fund of ~BDT 210,000,000. He expects to see some decent growth in the long-term. Client Profile 3 Rasel Ahmed is a high-net-worth investor who has recently come to us. He is a former cricket player living abroad and has a large amount of cash in his bank. He is a smart investor and he personally has different properties, shares and other assets in Bangladesh but would like to diversify by allocating a portion of his cash to a third party. He has no preference in his investment strategy and would like us to invest for him. He has trusted us with a fund of ~BDT13,000,000. Nizam Uddin calls on the 4 of you and says, ā€œI am not expecting much from you and this is more like a peak into your ability than anything. But you always have the opportunity to show your talents and impress me along with the top management. Remember, Alpha Investment Management charges a fee of 2% per annum of the AUM (Assets Under Management) to its clients. Letā€™s see if you can onboard our new clients. Capitalize it beyond.ā€ Your Task At Alpha, interns play a quite significant role in business development and CSR. Every year a talented pool of interns are selected, and they get a chance to extend or permanent their employment status according to their performance. You are selected as interns this year and all of you act as a "talent pool" for the various quantitative and qualitative functions under Alpha Group.

Task 1 After gathering the information, you have been asked to make a loss control brochure that will consist of primary loss control techniques and insurance policy advice which will be sent to Mount and the farmers. After that, Mount and many of the farmers are expected to come onboard with Alpha and buy different insurance policies to tackle their losses. As interns, you are only expected to get creative and suggest suitable insurance products and loss control techniques for these clients. You do not need to calculate the premium of such products. Task 2 With the hope to test your skills and get started with the projects, Nizam Uddin would like you to design a really brief investment proposal for 2 of the 3 clients of your choice, based on their requirements and the funds/asset classes details given to you. Follow the sections below to present the proposal. 1st section of the proposal (Risk vs Return Analysis) This section will consist of the expected return vs standard deviation of all the assets and the funds provided. 2nd section of the proposal (Fund Characteristics) In this section you will have to delineate the characteristics of each fund based on the returns and standard deviation you calculated and the economic, political, environmental and market condition of the world. Here characteristics mean how risky a fund is, what type of investment is good for a fund (short or long term) and any other qualitative and quantitative characteristics you deem is mentionable. 3rd section of the proposal (Portfolio Suggestion) Choose any 2 from the 3 clients and suggest them a portfolio from the funds given based on their background and profile and justify your suggestion. 4th Section of the proposal (Projections into the future) Calculate projections into the future (at least 5 years but depending on the client's expected investment term) for the potential returns and amounts the clients will be able to get under normal economic condition.
