NKTI Renal Capsule 2021 - 4th Quarter
1. A Boost of Safety: The NKTI’s continued
Response to the Pandemic
The battle against COVID-19 is still
ongoing, and studies show that
after getting vaccinated against
COVID-19, the acquired protection
against the virus and the ability to
prevent infection with the variants
may decrease over time (CDC,
2021). Recent evidence also
showed that among healthcare and
other frontline workers, vaccine
effectiveness against COVID-19
infection is also decreasing over
time.
This was evident in the recent data
presented by the Infection
Prevention and Control Unit
(IPCU), wherein COVID-19
infections and breakthrough
infections, or those individuals
who were fully vaccinated still get

infected with COVID-19, were
noted among the NKTI staff. Data
showed that 63% (388 out of 608)
of NKTI healthcare workers still
got infected after completing their
primary dose.
Data also suggested that the
decreasing effectiveness of the
vaccines is likely due to the
combination of the decreasing
protection, as well as the greater
infectiousness of the Delta variant
(CDC, 2021). In which, the noted
increasing cases of NKTI
healthcare workers coincides with
the increased Delta variant
detection in the Philippines.
The NKTI Management has been
closely following the status of its

healthcare workers with COVID-
19 infection. And with the
increasing cases and reinfections
being noted, the National Kidney
and Transplant Institute (NKTI),
through its Executive Director,
Dr. Rose Marie Liquete, is one of
the major hospitals that
petitioned the administration of
booster doses to healthcare
workers.
And after much anticipation and
its approval, NKTI, with the help
of the Vaccination team, is one of
the first hospitals to have
received the COVID-19 Booster
shots last 17 November 2021 after
being announced, that those
healthcare workers who
completed their primary dose
series, with more than six (6)
months from its second dose,
shall be eligible to receive the
booster dose.

2. From this, the Vaccination Team
[composed of the IPCU staff,
Occupational Health and Wellness
Clinic (OHWC), the Nursing
Services, Medical Services, and
Hospital Support (Pharmacy,
Nutrition and Dietetics,
Housekeeping) and the
Management Information System
Division)], headed by Dr. Raquel
Victoria Ecarma, vaccinated a total
of 1925 NKTI staff, wherein 1170
employees received the Pfizer
vaccine, and 755 staff received the
Moderna vaccine.

The remaining eligible healthcare
workers, with less than six (6)
months from their second COVID-
19 vaccine dose, shall also be
scheduled accordingly.
While vaccination becomes less
effective over time, especially those
with continued exposure, or those
who are immuno-compromised,
COVID-19 vaccination still remains
effective in preventing its
transmissibility and severe disease.
That is why, receiving the booster
dose while maintaining the IPC
standard of correct mask use,
performance of hand hygiene,
observance of physical distancing
and following the Minimum Public
Health Standards, are crucial
behaviors in lowering the
transmission, infection and the
eventual end of the pandemic.
IPCU shall continue to educate
healthcare workers and advocate
measures, such as vaccination, in
order to stop the spread of COVID-
19, and make NKTI a safe
environment for patients and its
healthcare workers.
As of 13 December 2021, no active
COVID-19 cases were noted among
the NKTI Healthcare workers.

NKTI Holds Its First Best Practice
Sharing Contest
The National Kidney and
Transplant Institute (NKTI)
successfully held its first Best
Practice Sharing Contest last
December 7 via the platform
Zoom. A total of fourteen (14)
entries were submitted by various
offices from the Medical,
Education, Training and Research,
Hospital Support, and Nursing
Services. The contest's main
objective was to share these best
practices in the organization and
inspire others to further improve
and develop their processes or
systems by replicating or adapting
these practices into their work
places. The Best Practice activity
is also in line with the Strategy
Management Division's strong
commitment to fully integrate the
Performance Management System
(PGS) of the Institute.
Each contestant submitted a ten-
minute video presentation of their
best practice processes and
another ten minutes for the
question and answer portion.
Entries were judged by the
following esteemed personalities
who are also considered as
champions in PGS, namely: Dr.
Juliet J. Balderas from the
Philippine Heart Center (PHC); Dr.
Maria Eva Jopson from the
Philippine Children’s Medical
Center (PCMC); and Mr. Mark
Anthony Javier, Chairperson of
NKTI Multi-Sectoral Governance
Council (NKTI-MSGC).
An overall winner was selected
from each category. For the
Medical, Education, Training and
Research Services Category, the
entry from the Peritoneal Dialysis
won first place for showcasing the
NKTI-Baxter Center for
Excellence Peritoneal Dialysis
Warehouse under Public Private
Partnership (PPP) Framework - a
ground breaking facility that
provides one-stop-shop services
to patients. For the Hospital
Support category, the entry from
the Nutrition and Dietetics
Division (NDD) captivated the
judges interest with their food
waste reduction program through
the improvement of food quality,
its palatability, and menu
modification within the
prescribed diet of the patients.
Lastly, under the Nursing
Services category, the
collaboration of the Intensive
Care Unit (ICU) and Integrated
Vascular Complex (IVasC) rise
above all for their best practice
to decrease the incidence of
bed sore and protect patient’s
skin integrity, and prevent
them from acquiring health
care associated pressure
ulcers.
Winners received a cash prize
of Php 20,000.000, and for the
second and third places, they
also received a cash prize of
Php 10,000.00 and Php

NKTI Signs 10-Year Fully Integrated Hospital
Management Project M a r i a M a r i n e l a R . T a n d o c
P u b l i c I n f o r m a t i o n O f f i c e
The National Kidney and Transplant Institute
(NKTI) has achieved another milestone with the
signing of a 10-year fully integrated New
Hospital Information Management System
(NHIMS) last November 3, 2021 at the Institute’s
Dr. Enrique T. Ona Auditorium.
For this project, NKTI partnered with Massive
Integrated Tech Solutions, Inc. (MITSI), a local
ICT infrastructure and software solutions
specialist and SRIT Healthcare Solutions, a
Healthcare, e-Governance, Telecom solutions
and custom applications development and
integration services based in India.
This project was first conceptualized with the
original Terms of Reference as far back as August
2012 by then IRM Manager Dr. Genlinus Yusi and
Health Informatics Consultant Dr. Ryan Bañez. It
had been approved by the NKTI Board of
Regents in Sept 2014 but due to external forces,
it didn't push through. In 2017, under the
leadership of Dr. Ernesto Que, Management
Services Department head and Dr Michael Jaro,
Head of Ancillary Services, the project finally
gained steam and is now for implementation.
Once implemented, it will be the first fully
integrated NHIMS in the Philippines.
In transitioning from manual to digital, NKTI will reinforce
itself as a leader in healthcare digitization in the country.
Truly, this is an exciting time for NKTI as the full
implementation of the project will not just automate the
hospital’s many services but also enable the Institute to
reach out to more patients with efficient, and responsive
digital solutions.
Among those present during the signing of the NHIMS
were NKTI’s Executive Committee lead by Executive
Director Dr. Rose Marie R. Liquete; Dr. Ernesto R. Que,
Immediate Past Manager, NKTI Management Services
Department; Ms. Emelyn Frianela, Chief, NKTI Budget
Division; Ms. Victoria Elias, Chief, NKTI Accounting
Division; Mr. Joseph Huang, CEO of MITSI; Ms. Rizamae R.
Maramag, MITSI Assistant Managing Director; and Mr.
Vinu Raveendranthan Nair, Head of Implementation, SRIT.
The NHIMS project had its kick off and virtual hospital
activities launched last December 14 at the Dr. Enrique T.
Ona Auditorium.

NKTI SPOTLIGHT
The NKTI Spotlight showcases the stories and journey of NKTI leaders and
employees to inspire and encourage others to develop a strong commitment to
public service.
Edwin "Ewong" Pacheco:
From Quiet Employee to NKTIEA-AHW President
Mr. Edwin T. Pacheco or Ewong,
as his colleagues fondly call him,
is a Nursing Attendant from
Ward 3B. He is also the current
President of National Kidney &
Transplant Institute Employees
Association – Alliance of Health
Workers or the NKTIEA-AHW, a
legitimate union of NKTI
registered with the Civil Service
Commission (CSC) and the
Department of Labor and
Employment (DOLE).
Mr. Pacheco started his work at
NKTI twenty years ago as a
Nursing Attendant (NA) assigned
at units 2E and 2D. Eventually,
he became part of the Service
Team in charge of taking
patients to their procedures.
When the service team was
dissolved, Ewong was later
transferred to the Emergency
Room and from 2016 up to the
present, he has been assigned at
ward 3B. In 2011, Ewong became a
member of the NKTIEA-AHW. A
soft spoken person, he never
thought that one day he would
become the President of the
employees union of NKTI because
of the great responsibility
attached to it. Being a man of a
few words, Ewong was shy and
had little experience
communicating with managers
and executives of the Institute.
However, in 2016 when Jose
“Joey” Espanillo, the then union
president offered him the
position of Board of Director for
new sets of officers of NKTIEA-
AHW, Ewong accepted the
challenge. Being one of the
union's board of directors, Ewong
attended various seminars,
symposia, trainings, medical
missions. He also became the
Alliance of Health Workers
National's representative for
events and activities.
It was his attendance to these
different union activities and
trainings in which the center of
the mission is to “Serve The
People”, that he gradually became
active in conceptualizing the
needed benefits for his co-
workers at NKTI. He realized that
to be able to carry out his
projects, a legal basis is necessary
for management to agree to the
union's proposals. As Union
President, Ewong drafted
significant provisions in our
Collective Negotiation Agreement
(CNA) such as the: (1) “Salamat
Good luck Award”. This provision
rewards the services of the retiring
employees for up to Php70,000.00
with the longest year of service; (2)
Increasing of Mutual Assistance
from Php2,000.00 reimbursable to
Php5,000.00 cash with a simple
claim process; (3) Additional out-
patient medical coverage
amounting to Php50,000.00 that is
now being enjoyed by all NKTI
employees through the “Employees
Hospitalization Benefits Booklet”.
Earlier this year, he has had
numerous interviews with media
when the release of HCWs' health
care benefits was a hot topic
during the height of the Covid-19
pandemic.
In fact, Mr. Edwin T. Pacheco
proves that even a quiet person has
the ability to become a leader as
long as he has the passion and
commitment to improve the lives
of others.

The NKTI Annual Physical Examination for
Employees A m a d o A . S a u l , J r .
H u m a n R e s o u r c e M a n a g e m e n t D i v i s i o n
Every year, all permanent NKTI employees are
required to undergo a set of medical exams to check
their overall well-being. This is done through a
series of routine examinations called the Annual
Physical Exam (APE). The APE is monitored by the
NKTI Employees Physicians’ Dr. Erlor Y. Celerio and
Dr. Ghalswendy Lampel N. Magallanes at the NKTI
Employees Health and Wellness Clinic.
The main purpose of the APE is to determine the
general status of each employee’s health. These
exams are used to check for possible disease so that
they can be treated early, identify any issues that
may become medical concerns in the future,
monitoring of those employees with existing health
conditions and to ensure that employees are
maintaining healthy diet, proper ergonomics,
exercise and wellness routine.
Some of the basic procedures that are required for
employees below 40 years old include Complete
Blood Count (CBC,) Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS)
Urinalysis, Fecalysis and Chest X-ray.

The Employee Relations Corner features issues on and information
about employee welfare, benefits, satisfaction, engagement,
performance and other concerns.
Employees who are 40 years old and above are required to undergo additional blood tests like Triglycerides,
Cholesterol and Creatinine. An Electrocardiogram (ECG) is also included for this age group in addition to
the abovementioned blood chemistry tests, to monitor cardiac health of our older employees.
There are also special procedures required for employees such as Pap smear, Mammography and Breast
Examination for females above 40 years old; and Prostate - Specific Antigen (PSA) – a blood test used
primarily to screen for prostate cancer for males above 50 years old.
Before hiring, applicants will undergo pre-employment check up and six (6) months after hiring, an APE
Form (Pink Form) will be issued by the HRMD – Employee Relations Section to the newly hired employees.
Pink Forms are usually issued to qualified employees on the first week of January of every year. Employees
are instructed to prioritize the Chest X-ray and Fecalysis for the compliance of the NKTI Sanitary Permit
mandated by the Quezon City Health Department.
Aside from the APE, there are additional medical benefits for NKTI Regular Employees thru the Collective
Negotiation Agreement (CNA). A total of Php. 50, 000.00 worth of Out Patient Procedures and 45 days free
confinement is allotted for each employee per year.
In the pink of health: Every year, the NKTI Human
Resource and Management Division (HRMD)
issues the APE form to all employees as part of the
requirement for the annual medical check-up
