Duties and Responsibilities
Pathologists' Assistant: Describe gross anatomic features of surgical specimens, dissect
and prepare surgical specimens for histologic processing. Prepare and cut frozen tissue
sections for pathologist examination. Obtain and prepare tissue specimens for special
procedures such as electron microscopy and immunofluorescence studies. Assist in the
preparation and performance of human postmortem examinations. Instruct pathology
residents in grossing techniques. Supervise prospective collection of tissue for current
and proposed research studies.
Research Assistant: Perform experiments, record and analyze results, maintain detailed
notes of procedures and data. Set up protocol for new experiments based on previous
results. Perform literature and data base searches in areas of experimental interest. Write
articles and present experimentally derived data for professional journals and

Medical Technologist/Technician: Obtain, process and analyze medical specimens for
clinical testing as ordered by physicians. Report test results and notify primary personnel
of any critical values. Update and write new procedures for lab procedure manuals. Train
and instruct interns, lab staff, hospital staff and physician office employees at conferences
about laboratory procedures
