5. Castors
A castor is a
wheeled
device typically
mounted to a larger
object that enables
relatively easy rolling
movement of the
object
8. 1.Light Duty/Light Duty Extra
Strength Pressed Steel Castors
Light duty castors are suitable for
hospital furniture, house hold
furniture & equipments , laboratory
equipments , food serving trolleys in
hotels & canteen etc. where weight
of material to be carried is small.
Light duty extra strength castors are
particularly suitable where LD
castors fails too frequently & where
loads are moderate. Both LD & LD-X
castors looks like same. Only
difference is LD-X castors are
manufactured from higher plate
thickness.
SRT, PU-PP, PP, UHMW wheels are
assembled in LD & LD-X castors
9. 2.Medium Duty
Pressed Steel Castors
Medium Duty castors are designed to carry
moderate loads i.e. more than LD or LD-X
castors, and are suitable for various types of
trolleys used in industries, warehouses,
godowns, stores, railway platform and so on.
These castors are also suitable for hospital
furniture, laboratory equipments or food
serving trolleys where load carrying capacity
required is higher & the light duty castors
need frequent replacement.
SRT, BRT, PU-PP, PU-CI, PP, NYL, UHMW, FBR, CI
wheels can be used in medium duty castors.
10. 3.Heavy Duty Pressed Steel
Castors
Heavy Duty Pressed Steel Castors
are recommended where floor
conditions are not good & loads are
moderate. Load carrying capacity
of Heavy Duty Pressed Steel Castor is
much more than medium duty
castors. These castors can withstand
occasional shock loads & higher
speeds. These castors are highly
suitable for trolleys & equipments
used in engineering industries,
automobile industries & so on.
SRT, BRT, PU-PP, PU-CI, PP, NYL,
UHMW, CI wheels can be fitted in
Heavy Duty Pressed Steel castors.
11. 4.Heavy Duty Forged Steel Castors
Heavy Duty castors are recommended
where floor conditions are not good &
MD castors needs frequent replacement.
These castors can withstand occasional
shock loads & higher speeds. Heavy Duty
swivel castors are of two types. i.e. HD-F &
HD-C. However, important dimensions
such as mounting holes, overall height
etc. are exactly same for both types of
castors. Therefore, matching fixed castor [
FX(HD) ] is same for both types of swivel
castor. SRT, BRT, PU-PP, PU-CI, PP, NYL,
UHMW, FBR, CI wheels can be used
in heavy duty castors.
12. 5.Heavy Duty Forged Steel Twin
Castors
Twin castors have the advantages of
greater load carrying capacity for the
same castor height. The load is
distributed over a wide floor area. But
because of the differential movement
of two wheels, the scrubbing action
that arises on turning from the use of
wide tread single wheel is avoided. The
use of twin castor is, therefore,
advantageous than use of single
wheel castor with wider tread width of
the wheel. Attachments such as wheel
lock, wheel brake & swivel lock can be
provided on these castors.
SRT, BRT, PU-PP, PU-CI, PP, NYL, UHMW,
FBR, CI wheels can be used in heavy
duty twin castors.
13. 6.Track Castors
The track castors are designed
to use over inverted angle iron
tracks or over square section or
over rails. Cast iron wheels with
either V-groove or square
groove or a flange are available
depending upon the track over
which the castors have to
move. Since the wheel rolls on
steel track, the pushing or puling
force required is much less. This
reduces labour fatigue. Floor
surface also does not get
damage at any time. The track
wheels can be fitted in fixed &
swivel brackets of MD or HD
series
14. Tips on Choosing and Using
Castors
Casters fall into two categories: furniture and shop equipment
casters.
Plastic furniture casters have two wheels and move well on
carpet. They are light-duty casters and cannot carry a
great deal of weight. They are long-duration tools.
Hard rubber wheel casters swivel in all directions for
increased mobility. They are more durable than plastic
wheels. They are plate-mounted with screws going right
into the board.
Use casters with stems for furniture with legs. They are
mounted with sleeves that are inserted into the legs of the
piece of furniture.
When you do not want casters to show, attach a skirt to the
plywood base on which the casters are mounted.
15. Most shop equipment casters are plate-mounted. Light-duty,
inexpensive plastic shop casters that do not swivel are hard to
manoeuvre around corners. They do not roll over electrical
cords. It is possible to purchase swivelling shop casters -- but
that type still won't roll over electrical cords.
Heavy-duty steel wheel casters can carry a large load,
despite the small size. When they are loaded down, they are
difficult to get over obstacles, like power cords.
Durable, hard rubber shop casters have locks with teeth on
them to keep the wheels from rolling when you want them to
remain stationary. These wheels have no problem going over
electrical cords when loaded down.
Use large casters if you have to drive over cables. Four
swiveling wheels provide the most maneuverability. If you
have two swivel and two fixed wheels, you will still have
problems moving the casters in some directions. Use casters
with locking wheels to keep the unit from rolling.
16. Here are some different kinds of
Castors
Stem Casters are an assembly with a wheel (or several) wheels mounted
onto a fork, with a stem for attaching it to the bottom of an object. The
stem is what sets it apart from other casters. They are used to provide
mobility to an otherwise stationary item and are typically made with
polyurethane, soft rubber caster wheels which will not scratch or mark up
floors.
Plate Casters contain a wheel or compound wheel with a plate on top for
simple mounting. These kinds of casters have the ability to carry more
weight than stem mount casters. As a result, plate casters can be used to
turn an otherwise stationary object into a vehicle, primarily for material
handling applications.
Levelling Casters are designed for easy moving and level setting machines.
They can be used for various applications such as chairs, shop vacuums
and service carts and can be switched back from mobile to stationary
nearly instantly.
Pneumatic and Solid Rubber Casters are made up of materials that allow
for low-speed movability for fragile and delicate cargo. They are designed
to provide a cushioned, shock-absorbed, quiet ride. Casters with
pneumatic wheels are usually the best choice for use outdoors over rough
surfaces like gravel and grass.
Side Mount Casters have a vertical mounting plate that attaches to either
the side or corner of equipment, furniture, equipment, gates and many
other types of items to make mounting both easy and mobile.
17. Conclusion
The primary benefit of caster wheels entails the ease of moving
machinery and furniture. If you intend to purchase some caster
wheels for your office or home you need to consider the following
points:
• Wheel Diameter
• Swivel Radius
• Dynamic Load & Load Capacity
• Roll ability
• Brakes
• Mounting Considerations
