To just summarize the article, a previously undisputed, Scottish boxer by the name of
Mike Towell died shortly after his first loss in hospital. It has been confirmed that he
was experiencing headaches before the match during training and now people are
debating whether the British and Irish Boxing Association, Mike himself or Mike’s
trainers are to blame.
I personally am undecided on who’s at fault but as somebody who does martial arts,
one of which is boxing, this hits slightly close to home and worries me that the utmost
precautions were not taken. Assuming that Mike lied to the association’s doctor that
was in control of the pre-fight medical check, then it’s just a matter of Mike’s pride or
desperation for money making him discard his safety. However if it was due to
anybody else, for example Mike’s training team, then this is unacceptable and they
deserve to be prosecuted. Any team that risks an athlete’s life for their own personal
gain (as the fight was relatively anticipated) should be considered contributors to
manslaughter. And if it was the fault of the association then something needs to
change and while this is the first incident where an athlete has died from fight-related
injuries in 21 years in the UK, which is a good streak, it’s still sad it happens at all.
