23. The Ghaf tree is the most beautiful evergreen tree of the
desert.
In 2008, it was declared as the national tree of the
UAE because of its great cultural and traditional
significance.
The Ghaf is a drought-tolerant tree, able to withstand the
harsh desert environment and still remain green. It can be
found on low sand dunes and its presence is an indicator
there is water underground.
The Ghaf can live up to 120 years!
24. How to protect the environment by planting
trees?
Trees are like the lungs of the planet. They breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen.
Additionally, they provide habitat for birds and other wildlife. But that’s not all trees do for us!
• CO2 is one of the major contributing elements to the greenhouse effect. Trees trap CO2 from
the atmosphere and make carbohydrates that are used for plant growth.
• They give us oxygen in return.
• Trees also help to reduce ozone levels in urban areas
• Trees reduce urban runoff and erosion by storing water and breaking the force of rain as it
falls. The USDA reports that 100 mature trees can reduce runoff caused by rainfall by up to
100,000 gallons!
• Trees also absorb sound and reduce noise pollution. This is especially important for
people who live near freeways. In some cases, a well planted group of trees can reduce noise
pollution by up to 10 decibels. (Source: New Jersey Forest Service.)
25. SLOGANS AND POEMS…. to create awareness to
plant trees. On ARAB ENVIRONMENT DAY
“If you cut a tree, you
kill a life. If you save a
tree, you save a life.
If you plant a tree, you
plant a life.”
My dear little Tree,
How tall can you be?
You clean the air,
That blows my hair.
You give me food,
And make me feel good.
You allow me to rest,
And birds to make nest.
Though you care for us
We end up cutting you.
I am sorry ,for you bring the greenery,
And beautify the scenery.
I promise to you my friend that I always
remember,
Saving you, Saves me.
