management we need to know you
understand your responsibilities as
healthcare professionals and volunteers.
This training will make you aware of the
HIPAA laws and how bad decisions can
affect a patients well being and your
employment.

HIPAA-The Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA),
Public Law 104-191, was enacted on
August 21, 1996. Sections 261 through
264 of HIPAA require the Secretary of
HHS to publicize standards for the
electronic exchange, privacy and security
of health information.

A major goal of the Privacy Rule is to
assure that individuals’ health information
is properly protected while allowing the
flow of health information needed to
provide and promote high quality health
care and to protect the public's health and
well being.

Improper use of this information can
create lawsuits for our facility.
Staff or volunteers misusing this
information will be subject to disciplinary
action which could include termination.

Employees should only view medical
records in which they are directly related.
Regardless of a persons social or political
“celebrity” status, their medical records
are NOT considered public record and will
remain private.
When viewing medical records be sure
that when finished log off, or return the
chart so one can assess the material after
you leave.

Do not give computer passwords to other
employees
Do not leave charts unattended
Be aware of your surroundings when
viewing sensitive material
Do not let curiosity cloud your judgment
Do not discuss medical records in public
Treat someone’s privacy as you would
want for your own
Attend HIPAA training sessions to ensure
you are using the best practices
