8. Reworking the floral motif from SS20
“I liked the idea that a rose
can be a person, it can
stand for a symbol of
beauty, it can stand for
many things”

The Look
15. Strange Beauty
Dries Van Noten currently sells one fragrance, Dries Van Noten par Frederic Malle. This unisex fragrance
is classified as an oriental woody and has top notes of sandalwood, vanilla, and tonka bean, so it's a
very warm, spicy, and woody fragrance classified for fall and night. It's time that Dries Van Noten
creates another fragrance to match the bright florals found in his collections as well as his personal
garden. Strange Beauty takes inspiration from the Fall 2019 collection where Van Noten photographed
his own flowers to create floral unique floral prints. The unisex fragrance captures the fresh beauty of
flowers, as well as the strange scents of wet earth and notes of decay. This ties back to Van Noten's
documentation of flowers when he said, “you saw all the flowers with imperfections, but it gives the
flowers reality.”
The strange beauty of Dries Van Noten is that he does not reserve florals for spring, and instead
incorporates them year-round. Florals are not just a passing trend for this brand, and that's why
Strange Beauty will resonate with the Dries Van Noten customer. This fragrance is designed to
celebrate florals but with enough woody and musk tones to be a unisex fragrance. The packaging
itself works as an art piece and would perfectly match the space of anyone who owns plants or
antiques. The design of the fragrance and packaging also takes inspiration from the Vogue review of
the Spring 2019 show that said, "upliftingly colorful and rationally wearable, it was artistically posh in
the places a woman needs it" because this fragrance is uplifting but not so intensely floral that it's
unwearable, and the bottle itself uses the Zinnia-colored glass to highlight the creativity of the wearer.
