English is Life
Reading, writing and learning have been my favorite pastimes for as far back as I can
remember. By my second year in college I knew that a major in English Education was what I
really wanted. I love explaining things and performing activities related to English literature
because I feel like I finally understand why I’ve always been so naturally inclined with all things
within the core of English. One of my all-time favorite subjects is Shakespeare.
Shakespeare’s texts are what everything since Shakespeare has been compared to. I know
that the topic of Shakespeare and his plays, sonnets, and life is not everyone’s forte. Some people
are scared of such a huge topic in English and history. And some students just do not care for
English, let alone Shakespeare. But that’s what I would like to do in my career. I want to instill,
if not a love, then a respect for Shakespeare as an English authority. Because that is all we can
do, as teachers, in our fields. We will never force someone to be good at, or like a subject by
sheer force of will. We can only teach the students and hope that they gather something from
what we have taught them.
Learning about Shakespeare, and everything that came after his time, planted a seed of
curiosity in me that has only continued to grow voraciously during my college years. I have
taken a few classes on Shakespeare as well as some notable names before and after him, and my
love and absolution of my chosen major has only grown. I want to help others find their calling
and develop an appreciation for the world of English literature and education.
