It happens over a slow period of

My neighborhood is located
between Hyde Park and South
Shore. It is called Greater Grand
Crossing. I noticed the
Gentrification process slowly
growing of several years.
In the last year the process has
grown to be more rapid than it’s
ever been.
4. Why??
Gentrification is not supposed to be negatively based on race however due to
relations between race, income and housing, minorities, especially black people
have been the victims of gentrification
Chicago has been known to be the most segregated city when it comes to housing
in relation to race.
Based on an article in Chicago Sun Times earlier this year, University of Chicago
conducted a study which show that on the southside of Chicago a rapidly there is
shrinking middle-class and population loss is more of a problem than gentrification.
-However in my opinion these issues have a cause-effect relationship.

6. The Deeper Issue...
When it comes to the south side of Chicago, where residents are plagued with
many problems, People may argue that what is the most pressing issue.
As I read articles discussing gentrification on the southside of Chicago, I found
options that suggest gentrification is not a problem black southsiders should be
worried compared to other issues.
These are very serious problems in the community however no problems outweigh
another. Genfication is a solution to these other problems such as lack of economic
development & education which causes Un/underemployment which causes
violence & crime. Those problems eventually causes gentrification.
Gentrification is an answer to those problems the government creates that helps
the city but not the people, particularly if it leads to displacement.
8. In my community, there new
establishments that are servicing
clients that are not necessarily long
time residents.
One establishment called The Stony

media archive, library and community
center
However the audience being catered
by this organization make it not so
much an open community center

9. I will propose to the chair of that organization that they
should be better in involved in the community, and have
space for young black members of the community to learn,
entertain or offer them a service. The space may be a
community center but the awareness around the community
is not there. We don’t feel invited.
Actions
Outside of the community center, we can self-educate and
self-fund our neighborhoods using successful Financial literacy
lessons & Co-ops systems suggested by the Agenda to Build
Black Futures
10. Gentrification with true mixed income housing and
replacement plans and/or mortgage rate/ rent lock can be
great.
However Gentrification that leads to displacement, is horrible
because people are burdened with unstable housing. Some
become homeless. And that is unacceptable.
