What does the election of Joe Biden mean for India. Do we stand at a more favourable position for the USA, or we are worse off than the trump government. We try to do a detailed analysis of this topic.
2. Historically democrats have been friendlier with
New Delhi.
Biden was instrumental in removing US sanctions
from India after the Pokharan nuclear test.
In 2006, three years before he became the Vice-
President of the US, Biden announced his vision for
the future of US-India relations: “My dream is that
in 2020, the two closest nations in the world will be
India and the United States,”
3. India can expect a more favourable position, as
compared to the Trump administration.
A more predictable and stable government.
Reform of H-1B visa system.
Eliminate limits of employment based green
cards.
A tough stance against China’s expansionist
policies.
Greater support of India in the Indo- Pacific
region.
Some resistance against abrogation of article
370 in Jammu and Kashmir and Citizenship
Amendment act.
4. There has been bipartisan support from the
democrats and republics to have stronger ties
with India, and Biden is expected to take it
forward.
Improvement in trade policies, can give a boost to
the Aatmanirbhar bharat and Make in India.
Biden being a more seasoned politician is
expected to make more rational decisions
With better ties, we can expect more investment
from US companies, in the Indian economy.
Despite some concerns, we stand at a better
position as compared to the Trump government.
5. Biden’s plan to ‘Make in America’ can affect
India negatively. (India would therefore
receive less FDI)
Carbon adjustment fees from large carbon
emitting countries.
“In Kashmir, the Indian government should
take all necessary steps to restore rights for
all the people of Kashmir,” says Biden’s
Agenda for Muslim Americans, published on
the campaign’s website.
This could mean an external interference into
the matters of national importance in India.
If the Biden’s administration decides to take it
easy on China than what Trump’s
administration did, it could complicate India’s
position with China.
6. However, it is estimated that Indo-US relations would continue
to strengthen under Biden’s presidency.
It is expected that US will back India’s membership as a
permanent member of the United Nations (UN).
US will continue co-operating with India in countering
terrorism, climate change and health issues.
