1. Google and Bing Images: Image Retrieval in
Modern Times

2. BACK GROUND
Before the advent of the digitization process, image collections were accessible
only through librarians, archivists and curators who used to index these
images using text descriptors or some classifying codes.
Based on the Vennevar bush’s idea of “information search” in 1945.
The first microcomputer based image database retrieval system was
developed at MIT, in 1990s.
With the advent of World Wide Web a good number of online image retrieval
systems also came into fore.

SYSTEMS
Text based / Annotation based Image Retrieval (ABIR).
Content based image retrieval system (CBIR).
4. WORKING
In text based approach manual and text- based algorithm is used to annotate the images including
Keywords, Caption of the images, text surrounding the images entire text of the image containing
pages and sometimes file names and webpage descriptions or by adding text to images in order to
tag images based on their metadata and then using the text-based data management system
(DBMS) to retrieve the required images.
5. • In a CBIR, the image signals are analyzed on the basis of their visual contents, as
colors, shapes and textures, which are also called as low-level features.
• The images are sought by calculating the similarity in terms of these low-level
features between a query image and a set of database images.
• CBIR systems at times also provide text-based search functions for notations and
text descriptions embedded within images.
6. Each of these search engines provides a unique way to search
for images of practically anything you may be interested in
finding.
7. Search by

Search by Text
Property of Global Leaders in Search Engines Google.Inc.
introduced in July, 2001.
8. Time filter– the ability to filter images by when they were posted.
No Ads- Google does not distract the user with ads appearing before the search results.
Filtered Searches- Google allows the user to specify the image search by time, size, color, type, and
view.
More results- Google generally has more images that are easier to see and access with the layout.
9.
10. Founded by Microsoft in 2009.
allows the user to specify the image search by time, size, color, type, and view.
Layout– Layout allows you to find images that are specifically square, wide, or tall.
People– is useful when you are specifically looking for parts of a person in a picture.
Related Searches– Bing Images also provides a series of related image searches based on your query.
Preferences– Within preferences you can specify how many results you want to show up on the page,
which language(s) the search will be limited to, the ability to display search suggestions, and allowing
Bing to use your location.
11. CONCLUSION
• While the image traffic over internet is growing big with each passing moment, the computer
scientists and information professionals are leaving no stone unturned to provide the information
users accurate and efficient results.
• Aim is to reduce the semantic gap in the field of image searching that is nudging the scientists to
update the image search engines on a regular basis.
