Dr. A.C. Sakal wrote a letter to Dr. Nina Shoulberg about a patient named Mia, a 10-year old pit bull mix with a long history of allergic dermatitis and secondary infections. At Mia's most recent visit, she was treated for an acute case of ear infection. Dr. Sakal suggested continued home treatment and recommended that Dr. Shoulberg get involved in Mia's care due to her long history of untreated allergic skin disease.

Dear Dr. Shoulberg:
I’m sending this letter as an addendum to the file of “Mia” Bobek, a ten year old spayed
female Pit Bull mix that was seen by me last month, for the first time, for an acute
manifestation of what has been a long history of allergic dermatitis complicated by all the
usual, secondary infections and inflammatory aspects of these diseases. Particularly
pertinent at the time of that visit was a flare up of otits externa that was treated with a
Gentocin Otic analogue and a suggestion to use a home remedy containing a boric acid
based mixture (post Gentocin therapy) to help ensure future control. A prophylactic
ultrasound of the spleen was performed to r/o any pending neoplasia; this was negative.
As a minimum I suggested cool water baths with “Malasseb on a frequent basis.
Since “Mia” has a long history reflective of repeated serious bouts of allergic skin
disease, without any previous diagnosis and treatment associated with a dermatologist, I
suggested that your involvement in this case is long overdue.
Thank you in advance for your consideration,
A. C. Sakal DVM
