Anyone who has dealt with complex systems will know that the introduction of new technology can often have unexpected consequences. This is especially true when new technology could be a game-changer in the multibillion-dollar healthcare industry. This is truer when multiple third parties are involved between the wearer, their doctor, and the employer.
2. A smart watch is designed to coordinate with your phone using Bluetooth
technology to make sure that you never miss a call again. Your smart watch will
notify you of a call and if set for it, will also tell you who is calling. No need to drag
you phone out of your pocket or from the bottom of your handbag.
3. Smart Watch or Smart Cuffs?
Apple is expected to announce their long-awaited
smart watch at the media event on September 9th
2014. Apple's smart watch will be equipped with
numerous sensors that monitor wearers' health, such
as heart rate, sleep quality, and hours. This information
combined with the "HealthKit" developer tools
released by Apple in June could lead to new fitness and
health apps that help wearers monitor their health and
improve it.

5. As someone who is a regular early adopter of
technology, I keep coming back to two articles that I
read recently as I consider the potential benefits and
drawbacks of smart watches. The first was a July 3,
2014. Businessweek article on Carolinas Healthcare,
which manages more than 900 nursing homes and
other care centers. Carolinas Healthcare has been
collecting information about credit card purchases,
loyalty card transactions, and other records for more
than 2 million people. Analyzing people's spending
habits is a way to create more detailed risk
assessments than can be done using information that
patients freely give to their doctors.
6. Although I don't worry about my employer
monitoring my smart watch sensors (I own my
business), I am more concerned about society's
general direction. I accept the idea that third parties
(employers and insurance companies, etc.) can
monitor my data. It is possible to monitor almost
every aspect of our lives. We as a society give away
a lot of information. Cell phone companies know
who we are and where we are 24 hours a day, credit
card companies know what we buy and internet
marketing companies track every move we make
online.
7. Smart watches take smart watches beyond what is already available to scan customer loyalty cards or make
purchases with credit cards. It is a well-known fact that information can't be taken back once it is given
away. It is impossible to control the way information is used once it has been given away.
