CAILabs – AROONA 11/03/2016
Multi-mode fibers > 220m restrict bit rates
Multi-mode fibers (MMF) represent 85% of inter-building fibers
- OM1 / OM2 / OM3 / OM4 fibers
- Maximum bit rate depends on the type and length of multi-mode fiber
 Abandon entire multi-mode network by redeploying single-mode fiber ?
Maximum length 100 Mb/s 1 Gb/s 10 Gb/s
OM1 2000 m 550 m 220 m (~40m)
OM2 2000 m 600 m 220 m (~80m)
OM3 2000 m 600 m 330 m
CAILabs – AROONA 11/03/2016
AROONA: Overcoming limitations of multi-mode fibers
X400 capacity
- Up to 4 channels at 10Gb/s for fibers up to 10km
- Several ranges depending on the network topology (point to point, star, POL)
- WDM compatible – 40G, 100G…
Compatible with standard fibers and transceivers
- Any type of multi-mode fiber 62.5/125 µm or 50/125 µm
- Any type of single-mode transceiver
- Transparent to communication protocol (ethernet, fiber-channel…)
Reduced cost
- 3 times cheaper than a fiber roll-out; up to 10 times cheaper if complexities exist
- Passive system: no additional costs of consumption, cooling, monitoring
- Installation takes only few hours
CAILabs – AROONA 11/03/2016
AROONA-P2P
Two buildings are connected by a long multi-mode
fiber
- Bit rates limited to 1 Gb/s (or even 100 Mb/s)
Installation of AROONA-P2P at each end
- 4 duplex links at 10 Gb/s up to 10 km
- 4 SMF fiber pairs inside a MMF fiber pair
- Without any need to change the fiber
”Deployment at Université de Rennes 1
clearly shows AROONA’s potential to
meet the need for demands for higher
LAN bandwidth. The ease of
implementation of AROONA is a key
feature to avoid new fiber deployment”
Arnaud Mérel, infrastructure
manager, Université Rennes 1
CAILabs – AROONA 11/03/2016
AROONA-STAR
Upgrades the network with a single component
- 10 Gb/s over all branches of a star LAN (instead of 100Mb/s or 1Gb/s)
- Up to 6 branches
- 100 Gb/s compatible
AROONA-STAR ‘only at the core of the network’ – No installation required at remote sites
CAILabs – AROONA 11/03/2016
AROONA-POL
AROONA-POL facilitates the transition to Passive Optical LAN on existing
infrastructure
No need to do complex fiber roll-out between buildings and into risers
CAILabs – AROONA 11/03/2016
Customer feedback
AROONA-P2P solution enabled the Urban Community of Alençon to modernize its
network infrastructure without deploying new fibers
 76% cost saving compared to an upgrade of the infrastructure by recabling
«We were confronted with bottlenecks over
several fiber links for many years. We had
considered deploying new single-mode
fibers, but given the location of our buildings
in the city center, the cost was prohibitive .
AROONA has been the ideal solution to us, it
is a real boon for us.»
Jean-Paul Genevoix, CIO of Alençon
Urban Community
CAILabs – AROONA 11/03/2016
Customer feedback
AROONA-POL solution has enabled IBM to renovate the LAN of CEREMA to a Passive
Optical LAN archtitecture with Tellabs GPON equipments without recabling
 37% savings compared to recabling (installation cost included)
« We wanted to implement an innovative
and environmentally friendly solution. The
ease of implementation of GPON solution
with AROONA-POL and the smoothness of
operation fascinated us.»
Gil Romand, CIO of CEREMA
CAILabs – AROONA 11/03/2016

An optical technology
CAILabs – AROONA 11/03/2016
Light shaping technology
- Based on proprietary MPLC technology (Multi-Plane Light Conversion)
- Combines several light beams into a single one through reflections on textured
surfaces
- Many applications in telecom and industry

How does it work? AROONA avoids modal
dispersion
Capacity limitation in conventional multimode fibers is due to modal dispersion
Aroona avoids modal dispersion by coupling and detecting precisely the modes of the
fiber
Conventional multi-
mode input

  • 20. How does it work? AROONA avoids modal dispersion Capacity limitation in conventional multimode fibers is due to modal dispersion Aroona avoids modal dispersion by coupling and detecting precisely the modes of the fiber Conventional multi- mode input Degraded signal Different modal speeds Entrée sur des modes spécifiques La séparation des groupes de modes permet de récupérer les signaux non dégradés Separating mode groups recovers undegraded signals Input on specific modes CAILabs – AROONA 11/03/2016
