This document provides formatting guidelines for research papers, including:
- Use 8.5x11 white paper and high quality printing.
- Leave 1 inch margins and double space the entire paper.
- Include a header on the first page with your name, instructor, course, and date. Do not include a title page.
- Number pages in the top right corner with your name and page number.
- Provide sources for tables and illustrations and notes below.
- Proofread carefully before submitting. Use binders or folders for organization. Follow electronic submission guidelines closely if applicable.

FORMATTING GUIDE FOR RESEARCH PAPERS
1. FORMAT OF THE RESEARCH PAPER

2. PAPER
• Use only white, 8.5 by 11 inch paper.
• Don’t submit work typed on erasable paper, which smudges easily.
• Use high quality paper.
3. PRINTING OR TYPING
• Choose a standard, easily
readable typeface
• Use a high quality paper
• Print on one side of the paper
only
• Keep a backup copy on disk
4. MARGINS
• Leave margins of one inch at the top and bottom and both sides of
the text
• Indent the first word of a paragraph one half inch from the left
margin
• Indent set off quotations one inch from the left margin
5. SPACING
• Leave double space including quotations, notes, and the list of
work cited
• Leave one space after a period or other concluding punctuation
mark
6. HEADING AND TITLE
• It does not need a title page
• Leave one inch from the top of the first page and flush with left margin , type
your name , your instructor name, the course number, and the date on separate
lines
• Leave double space between the title
• Don’t underline your title and put it in quotation marks or type it in all capital
letters
7. PAGE NUMBERS
• Number all pages consecutively throughout the research paper in the
upper right-hand corner
• Leave one inch from the top and flush with the right margin
• Type your name before the page number
8. TABLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS
• Type both label and caption flush
left on separate lines above the
table
• Give the source of the table or
any notes immediately below the
table
10. BINDING
• A plastic folder or some other kind
of binder may seem an attractive
finishing touch
• Pages of your research paper may
get misplaced or lost if they are
left unattached or merely folded
down at a corner
11. ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION
If you are asked to submit
your paper electronically,
obtain from your teacher
guidelines for formatting,
mode of submission (e.g.,
bye-mail, on a Web site), and
so forth, and follow them
closely.
