This scribe had the honour of meeting this great
Armenian Christian Officer of the 13 Lancers in early
1984 when I was attending young officers basic
armour course and Major Derek Joseph Tamgha I
Jurrat (TJ) was attending Senior Tactical Armour
Course , if I recollect clearly.
The TJ attached to his name inspired my great
interest , and I had the honour to have a short
conversation with him about his war action at Bara
Pind Jarpal.
I was surprised to find that our war hero was
Armenian origin , from Peshawar and an absolutely
down to earth unassuming man . He did not brag
about his war exploits.
I must add that I always had little faith in war
awards since I heard the story about an officer
Being tied to a charpoy (bed) by his ranker soldiers
so that he stays in the post under attack rather than
flee as he wanted ,in Kashmir being awarded an SJ
(Pakistani MC) later based on the citation he

received. This story I heard countless times as a
young military family boy from many relatives.
Dearest Brigadier Tariq Aslam and Major General
Aslam Zuberi (malik) also confirmed this story .
The final stamp was affixed when I interviewed
Major General Tajammul Hussain Malik in 2001 who
stated that 80 % of gallantry awards were bogus in
third world armies and Tajammul singled out
Pakistan’s highest award NH awarded in 1965 .
The consensus in Ranghars from the village where
my great grandfather was allotted land in 1898 was
that Derek Joseph deserved much more . They cited
various reasons including , being very young ,
having no influential relatives and possibly his
Christian faith.
Many years later in 2017 I interviewed 13 Lancers
“GENUINE WAR HERO” Brigadier K.M Nasir who
was ALL PRAISE for young Derek Joseph and below
is the message I received from him today early
morning :--

Extremely sorry to hear the very sad news of
Derek's Eternal Departure. He chose to remain a
bachelor n burden on none. Was Brig Asmat Beg's
Tp Ldr in B Sqn n so bold the 8 hits that I counted
on his tank in the Battle of Barapind on 16
December hadn't perturbed him at all, that
bravest officer among us all. En dir tk hits could b
seen on his Range Finder's side-end, baggage on
the Turret, a few clamps on the Hull Front and
worst of all an APDS that penetrated from the side
of driver, missing ammo loaded on idler wheel side
n escaped leaving behind a gaping hole. A
thoroughly committed professional soldier with an
ever smiling face, he was least demanding n fully
content. Derek u deserved a much higher gallantry
award than Tamgha e Jurrat. May the Almighty
reward u befittingly.
He was my chess playing partner during our field
service.
Derek Joseph u'll b missed forever n alwsys.
May the Lord of the Universe Bless u with the best
of His Heavenly Abodes. Amen.

I was disappointed to see LESSER OR SHALLOWER
PAKISTANI OBITUARY WRITERS REDUCING THE HITS
ON HIS TANK FROM 8 AS ACTUALLY COUNTER BY
DIRECT PARTICIPANT AND REDUCING THEM TO
FOUR ! A RATHER SNIDE STYLE OF WRITING AN
OBITUARY !
I MET THIS GREAT MAN ONLY ONCE IN 1984 APRIL-
MAY OR SO AND OUR MEETING LASTED LESS THAN
15 MINUTES !
HOWEVER THIS OBITUARY IS A TRIBUTE TO A
GREAT MAN AWARDED A PUNY TJ , ALTHOUGH HE
DESERVED MUCH MORE !
GOD BLESS THE GREAT SOUL OF LIEUTENANT
COLONEL DEREK JOSEPH THE ARMENIAN
CHRISTIAN WAR HERO OF A GREAT REGIMENT
THAT ONLY NON BRITISH ARMY OFFICERS OF THE
VERY PRIVATE BRITISH EAST INDIA COMPANYS
OFFICERS TRAINED AT ADDISCOMBE COULD HAVE
RAISED.
