1. Imagine Singapore's Sentosa Island was the target of a terrorist attack. Write an article from one of the following viewpoints: Members of the public.
I am a member of the public, and I am greatly saddened by the loss of life that resulted from the bombings on Sentosa Island.
As a popular tourist destination for both foreigners and Singaporeans alike, this attack has severely damaged the tourism industry, as well as damaged the world’s confidence in Singapore’s status as a strong anti-terrorism country. Singapore has been known to know great internal security, one of which is the Internal Security Act. It has also pre-empted several planned terrorist attacks and stopped them effectively, such as the attempted bombings on Changi Airport a few years ago. However, this attack has proven that even a country like Singapore can fall victim to terrorist attacks.
I feel confused that the Singaporean government did not foresee this attack, and this is a big lapse on the part of Singapore’s security forces. They should have been able to pick up any suspicious activity and move in to intercept the terrorists. I would like to know how the terrorists evaded the multiple layers of security checks, from the airports to the gantries at Sentosa Island. Could it be that the terrorists are now one step ahead of Singaporean authorities, and are able to hoodwink the security systems in Singapore? Could it be that we are outdated, out-informed and outmatched in our anti-terrorism efforts? Could it be that terrorists are now living all around us, preparing to launch another devastating attack?
I strongly urge the Singaporean government to start hunting down these heartless terrorists, and deal with them appropriately. They should also understand how these terrorists carried out their acts, and be more informed and thus armed with knowledge against these terrorists. They should also relay this information to other intelligence agencies, to better allow others to defend against these terrorists.
In all, I hope for the well-being of the victims of these attacks, as well as their family members. I also urge the Singaporean people to keep on having faith in their government, and to not turn against them. However, they should not be complacent, as terrorists will only be more encouraged to carry out more attacks. We should never let our guard down, and stand strong and together against terrorism.
