Jean Dubuffet- French painter who created the label, Art Brut, in 1945 to describe the
! ! art created outside the boundaries of official culture
Art Brut by Definition:
! -French meaning “raw art”
raw because the art was 'uncooked' or 'unadulterated' by
culture.
Raw because it is creation in its most direct and uninhibited form
! -Synonym for outsider art, but less broad;
! -art created outside the boundaries of official culture
-works produced by people who for various reasons have not been culturally
indoctrinated or socially conditioned.
Adolf Wolfti: First artists that associated himself with Art brut. He spent most of his life
in an insane asylum.
- Dr Morganthaler documented his patient Adolf Wolfli,while he produced
thousands of works from a small cell in his Swiss asylum
Jean Dubuffet found this documentary by Dr. Morganthaler particularlly interesting
so Together with other artists, including Andre Breton, formed the Compagnie
de l'Art Brut in 1948 where they collect “brut Art”
Dubuffet's collection was eventually granted a permanent home by the city of
Lausanne and the Collection de l'Art Brut is still there today
