3. Criterion A Assessment task for Year 9
This is a PRE & POST GAME STRATEGY AND OBSERVATION task
1. My name: Nung Class 9E____ My Opponent Christophe Meyer
2. Describe the strategy that you plan to use to defeat your opponent. Remember to justify your
choice of strategy. (Use many badminton terms appropriately).
Because he is quite a smaller player than me, I have height advantage. This means that first of
all, I would do a long serve because he would have trouble to get the shuttle cock at the back
of the court into the back of mine. Also, it would be on the right side of the court because he is
left handed. This would probably set the shuttle cock high. Then, I would either drive the
shuttle cock down and hard to the left side of the court, or fake drive and perform a net/drop
shot to the front of the left court. If he is able to return my shot, I would do an overhead clear
to the back of the right side of the court . This would make him run a lot so even if I lose on
that point, he would be tired.
3. Play the match
4. What was the outcome of the match? Score: 16-21 I WON LOST (circle one)
5. (a) Was your strategy successful? (b) Did you adjust your plan? Why or why not?
My plan was fairly successful. Although he was able to make me move a lot (which was tiring), the
plan also made him tired and beat him out. The only thing I would improve is to limit the points that
were lost through human error.
6. If you were going to play this opponent again what things would you like to try differently?
I would try to hit more to the right, forcing him to play on his weaker side. This would give me a higher
percentage of winning because the percentage of human error increases.
7. Assume that this would be a medal match at an upcoming competition. How might you train to
improve your chances against this opponent? What specific skills or tactics do you need, to improve
your game?
I would try to improve my agility. Because I am bigger and overweight than most people, I tend to
have problems moving. It is very easy for me to lose balance and to chance direction in a split second
may be too hard on me and my body. By working on agility, now my opponent cannot use that
weakness against me. Also, I would try to perfect my drop/net shots in order to finish each turn
successfully. Sometimes, I hit it a tad bit close to the line, giving my opponent a better chance of
hitting the shuttle cock.
