1. Abigail Breaux
Many things struck me as interesting
in Oedipus. I love that the whole poem is
ironic and mocking, in a way, towards
Oedipus. I found it funny that Oedipus was
making fun of the blind prophet, when in the
end Oedipus blinded himself; karma
definitely bit him in the butt. I also found it
very ironic, and this time mocking, that
Oedipus was being very “big and bad” about
what he was going to do to the murderer,
when actually he was talking about all the
things he was going to do to himself.
Although I found Oedipus as fun and
interesting, there were some things that I did
not like about the poem
I’m not a big fan of tragedies, so this
did not help Oedipus’s case. I do not like
how Oedipus begins and how I knew almost
immediately who killed the king. I find that
once you know who the killer is, the whole
poem is ruined. I would’ve liked a shocking
ending where no one, not even the reader
knew, that Oedipus is the killer. Oedipus
would be a better read if it was not a tragedy
and was written where no one knew Oedipus
was the murderer.
1. Do you agree that Oedipus would be
a better read if it was not a tragedy?
2. Who does Oedipus accuse of setting
him up?
