How does your media product represent particular social
1. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS?
2. The age / social group featured in our film is that of the
young teenage years.
We decided to go with this as it is the typical stereotype age
group and gender that gets killed in thriller/horror films.
FEATURED SOCIAL GROUPS
3. We portrayed the female character in a way that makes her
out to be troubled and deep in thought, as she stops to look
over the bridge, looking down at cars, perhaps contemplating
suicide. Due to us using the character of a female teenager,
we reinforced the stereotype that girls always get killed in
horrors (such as: Scream, Sorority Row, The Descent etc.). In
my opinion this does ruin the ‘build up’ as the audience will
be able to predict that she is going to die from watching other
films. From a feminist point of view, it could be argued that
our film also portrays women as weak and vulnerable however
it could also been seen that women are strong and unfearful
as she is walking on her own in the dark at night. As the girl is
a teenager we also thought it would be vital to have typical
teenage accessories such as a mobile phone and school bag.
REPRESENTATION OF GENDER
4. We also thought it would be important to be set in typical
teenagers bedroom which has PS3’S, a mirror, a video game
and hair products. We did this to really give the impression
and reinforce to the audience of the girls age and how young
she is. This will make her pending death even more shocking
and disturbing. However she is dressed in a relatively
forbidding manner as she is wearing a long black coat, this is
different to the typical teenage dress sense as it isn’t very
girly, yet it could foreshadow to the audience of her up coming
death.
