The student conducted an experiment to heat water using sunlight by painting one glass bottle black and leaving another clear. Over 6 hours, they measured the temperature of the water in each bottle every 2 hours. They found that the black bottle maintained a higher temperature than the clear bottle and the room temperature, absorbing more heat from the lamp standing in for sunlight. The experiment demonstrated that light energy can be converted to heat energy and the black surface absorbed more energy. The conclusion is that converting energy from one form to another, like light to heat, can help save the earth and lead to a greener future.
2. CONTENTS PURPOSE MATERIALS PROCEDURE PROCEDURE CONTINUE OBSERVATIONS OBSERVATIONS CONTINUE CONCLUSION BIG IDEA
3. PURPOSE The purpose of this project is to use ways to make the water hot instead of just adding hot water. This project is using the heat of the light to make the water hotter.
4. MATERIALS Paint brush 2 glass bottles Black paint Lamp (optional if the weather is dim) 2 teabags Thermometer Water
5. PROCEDURE The first step you have to do is to buy 2 glass bottles and use black paint to paint one of your glass bottle and leave the other one transparent Then you have to get 2 teabags and put one in each the glass bottles and add an equal amount of cold water in each bottle If the temperature is dim and no sun is coming up use a lamp (that’s what we did) Put it a place where the bottle can be shine and wait for 6 hours
6. PROCEDURE (continue) While you wait for 6 hours you have to use the thermometer to measure the temperature of the water each 2 hours and see which bottle heats up faster.
8. OBSERVATIONS (continue) Normally, the day is getting hotter towards noon, but today was foggy and rainy. So it got colder. The room temperature dropped 2ºC from 17ºC to 15ºC. I used a lamp next to the 2 bottles to replace the sunlight The tea in the clear bottle only dropped by 1ºC in the first 2 hours and stayed there (17.5ºC) until 4 hours later The tea in the black bottle maintained the same temperature of 18.5 degrees throughout
9. CONCLUSION The tea in the bottles absorbed the heat energy of the lamp so their temperature were higher than the room temperature The tea in the black bottle was hotter because the black color bottle absorbed more energy Energy can be converted from light to heat
10. BIG IDEA Energy can be converted e.g. Light can be absorbed by solar panels and change it into electricity, wind energy also can be converted into electricity If everybody use more of energy conversion, we can save the earth and get a greener tomorrow
