5 Unwritten Rules
of an Employee Referral
Program : Employees
5 Unwritten Rules
ofan Employee ReferralProgram:Employees
Talent being such a key driver in most organizations, the responsibility to get
talent cannot be taken lightly at any time. This is why most employee referral
programs are governed by rules that define the key responsibilities of an
employee while referring someone.
Apart from the rules that are written down in broad ink, there is an unwritten
code of conduct as well that defines which employee actions are considered
appropriate or inappropriate while participating in referral programs.
INTRODUCTION
5 Unwritten Rules

Find below a list of key unwritten rules of an employee referral
program for employees:
5 Unwritten Rules
ofan Employee ReferralProgram:Employees
Employees have a responsibility to read the job description fully and completely
to ensure they have a good understanding of the skills and competencies
required for a particular role.
Understand the job requirement thoroughly
Think twice before making a referral
Employees are obliged to only refer candidates they know either on a first hand
basis or through a mutual associate. Referring someone about whom they know
absolutely nothing is considered irresponsible behavior as organizations give
preference to referred candidates only because they come from a source trusted
by them.
5 Unwritten Rules
ofan Employee ReferralProgram:Employees
It is the responsibility of employees to do a first level screening of candidates
capabilities with the skills required to ensure there is a good likelihood of the
candidate being able to perform the required role. Referring someone whose skills
are completely incompatible with the requirement only leads to wastage of time
and effort on the part of recruiters and hiring managers.
Ensure that the referral fits the requirement
Paint the real picture
Employees have a responsibility to represent the organization in the correct light
to potential candidates. This means telling things as they are, without any
commitments or promises for which they have not received prior approval or
sanction.
5 Unwritten Rules
ofan Employee ReferralProgram:Employees
Employees are expected to follow the required protocolwhile referring
someone and not try and push or lobby for their referral to be hired. They
should let the due process be followed and allow for the best candidate to be
selected in the larger interest of the organization.
Also employees are expected to allow for a reasonable time frame to lapse
before expecting feedback on their candidates.Since recruiters need to deal
with a lot of open positions and referrals from multiple employees, a 24-48
hour time frame is required for them to provide the desired feedback.
Be patient during the entire process
5 Unwritten Rules
ofan Employee ReferralProgram:Employees
These unwritten rules exist in almost every organization and it makes
good sense for employees to practice them to ensure they do not fall
on the wrong side of the organization.
